West Brom: Palmer makes Andy Carroll claim

Former England international Carlton Palmer believes that West Brom striker Andy Carroll could have a future at The Hawthorns beyond the end of the season.

The lowdown: Short-term solution

Signed during the January transfer window on a deal until the end of the current campaign, then-Albion manager Valerien Ismael was hoping to soften the blow of losing fellow mid-season arrival Daryl Dike to a hamstring injury.

Since then, Ismael has been replaced by Steve Bruce and powerful frontman Dike is still yet to return to fitness, leaving a 33-year-old Carroll leading the line for the most part.

As the end of the season comes into view, Palmer has suggested that there is room for both strikers to remain part of the Baggies’ squad…

The latest: Money the only issue

Speaking to Football League World, the 56-year-old suggested that the major stumbling block for Carroll’s future is likely to be financial.

The ex-England defender stated: “Well, it depends how much he’s costing you.

“You know, at the end of the day he’s 33 now, he’s played 20 games in total this season, 12 games for West Brom and he’s played eight games for Reading previously. So he’s played 20 games in total, and the goal tally of four.

“Now, he does present a different option for you, in terms of, you know, he is superb in the air, and his hold up and link up play is very, very good when he is fit and whatever.

“So, in answer to the question, it just depends on how much he’s costing you to stay in the building.”

The verdict: Worth the risk

Despite his advancing years and previous injury concerns, the towering ex-Liverpool and Newcastle United marksman has enjoyed a new lease of life in the Championship this season.

Carroll – who was once hailed as ‘unplayabale’ by Alan Pardew – has completed 90 minutes on eight occasions for Bruce’s current side.

The nine-cap England international recently won an astonishing 19 aerial duels against Stoke City (Sofascore), evidence of an unrivalled ability as a target man and proof that the experienced striker can provide a worthwhile understudy to a hopefully fit-again Dike next season.

Windward secure semi-final berth

A round-up of Saturday’s matches in the WICB one-day tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2010Windward Islands edged to a three-wicket victory against Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Trelawny Stadium despite a middle-order collapse that threatened to undermine a solid opening partnership. The win secured Windward a spot in the semi-finals of the WICB Cup.The Windward openers, Devon Smith and Johnson Charles, added 105 for the first wicket, chasing a target of 203, but the innings lost direction after the stand was broken. CCC’s Gilford Moore, who finished with 4 for 41, was instrumental in Windward losing seven wickets for 91 runs. Windward, however, had enough resources to complete victory in the 48th over.Unlike Windward, CCC wobbled at the start of their innings, losing their first five wickets for 85 runs. It needed a half-century from Ryan Wiggins, and useful 30s from Romel Currency and Chadwick Walton, to prop the side up to 202 for 9. Darren Sammy was Windward’s best bowler with figures of 3 for 34.The match between Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago at Sabina Park had to be abandoned shortly into the second innings because of rain. T&T batted first after winning the toss and were dismissed for 225 in the 50th over. Several batsmen got starts but Dwayne Bravo and Denesh Ramdin top-scored with 43 each. Krishmar Santokie and David Bernard were the top wicket-takers for Jamaica, with three strikes apiece.Jamaica lost Xavier Marshall and Chris Gayle during the chase and had reached 45 for 2 after 10.4 overs before the game was called off. Both teams took two points each from the game, leaving Jamaica on two and T&T on six. Jamaica will have to beat CCC comprehensively on Sunday to reach the final four.

Jamie How admits his side will be hampered by the absence of Ross Taylor and Jacob Oram•Getty Images

Jamie How, the Central Districts Stags captain, has said the Champions League Twenty20 is an opportunity for the youngsters in his side to stake claims for higher honours.”It gives them the chance to show what they’re made of on the international scene and perhaps if they perform well, they might even have a chance of being picked up for one of the IPL teams,” How said ahead of the tournament that gets underway on September 10. “Both individually and as a team, we have a chance to pit our skills against the world’s best, which is a very exciting prospect.”Central Districts qualified for the event by winning the 2009/10 edition of New Zealand’s domestic HRV Cup. How was wary of the competition his side will encounter in the Champions League which features the top domestic Twenty20 sides from around the world. “Every team here is here on merit. The fact that they’re here means that they are very good teams, winning or finishing near the top of their individual competitions. Each of the teams has its strengths and weaknesses and we just have to be able to deal with those.”The team will miss the services of two of their key players – Ross Taylor, who will turn out for his IPL side Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Jacob Oram who is out with a knee injury. How admitted his side would be hampered by their, and the injured allrounder Graham Napier’s, absence. “Ross is certainly a big loss for us. He’s one of our best players, and along with missing Jacob Oram and Graham, it’s been a big loss, but it also gives someone else an opportunity to step into their big shoes.”How looked forward to the event and felt the youngsters in his side would enjoy playing in South Africa. “It’s a wonderful experience for the younger guys who haven’t been here, because it’s a great country to tour. There are really great cricket facilities and exciting places off the field. And we’re doing quite a bit of travelling – we play in Centurion, Durban and Port Elizabeth – so we’ll see quite a bit of the country.”

O’Rourke: Max Kilman will be ‘in demand’

Some of the biggest Premier League clubs will be interested in signing Wolves defender Max Kilman this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Kilman superb for Wolves

Bruno Lage’s side are enjoying a strong 2021/22 season, finding themselves on the fringes of the top-four battle after Sunday’s 2-0 win away to Tottenham.

Numerous players have shone for Wolves throughout the campaign and Kilman has unquestionably been a standout figure, having started all 23 Premier League games, receiving a 7.01 rating from WhoScored for his performance at Spurs.

The 24-year-old has been a rock in the back three, so much so that rumours of an England call-up have been doing the rounds.

The Latest: O’Rourke claims Kilman will be ‘in demand’

However, speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that Kilman could be a man in demand at the end of the season, with heavyweight clubs potentially making a move for him.

The journalist stated: “Left-sided centre-halves are always in demand, so I’m sure some of the bigger boys are looking at Kilman as a potential signing in the summer.”

The Verdict: Huge money must be demanded

Kilman has been exceptional for Wolves – he has been hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Molineux captain Conor Coady – so the thought of losing him is a worrying one for the Old Gold.

On the plus side, the 24-year-old’s current deal runs until 2026, putting Wanderers in a strong bargaining position when it comes to demanding a huge fee for his services.

The hope is that Kilman stays put for many years, and the fact that he recently extended his contract suggests that he remains loyal to the club with his peak years only now approaching.

In other news, Wolves have been linked with a move for an exciting young player. Find out who it is here.

Tom Maynard guides Glamorgan to timely success

Tom Maynard cracked an unbeaten 63 from 38 balls as Glamorgan Dragons got back to winning ways in the Friends Provident t20 with a seven-wicket win over Middlesex Panthers in Cardiff

26-Jun-2010
ScorecardTom Maynard cracked an unbeaten 63 from 38 balls as Glamorgan Dragons got back to winning ways in the Friends Provident t20 with a seven-wicket win over Middlesex Panthers in Cardiff. Glamorgan had won their opening three South Group matches but had suffered four successive defeats – and were then stripped off fast bowler Shaun Tait, who had been drafted into the Australia one-day squad. This time they held their nerve chasing down 167 to win with seven balls to spare after Middlesex, who won the toss, had been helped to 166 for 2 with contributions from Scott Newman, Neil Dexter, in his first game as captain replacing Adam Gilchrist, and Dawid Malan. The Dragons were given a fine launching pad in their reply with openers Mark Cosgrove and Jim Allenby – 45 from 35 balls – putting on 56 for the opening wicket. Allenby and Maynard combined to add another 54 from 32 balls with Maynard hitting sixes over cover and midwicket off Dexter and Pedro Collins respectively.Though he lost Allenby and Gareth Rees, 21-year-old Maynard did not panic as Glamorgan were left needing 16 for victory from the final two overs. Maynard, who had been dropped off Collins on 21, released the pressure by hitting Tom Smith for a six over long on and then a four from consecutive balls as he wrapped up the game in the penultimate over.Earlier, Newman had helped Middlesex build a useful base with 48 from 40 balls before Dexter and Malan, with 40 not out apiece, shared a partnership of 76 from the final 44 balls. Newman had an escape on 30 when he survived a leg-side stumping off Robert Croft, but made the most of his life hitting slow left-armer Dean Cosker over long on and midwicket for two sixes from three balls. But just two short of his half-century he perished to a brilliant return catch by Croft, who dived low to his right. From 90 for 2 in the 14th over Dexter and Malan gave the Panthers’ innings some real impetus sharing five sixes between them, but it proved not enough in the final analysis.
