Following the Ijaz Butt’s outburst on Sunday afternoon where he accused England of taking money to lose the third one-day international against Pakistan, the ECB released a statement as did Andrew Strauss
20-Sep-2010The ECB and the England team today announced that they were committed to continuing with the current NatWest Series against Pakistan. This decision was unanimously taken by the ECB Board following a meeting between the ECB chairman Giles Clarke, CEO David Collier, ECB managing director – England Cricket, Hugh Morris, and the England captain and coach, Andrew Strauss and Andrew Flower and a subsequent meeting with all of the England team. The ECB and the England players completely reject the remarks made by the PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt yesterday about the England team’s conduct in the 3rd NatWest ODI at The Brit Insurance Oval. Mr Butt’s comments were wholly irresponsible and completely without foundation. The ECB expresses its gratitude for the outstanding conduct of the England team this summer and will take all legal and disciplinary action which may result from Mr Butt’s comments. The Board and the team, however, are of a view that it remains in the best interests of world cricket , the players and in particular of cricket supporters that the tour should continue and it would set a dangerous precedent to call off a tour based on the misguided and inaccurate remarks made by one individual.ECB will continue to offer ICC its full support in taking the strongest possible action against all areas of corruption and is pledged to offering the ACSU its full support at all times.Given the current sensitivities surrounding this issue, ECB believes it is imperative that any serious allegations made against another team or player should be presented through the proper channels to the ACSU. Both ECB and Team England view the comments made by Mr Butt as defamatory and not based in fact.Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and the Olympics, said: “I welcome the decision by England to play the last two games of this tour. It is a pragmatic decision that is in the best interests of world cricket.”Media Statement issued on behalf of the England Cricket TeamThe England Cricket team has this morning issued a statement in conjunction with the Professional Cricketers Association (PCA), following allegations made yesterday by the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. The team deplores and rejects unreservedly the suggestion that any England cricketer was involved in manipulating the outcome, or any individual element, of the 3rd NatWest Series ODI at the Brit Insurance Oval between England and Pakistan last week. The players fully understand their responsibilities as representatives of their country, and would not countenance giving less than 100% in any match they play.Andrew Strauss, England captain, speaking on behalf of the team, said:”We would like to express our surprise, dismay and outrage at the comments made by Mr Butt yesterday. We are deeply concerned and disappointed that our integrity as cricketers has been brought into question. We refute these allegations completely and will be working closely with the ECB to explore all legal options open to us.”Under the circumstances, we have strong misgivings about continuing to play the last two games of the current series and urge the Pakistani team and management to distance themselves from Mr Butt’s allegations. We do, however, recognise our responsibilities to the game of cricket, and in particular to the cricket-loving public in this country, and will therefore endeavour to fulfil these fixtures to the best of our ability.”Angus Porter, chief executive of the PCA, added:”The players appreciate the difficult position the ECB finds itself in, and is fully supportive of the actions taken by the Board, along with the ICC, to ensure all allegations of wrong-doing are properly investigated and acted upon. We will continue to cooperate closely with the ECB, with the aim of ensuring that the work to root out corruption is not derailed by mischievous attempts to detract attention from the real issues.”
The BCCI has approved the Indian team management’s request to send a group of Test players early to South Africa to get “acclimatised” to the conditions

The BCCI has approved the Indian team management’s request to send a group of Test players early to South Africa to get “acclimatised” to the conditions and make up for the absence of practice games before the three-Test series that begins on December 16. It is not yet clear who the concerned players are and how many will be part of the group which is expected to depart immediately after the third Test against New Zealand on November 24. India and New Zealand play a five-match ODI series that concludes on December 10, six days prior to the first Test in Centurion.Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, confirmed the development, stating the request had come from coach Gary Kirsten. “The plan now is to send some of the Test players early. The team management and the coach expressed the desire that there is a need for acclimatisation in South Africa,” Shetty said. In his discussions with the board, Kirsten had emphasised the importance of early preparation and had pointed out India’s 1-2 series defeat on their last trip to South Africa in 2006-07. Back then, India were ranked No. 4 on the Test ladder. However, this time, India go into the series at No.1, a ranking they’ve held on to since beating Sri Lanka in December 2009.The board’s nod is a small victory for Kirsten, who has been busy putting a structure in place as part of his plans for the future. It is understood that as early as February this year Kirsten asked the BCCI to consider rescheduling the home series against New Zealand. He wanted to cull the three-Test series to two. This would have served the dual purpose of giving rest to the core group of seven to eight players and providing them ample time to recover to get an early feel of South African conditions. But the board’s response was not favourable at first. However, immediately after the Sri Lanka series in August this year, Kirsten was informed that a few Test players could leave for South Africa early. Kirsten then sent an email – a copy of which is available with ESPNcricinfo – to this team management. “There is no change to NZ schedule and we will play last ODI on the 10th Dec,” the e-mail read. “It has however been agreed to get as many Test players as possible to South Africa early and we will rotate players during ODI series against NZ.”For the ongoing ODI series against Australia, at least five first-choice players were rested in order to keep them fresh for the Test series. Shetty mentioned that the same exercise would be repeated in the five-match ODI series against New Zealand. He said his was part of the drill to keep the Indian team in the perfect shape for the World Cup.”The process has started already. Except MS Dhoni, no senior player is there in the present ODI team (for the Australia series). Despite that our team performed really well yesterday. I hope this will work because this is one way the team management is working out a plan towards the World Cup,” Shetty said. At the same time, he said, it was an opportunity for youngsters to excel and make a point in the lead-up to the World Cup.Dhoni had recently echoed these sentiments. India play 12 more ODIs before the World Cup, hosted jointly by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, gets underway in February next year, and Dhoni wanted to make sure his first-choice players aren’t hampered by fatigue or injury. “In last few series, we have not played with our strongest side and rested most players. Maybe injuries were a bit more concern, we are a bit cautious,” said Dhoni. “We don’t want our big players to get injured before a tournament especially when it’s happening in India. Hopeful everyone will get fit for World Cup.”
A round-up of Saturday’s matches in the WICB one-day tournament
ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2010Windward Islands edged to a three-wicket victory against Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Trelawny Stadium despite a middle-order collapse that threatened to undermine a solid opening partnership. The win secured Windward a spot in the semi-finals of the WICB Cup.The Windward openers, Devon Smith and Johnson Charles, added 105 for the first wicket, chasing a target of 203, but the innings lost direction after the stand was broken. CCC’s Gilford Moore, who finished with 4 for 41, was instrumental in Windward losing seven wickets for 91 runs. Windward, however, had enough resources to complete victory in the 48th over.Unlike Windward, CCC wobbled at the start of their innings, losing their first five wickets for 85 runs. It needed a half-century from Ryan Wiggins, and useful 30s from Romel Currency and Chadwick Walton, to prop the side up to 202 for 9. Darren Sammy was Windward’s best bowler with figures of 3 for 34.The match between Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago at Sabina Park had to be abandoned shortly into the second innings because of rain. T&T batted first after winning the toss and were dismissed for 225 in the 50th over. Several batsmen got starts but Dwayne Bravo and Denesh Ramdin top-scored with 43 each. Krishmar Santokie and David Bernard were the top wicket-takers for Jamaica, with three strikes apiece.Jamaica lost Xavier Marshall and Chris Gayle during the chase and had reached 45 for 2 after 10.4 overs before the game was called off. Both teams took two points each from the game, leaving Jamaica on two and T&T on six. Jamaica will have to beat CCC comprehensively on Sunday to reach the final four.

Jamie How, the Central Districts Stags captain, has said the Champions League Twenty20 is an opportunity for the youngsters in his side to stake claims for higher honours.”It gives them the chance to show what they’re made of on the international scene and perhaps if they perform well, they might even have a chance of being picked up for one of the IPL teams,” How said ahead of the tournament that gets underway on September 10. “Both individually and as a team, we have a chance to pit our skills against the world’s best, which is a very exciting prospect.”Central Districts qualified for the event by winning the 2009/10 edition of New Zealand’s domestic HRV Cup. How was wary of the competition his side will encounter in the Champions League which features the top domestic Twenty20 sides from around the world. “Every team here is here on merit. The fact that they’re here means that they are very good teams, winning or finishing near the top of their individual competitions. Each of the teams has its strengths and weaknesses and we just have to be able to deal with those.”The team will miss the services of two of their key players – Ross Taylor, who will turn out for his IPL side Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Jacob Oram who is out with a knee injury. How admitted his side would be hampered by their, and the injured allrounder Graham Napier’s, absence. “Ross is certainly a big loss for us. He’s one of our best players, and along with missing Jacob Oram and Graham, it’s been a big loss, but it also gives someone else an opportunity to step into their big shoes.”How looked forward to the event and felt the youngsters in his side would enjoy playing in South Africa. “It’s a wonderful experience for the younger guys who haven’t been here, because it’s a great country to tour. There are really great cricket facilities and exciting places off the field. And we’re doing quite a bit of travelling – we play in Centurion, Durban and Port Elizabeth – so we’ll see quite a bit of the country.”

Pundit Alan Hutton believes that Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt could miss up to eight weeks of action should his injury scare prove to be a thigh problem, as per Football Insider.
The Lowdown: Elland Road withdrawal
Gelhardt was handed a start for the under-23s on Monday, looking to build up his fitness levels after missing parts of the international break with a fake positive virus test.
[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]
Unfortunately, the 19-year-old was forced off at Elland Road against Crystal Palace with an issue with his left leg as Crysencio Summerville stole the show with a hat-trick in a 4-0 win.
Leeds were set to assess Gelhardt on Tuesday but initially believed it was a dead leg, although Hutton has made a worrying claim.
The Latest: Hutton’s comments on Gelhardt
Hutton, who contributes as a pundit for the BBC, described Leeds’ injury woes this season to Football Insider as a ‘nightmare’.
He added that a thigh problem could rule Gelhardt out for ‘six to eight weeks’, which could keep him out of the Whites’ final seven league games, should that be the case.
The ex-Scotland defender lamented:
“I just think in general, the injury situation at Leeds has been a nightmare.
“When you really think about it, every week we’re talking about somebody being out.
“Let’s just hope that it is a dead leg because if you’re talking a thigh injury, he could be out for six to eight weeks. Fingers crossed it’s not.
“Playing against teams like Watford and teams round about you, they are six-pointers. You need your full squad fit and raring to go.
“That’s whether it be starting XI or off the bench to make an impact, like Gelhardt has done this season. Hopefully, it’s not too serious.”
The Verdict: Gelhardt’s rise
It’s crazy to think that Leeds would be sweating this much on an injury to Gelhardt, but that just shows his improvement in 2021/22, along with highlighting the severity of the club’s injury crisis.
He has contributed to five Premier League goals in just 486 minutes of action, helping the Whites to pick up four points by winning a penalty against Wolves in October and netting a last-gasp winner against Norwich last month.
Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts are both sidelined through injury, which makes Gelhardt’s availability even more important at this stage of the season. Hopefully the youngster will be able to make the trip to Watford on Saturday, providing strong competition to the likes of Dan James and Rodrigo.
