Nervous Copeland enters the unknown

Trent Copeland is sustained by the strong belief that his methodical bowling can extract wickets on all surfaces

Trent Copeland marked his departure for Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka by admitting to nervousness. But he believes his methodical bowling can extract wickets on all surfaces, even the unforgiving pitches Australia are likely to encounter in Galle, Kandy and Colombo.Phil Hughes, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Usman Khawaja, Michael Beer, Nathan Lyon and Copeland all departed for Sri Lanka on Tuesday, the final pieces of an Australian squad that has been patch-worked together via the tour’s segues from Twenty20 and limited-overs to Test matches. At 25, Copeland is a mature character, having crafted his medium pace in Sydney grade cricket then pursued it with great success in the Sheffield Shield for NSW. On the face of it Copeland might be expected to play a more prominent role on the tour of South Africa that follows Sri Lanka, but he cited Glenn McGrath as an example of how the simplest methods can have universal value.”I don’t think I can ever compare myself to the great man [McGrath], but I think patience, line and length and just trying to do a little bit with the ball and just continually asking questions of the batsmen is my theory,” Copeland said. “I suppose in that regard it is similar to what he did, but I’ve just got to do what’s been successful for me at state level and hopefully that can work.”Just believe in your skills; it doesn’t matter whether you’re in flat, hot conditions or green seaming conditions down in Hobart, if you put the ball in the right area often enough it is really my game plan, and that’ll be successful no matter what the conditions. Other than that it’s just about backing myself and being able to accept that sometimes batsmen play good shots.”If I bowl the ball and put it where I want to put it and they can still hit me, then good luck to them and I need to re-assess. But if I can be 100%confident in doing that then that’s all I can do.”Chosen for Sri Lanka after showing poise and parsimony on unresponsive pitches in Zimbabwe, Copeland will be behind the likes of Harris, Siddle and Mitchell Johnson for a pace bowling spot. He can reasonably expect an opportunity however, given the attritional nature of back-to-back Test matches – a factor that precluded Doug Bollinger’s inclusion.”Obviously it is a great opportunity for me to be involved, I’m very nervous getting to the airport and going on my first tour,” Copeland said. “I need to get comfortable with the surroundings and hopefully make an impression once I arrive there. That’s all I can do.”[Playing] is something I can’t really control, if given the opportunity I think I’m ready to go and I’ll do my best to prepare well once I get over there. The Australian cricket side has been so successful for so long and hopefully that continues. If I can add to that, well great, but if not, then I’ll bide my time and wait until the time comes.”One happy circumstance for both Copeland and Khawaja has been the employment of Chandika Hathurusingha, the former Sri Lanka opening batsman and occasional seam bowler, as the NSW assistant coach. His knowledge of home conditions has been a valuable source of advice for both men in the weeks leading up to their departure.”[Hathurusingha’s appointment] has been perfect timing for me, because I’ve had a chance to chew his ear off about the conditions over there and hopefully learn a lot once I’m there,” Copeland said. “Watching the one dayers and the T20s in Colombo and places like that, the conditions are obviously going to be hot, humid, the ball might swing around a little bit, and other than that I’m just prepared to take it as it comes.”I’ve been in Zimbabwe for the last month on the Australia A tour over there; similar conditions, flat and slow wickets, hot conditions, training outdoors in the heat and stuff like that, so I think if there has been a good preparation anywhere I think that’s probably the one, so I think that’s held me in good stead.”Copeland’s lack of a Cricket Australia or BBL contract means he is flying to Sri Lanka as a man of significantly more modest means than many team-mates, but he reiterated his desire to move beyond that pigeonhole.”The game is evolving and T20 cricket’s playing a large part in the marketing of cricket and keeping younger people involved and interested in watching it,” he said. “This is a great opportunity and I’m absolutely thrilled about it, but I think I can make strides in the other forms of the game as well – I’d hate to think that I’ll only ever play one form of the game.”I’m up for the challenge and if its Test cricket or T20 it doesn’t matter, I’m training hard and hopefully I can play all three.”

– O time esteve concentrado do começo ao fim.

We must rotate strike better – Sammy

Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, has urged his batsmen to post “bigger, match-winning totals” and singled out the rotation of strike as an area his team needs to improve upon

Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, has urged his batsmen to post “bigger, match-winning totals” and singled out the rotation of strike as an area his team needs to improve upon in the fourth ODI against Pakistan in Barbados. The visitors have already taken the series 3-0 but Sammy is hoping to “pull one back” at the Kensington Oval.”Rotating the strike is one area we have to get better at,” Sammy said. “If we rotate the strike, that upsets the rhythm of the Pakistan bowlers and that would lead to us posting bigger, match-winning totals.”The ‘dot ball’ percentage has been high and we need to combat the opposition bowlers. One of our major problems has been that we have not been putting enough runs on the board. As a batting unit we hit a lot of boundaries, but we have to get better at ticking over the strike, especially against the Pakistan spinners.”The West Indian batsmen failed to post competitive totals in all three games so far, struggling to score against offspinners Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal in particular. In the first two matches in St Lucia, they were restricted to 221 for 6 and dismissed for 220. They had reached a sound position of 92 for 1 in the 21st over in the third at Bridgetown before they collapsed for 171 all out.The bowlers also managed to take only five Pakistan wickets in the first two matches, but came close to winning the third, in which they took seven. Pakistan were 49 for 4 at one stage before Misbah-ul-Haq steered them to a series-clinching victory.”I can’t fault the bowlers,” Sammy said. “They have been superb for us and brought us close to a victory in the last match. I believe if we put the runs on the board, the bowlers will do the job for us. We are looking to create winning opportunities and when we do that we have to grab it with both hands.”West Indies brought back Ramnaresh Sarwan to the squad after he had been left out for the first three games. Sarwan’s previous appearance was the quarter-final defeat against Pakistan in the World Cup. “We know he is a good player,” Sammy said. “With him back it is a plus for the team and we wish him all the best. He will be a key player in those middle overs as we look to keep the strike ticking.”

-Flamengo x Ponte Preta – Copa do Brasil

13 de maio
-Chapecoense x Flamengo – Brasileirão

16 de maio
-Flamengo x Emelec – Copa Libertadores

Veja a lista:

23 de maio
– River Plate x Flamengo – Copa Libertadores

Confira as partidas:

Ireland to let their cricket do the talking

The top Associate nation doesn’t want to contribute verbally to the current debate; they want to give the ICC reasons to include them through their performances on the field

Sidharth Monga in Dhaka21-Feb-2011

Niall O’Brien wants Ireland’s cricketing performances to make a case for inclusion in future World Cups•Associated Press

With opinion divided world over on the Associates’ participation in future World Cups, with opinions ranging from that of Ricky Ponting’s to Graeme Swann’s, the one voice that should matter the most, that of Ireland, is typical of how the team plays its cricket. Four years ago, they not only won two big matches and tied one, they also won the hearts of the cricket followers all over the world. Despite continuing the good work, they are still waiting for the elusive Test status perhaps after the Bangladesh misadventure, the ICC is cautious inviting teams into the Test family. The top Associate nation, though, doesn’t want to contribute verbally to the current debate; they want to give the ICC reasons to include them through their performances on the field.Niall O’Brien, Ireland’s wicketkeeper-batsman, knows the uninspiring show by Canada and Kenya on Sunday provides the ICC, and more importantly its commercial partners, reasons to keep the number of non-Test-playing nations in the tournament down. “It’s obviously two disappointing results from Canada and Kenya,” he said. “I am disappointed with how they played, but from my point of view, we pride ourselves in being the top of the so-called Associates and the so-called minnows. So from my point of view, we have got a good enough team to go a long way in this tournament. Yes it is disappointing the way they played, but they have five games to rectify that. Hopefully they put in strong performances in the next three or four weeks.”O’Brien didn’t harp too much on the decision to prune the next World Cup down to 10 teams. “Yes, it is a shame, because the game has got to grow,” he said. “[However], it’s up to the ICC to decide who is going to be a part of the next World Cup. Hopefully we will be a part of that. In the next six weeks, if we can put in strong performances, and win matches, against teams we so-called ‘shouldn’t beat’, as we have done in the past, we only strengthen our case. From our point of view, we are not thinking too much about it. It’s for ICC to think, it’s out of our hands.”Bangladesh, being a Test nation, are one team they so-called ‘shouldn’t beat’, but they have done so at the world events of both the formats they are qualified to play in – and at 74 runs and six wickets, the margins are quite comprehensive too. This game, crucial as it is for both teams’ ambitions to progress to the next round, will be a different kettle. The conditions here will be the most foreign to Ireland, despite all their training against spin in their one-month camp in Pune last year. When they toured here last, Ireland failed to win a game in the three-ODI series.”That was a long time ago, and that schedule, that tour, was a bit hard on us,” O’Brien said. “We only turned up on a Monday, and played 36 hours later in some pretty difficult conditions. That’s a long time ago, that’s past, and we have beaten Bangladesh three of the last four times we have played them. Confidence is high, and we know we have got a good enough team to win here Friday night.”Bangladesh spinners, the likes of [Abdur] Razzak and skipper [Shakib Al Hasan], we have to play them with the respect they deserve, but at the same time we have to be proactive and quite aggressive.”Ireland know a good performance in subcontinent conditions will be a natural progression from four years ago. As long as they can do that, O’Brien feels, the rest will fall in place. “We have got the next four to five weeks to concentrate on our cricket, and 2015 in a long way away. We have got a World Cup here, we have got the T20 world cup in Sri Lanka in not too distant future. We have got plenty of cricket to look forward to. We played Australia in August in Dublin, and should have beaten them. We have got England in August this year, so hopefully we go out there and put in good performances, and let the rest look after themselves.”So 2011 it is, and O’Brien and his side are looking forward to playing in front of full houses, as opposed to in front of four people and their dog back home. On the way if they spoil a few parties, that may or may not include Bangladesh’s, then so be it.
