Bowlers help Scotland to 35-run win

A disciplined bowling performance from Scotland helped them to a 35-run win over Kenya in Aberdeen

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jul-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA disciplined bowling performance from Scotland helped them defend a middling score of 114 as they bowled out Kenya for 78 in the first T20 of the two-match series in Aberdeen. Scotland won the toss and elected to bat, with the openers putting on 40 for the first wicket. But Kenya fought back with a clump of wickets, two of them in the same over – 14th, bowled by Tanmay Mishra – reducing Scotland to 69 for 5 in the 15th.Preston Mommsen, the Scotland captain, and Moneeb Iqbal briefly resisted with a sixth-wicket partnership of 35. Scotland eventually reached 113 for 6 in their 20 overs, with Mishra returning with his best T20 figures of 3 for 25.Kenya started inauspiciously, losing a flurry of wickets to be reduced to 29 for 5 in the ninth over. Every one of Scotland’s bowlers picked up a wicket as only three Kenyan batsman were able to register double-digit scores. Kenya’s innings was wrapped up off the penultimate delivery of the 19th over to give Scotland a convincing 35-run win. Gordon Goudie was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 22.

Pietersen avoided surgery to play Ashes

Kevin Pietersen has claimed that he almost missed the back-to-back Ashes series due to the knee injury he sustained in New Zealand

Kevin Pietersen has claimed that he almost missed England’s back-to-back Ashes series due to the knee injury he sustained in New Zealand.Pietersen bruised his right knee during fielding practice in New Zealand in the middle of March and, after being forced out of the tour, missed the return series in England, the entire IPL season and the Champions Trophy. He returned, for Surrey, on June 21.Now Pietersen has suggested he considered surgery to combat the injury and that, despite having recovered enough to play, he still suffers pain in the knee and will be obliged to continue rehabilitation on it for the rest of his career.”If I’d had surgery I’d have been out for nine months,” Pietersen said. “It was a big decision. My knee was a shambles. I could have had surgery but the Ashes means too much.”Everyone wants to play in the Ashes. Everyone who has ever played cricket wants to play in the Ashes. It’s the big stage.”I like to perform on the big stage when the team need me. I like to stand up and be counted. As an English or Australian player your career is defined in how you play in Ashes cricket.”I think I’ll be in rehab for the rest of my career with my knee. I still get pain sometimes. I have sore calves; I have sore hamstrings. I’m an old man. But I should be OK if I keep being as professional [with rehab] as I have been over the last three-and-a-half-months.”Pietersen’s comments are something of a surprise. It had been understood that the bruising of his knee, an impact rather than a wear-and-tear injury, had been fully resolved and that it had been decided some time ago that rest was a perfectly adequate solution. But Pietersen’s words suggest the injury may have been worse than previously believed and raise some questions about his long-term future in the game.Pietersen recorded his 23rd Test century during the day – only Alastair Cook, who has 25, has scored more for England – and sustained England’s hopes of salvaging a draw from the game. He also overtook Graham Gooch in the course of the innings to become the highest run-scorer in all formats of international cricket for England. He was unfortunate to be given out, too. While there is little doubt that the delivery from Mitchell Starc that trapped him leg before pitched in line and would have hit the stumps, Pietersen’s review should have seen the TV umpire, Kumar Dharmasena, overturn the on-field decision. There was a suggestion of Hot Spot on Pietersen’s bat and audio evidence to suggest an edge.It left England, by stumps, requiring 34 more runs to avoid the follow-on with only three wickets in hand. But while Pietersen admitted England still had some hard work ahead, he was determined not to moan about the decision and insisted they could still win the game.”It’s all part of the cycle of life,” a phlegmatic Pietersen said. “Some days things are good for you and some days they are not. You just have to accept that.”I don’t like to upset a dressing room by throwing and kicking things as other people have to bat and it doesn’t help them.”We’re still in a spot of bother in the game, but if we can avoid the follow-on anything can happen still. We wanted to keep their fast bowlers in the field all day – we made them work hard – but we can draw or even win this game still. If our engine room apply themselves tomorrow and we get close to their total there is no reason why we can’t.”

BCCI under scrutiny for alleged foreign exchange violations

There is bad news in store for the BCCI: it has been issued 14 notices, carrying a total penalty of Rs 1546 crore (approx US$291m) for violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act

Sometime over the next couple of days an appellate tribunal is set to hear the BCCI’s appeal against a Rs 52.24 crore ($10m) fine levied in February by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for irregularities in the grant of IPL franchise rights, media rights and sponsorship rights. That fine was part of a series of financial penalties imposed by the federal government as part of a multi-department focus on the BCCI and its allied businesses; it included a Rs 2300 crore (US$433m) income tax bill covering a three-year period and a Rs 100 crore ($18.77m) penalty demanded of Rajasthan Royals. However, investigations by ESPNcricinfo reveal that there is more bad news in store for the BCCI: it has been issued 14 notices similar to that received by Rajasthan Royals, carrying a total penalty of Rs 1546 crore (approx US$291m) for violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). All the notices have been issued by the Indian Enforcement Directorate (ED).The matter is currently the subject of “quasi-judicial adjudication proceedings”, which are in progress before the Special Director of Enforcement, Mumbai. Because of those proceedings the BCCI – unlike Rajasthan Royals – is yet to be issued an ED order demanding payment.Despite the presence of several politicians in the BCCI, the board has a very prickly relationship with the Indian government. While it does have time on its side, given India’s lengthy judicial process, the fact that there are now legal proceedings underway in a plethora of cases accusing the BCCI of financial violations indicates that the chances of it coming away unscathed in all of them appear extremely unlikely. In 2011, after two years of investigations, the ED issued 20 notices relating to various transgressions by the IPL – 14 to the BCCI, and the rest to Rajasthan Royals and officials of the State Bank of Travancore’s Jaipur Branch. The officials mentioned in the show cause notices – detailed in a memorandum, a copy of which is with ESPNcricinfo – include current BCCI president N Srinivasan, his predecessor Shashank Manohar, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, former BCCI treasurer MP Pandove, its general manager Ratnakar Shetty, the IPL’s chief operating officer Sundar Raman, and Prasanna Kannan, who has been identified as “manager BCCI”.The 14 notices pertain to the IPL’s 2009 season, when the tournament was moved to South Africa. The league was then run by Modi and the IPL’s governing council had little control over his actions as a “chairman”. Most notices pertain to Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the FEMA law, covering foreign exchange transactions both within and outside of the country. The most significant of these relate to remittances made by and to the BCCI during IPL 2009: two each for Rs 243 crore (US$49m) and Rs 203 crore (US$38m) have been issued for contraventions of the FEMA law. The contraventions in these four cases pertain to receiving payment from outside India and holding foreign exchange outside India beyond the provisions of FEMA.According to Harish Pandey, a senior lawyer specialising in FEMA law in the Supreme Court of India, quasi-judicial adjudication marked a “crucial and serious stage for the BCCI, as it has to state everything in its defence here”.According to lawyers familiar in their dealings with FEMA cases, it should take around two years for a quasi-judicial hearing to reach a decision. These hearings are the first of four stages of legal proceedings relating to being served an ED notice, which could go all the way to the Supreme Court. Once the ED issues its order demanding payment, the defendant has 45 days to appeal to a Special Director (Appeals) and from there to an Appellate Tribunal. An unfavourable decision there means the defendant can move the High Court and finally the Supreme Court.A BCCI insider, on the condition of anonymity, said the issue will run its due course: “It could take years and years for the case to close. Right now, the ED is investigating it. If they have enough evidence, it will move to court. And then, you never know how long will it take for the legal proceedings.”A finance ministry official said the various levels of appeal ensured justice: “At four appellate stages you can’t not find justice. If you are innocent, there are checks and balances to see that justice is done. If you are guilty, you will be caught. Ultimately, redressal is available if your case is strong.”

India had confirmed their tour following a BCCI working committee meeting earlier this month. The trip had earlier been put on hold, with the board citing the ‘fatigue factor.’ It is uncertain at this stage if the selectors will stick to a full-strength squad. When India last went to Zimbabwe, in 2010, Suresh Raina captained a young side, and didn’t make it to the final of the one-day tri-series.

Wagner's inner dog shows its teeth in victory

Neil Wagner provided compelling evidence for his inclusion in New Zealand’s Test team by bowling them to victory on the final day of their opening tour match against Derbyshire.

Neil Wagner provided compelling evidence for his inclusion in New Zealand’s Test team by bowling them to victory on the final day of their opening tour match against Derbyshire.Despite losing his right big toenail during the day, Wagner claimed the 13th five-wicket haul of his first-class career as New Zealand vindicated their decision to declare overnight by wrapping up a 107-run victory shortly after tea.Bowling coaches often talk of the need for their charges to harness their “inner dog” and in Wagner New Zealand have their own version of the Hound of the Baskervilles. While not express pace, Wagner bowls an excellent length with sustained hostility that few batsmen can enjoy. With his slightly round-arm action taking the ball away from the right-hander and his ability to swing the ball back into them, he demands a stroke more often than most and has a never-say-die attitude that might border on the barking mad but, New Zealand coach, Mike Hesson, later agreed was “a captain’s dream”.”Even when it’s flat he wants the ball,” Hesson said. “He just keeps charging in. He’s a guy that can bowl long spells, so he allows us to rotate the other bowlers and he is good at bowling with the old ball. We got some good reverse swing here.”There is something of the pantomime villain about Wagner. While quietly spoken and modest off the pitch, he bristles with aggression on it in the manner of Andre Nel or Steve Kirby. Here, scooping to field a defensive prod from Billy Godleman off his own bowling, he noted the batsman standing outside his crease and attempted to throw the stumps down. Instead he hit Godleman’s gloves and knocked the bat out of his hands. Umpire Nigel Cowley seemed unhappy with the incident and called the New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, over for a chat. But Godleman was out of his ground at the time and, had the ball hit the stumps, might well have been run out.”I must be the most hated guy in cricket,” Wagner, who admits to being a victim of ‘white line fever,’ said afterwards. “Even my mates hate me when I play cricket. But I take a lot of passion and pride in playing for my country and I’m very aware that every ball I bowl is representing New Zealand.”Once I step-off the pitch, I’m fine. I’ll have a beer and a chat with anyone and I leave it all out there. But I like to create little battles to keep myself going and stop myself from getting lazy.”Certainly New Zealand were grateful for his contribution here. Having given Derbyshire the whole final day to score 335 to win, New Zealand had seen off the new ball bowlers without too much trouble when Wagner was introduced into the attack. Chesney Hughes, unsure whether to play or leave, ending up doing a bit of both and a lot of neither and was caught behind prodding half forward, before Godleman was leg before to a full delivery that skidded on with the arm. Later he returned to have Richard Johnson caught behind as he flashed outside off stump – Wagner’s 300th first-class wicket – before Dan Redfern and Peter Burgoyne were punished for indeterminate prods at balls on or around off stump.Whether it was enough to earn Wagner a place in the New Zealand line-up for the first Test remains to be seen. With Trent Boult, another left-arm seamer, all but certain to play, New Zealand may be reluctant to contribute a plethora of foot marks for Graeme Swann to bowl into.Doug Bracewell also produced a reminder of his own qualities later in the day. While his first spell lacked bite, Bracewell’s latter spells rediscovered the pace he found in the first innings. Impressively strong, Bracewell looked too hot for some of the Derbyshire batsmen to handle and benefitted from two loose strokes outside off stump. He does not gain the swing of some of his colleagues – New Zealand have been practising with the Dukes ball for a month before arriving in the UK and look completely comfortable with it – but gains movement off the seam and has a little extra ability with the bat than Wagner. With Hesson later hinting that New Zealand would be loathe to go into the Lord’s Test without a specialist spinner – “it’s quite nice to have someone with a change of pace,” he said – it still appears Wagner and Bracewell are fighting for one place in the side. Boult and Tim Southee, who looks in peak form in practice, will both play at Grace Road this week.”Everyone is always in a bowl out,” Wagner said. “It’s a great spot for the team to be in. Bracewell is a class bowler at international level as his record shows.”But this was not a perfect game for New Zealand. The top order of Peter Fulton, Hamish Rutherford and Martin Guptill struggled for runs in either innings and Mark Gillespie, despite swinging the ball more than any of his colleagues, failed to take a wicket in 29 overs in the match and confirmed himself as fifth seamer in the tour party.Yet New Zealand won without ever making victory their aim and gained useful exposure to the conditions without ever allowing personal milestones to obscure their objectives. By declaring both innings, they tested their bowlers under pressure and, while neither went on to make major scores, both Williamson and BJ Watling looked in fine form. New Zealand will play their first choice batting line-up in Leicester in the hope that the top-order can find form before the Tests. There were some positives for Derbyshire, too. While their captain, Wayne Madsen, admitted he was “looking for more from the batsmen” he could be encouraged by the performance of Mark Footitt, who claimed 6 for 48 in the match – all of them top-order international batsmen – and Alasadair Evans, who showed enough to suggest he is a seamer with what it takes to enjoy a career at first-class level. Both showed they could be considered viable replacements for the injured pair of Mark Turner, who has a quad injury, and Tony Palladino, who has a side strain.Dan Redfern, with a run-a-ball half-century, also impressed on the final day. Demonstrating some unusual flair off the legs and a couple of rasping extra-cover drives, he thumped six fours in nine balls at one stage, including five in eight balls from Gillespie. The setbacks Derbyshire have suffered this season have eroded their confidence. But they are better than they have shown so far and, if the likes of Whiteley and Godleman – richly talented but lacking in belief at present – can recover their form, Derbyshire may yet surprise a few teams in Division One.
