Greatbatch wants tougher approach from batsmen

Five batsmen out from 19 to 29. Mark Greatbatch put on a restrained, if slightly grumpy public face after New Zealand’s latest batting woes but behind closed doors it must have been the roaring twenties. Or more accurately, the roared-at twenties. On a day when all New Zealand wanted was to reach stumps with plenty of wickets in hand, 185 for 5 was not good enough. If there was one saving grace for the hosts it was that in general the batsmen didn’t throw their wickets away. They were the victims of some excellent bowling from Mitchell Johnson and his colleagues. But just as Simon Katich played tough and ugly the previous day, the New Zealanders had to find a way to survive the challenge.”Obviously we’re being outplayed by a better side,” Greatbatch said. “We’ve stayed with them for two and a half days and all of a sudden they’ve put the gas on and we haven’t been able to stay with them. We’ve got things to work on technically and mentally as well. We got good starts on a good surface and you’d expect two or three of those guys to push on and be not out tonight.”You can’t take away from Johnson’s spell. He’s a world-class bowler and he went up a few notches. He was hard to play but in Test cricket you’ve got to do that. Those are the key moments you’ve got to get through and we haven’t been able to get through, to this stage.”BJ Watling and Ross Taylor edged behind when Johnson angled across them, Tim McIntosh was pushed back and watched his stumps rattled and Mathew Sinclair couldn’t quite get his bat in line with a Michael Clarke arm ball. The only case of a batsman trying to be over-aggressive was Daniel Vettori’s attempted sweep to a ball that was too full and which trapped him lbw.By the close of play, New Zealand were relying on Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill to hold Australia off for as long as possible, with an extensive tail to come. However, Greatbatch said there were a few positives to come from the day, all of which were tempered by the overall failure of his men to capitalise on their starts.”Martin Guptill played a mature innings, he’s been circumspect in this series but he’s learning his game and learning the hard way out in the middle,” Greatbatch said. “[Sinclair] fought hard and got through the Johnson spell and faced quite a few balls from him. But there’s five or six guys who have got starts and got out. We’ve got to be tougher and hungrier than that.”Little can be done now to salvage the game and much relies on Guptill and McCullum, who built a 33-run partnership late in the day. If they can reach the thirties, it’s a start.

Everton linked with Alexis Sanchez

Everton have made two great signings already with Rafa Benitez attracting the likes of Nathan Patterson and Vitaliy Mykolenko to the Toffees during this transfer window, but he could be heading for a disaster if he was to sign a certain player who has recently been linked with a move to Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, Inter Milan have offered Everton the opportunity to sign Alexis Sanchez on a free transfer during this winter window.

The 33-year-old has fallen out of favour since Antonio Conte left Inter Milan after winning the Serie A last season, and is no longer a consistent starter under new coach Simone Inzaghi.

The situation was then discussed on GIVEMESPORT by transfer insider Dean Jones who spoke of Farhad Moshiri’s desires for the squad when asked about Sanchez this week: “We’ve seen that at various times over Moshiri’s time there that he really does like having that superstar feel to his team if he can get it.”

Rodriguez disasterclass 2.0

Alexis has been in the headlines this week for scoring in extra time for Inter as they won Supercoppa, describing himself as a “monster” post-match, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’d be a good acquisition.

Everton have become well known for their reckless spending since the arrival of owner Farhad Moshiri, who has signed over 40 players and spent north of £500m during his half-decade at the club, with no progress or trophies since, in fact, the side are just six points away from the relegation zone currently, after enduring a struggle in the first half of the season.

Although Sanchez, who was once dubbed “inconsistent” by Joey Barton, has been a phenomenal player in the past and made a great impact on the club he has played for – helping Conte secure a league title in the Serie A last season with seven goals and seven assists in the league – he is currently on £350k-per-week and in the last years of his career at 33-years-old.

The signing of the outspoken Chilean forward could head in the same direction as the disasterclass that became of the James Rodriguez signing.

He started spectacularly for the Toffees, seeing himself involved in six goals in his first five outings, but soon became injured, inconsistent and as a result, unable to deliver at the level he was expected to. Thus, he became an expensive headache on £140k-per-week which eventually led to his departure on a free transfer in September last year.

If the rumours are true that Everton are interested in signing Sanchez, it will be disappointing to fans who would be hoping that Moshiri has learned some lessons over the last half a decade owning the Merseyside club.

Wasting money has got them nowhere in terms of being successful on the pitch and Benitez should work hard to make sure that the club spends money on wages more wisely rather than splashing them on a player who is out of his prime and unlikely able to start every week.

Victoria hope Cameron White's alright for final

Victoria are hoping their captain Cameron White will be able to switch into first-class mode when they chase consecutive Sheffield Shield wins this week. White has spent most of the year with Australia’s limited-overs sides and has returned from New Zealand to lead his state against Queensland at the MCG from Wednesday.Instead of aiming for a boundary or more an over he will have to operate much more cautiously over five days with his tactics and strokeplay. While players shift formats regularly during a season, White’s jump will be a significant shock as he hasn’t appeared in a first-class match since before Christmas.”Cameron White coming back to turn his head from white-ball cricket into red ball is a big ask,” Victoria’s coach Greg Shipperd said. “It’s a huge challenge in terms of your psychology.”It’s a five-day game and you need to make good decisions for long periods of time, it’s something we managed to juggle particularly well this season. Hopefully he’s able to switch on, on Wednesday. As a captain he played a terrific final for us last year and will be keen to do it again.”White scored a century in the rain-affected draw against the Bulls at the Junction Oval in 2008-09, which secured the trophy for Victoria. The venue this week is the MCG, where the hosts are unbeaten in their past 13 first-class matches. The Bushrangers are also in their ninth consecutive domestic final in all three formats, making them strong favourites against a developing and inconsistent Queensland side. Victoria’s line-up has also changed, with Brad Hodge and Dirk Nannes retiring from first-class cricket, and Shipperd wants the duties shared.”Everyone in the side has got a responsibility to do their job, from the opener pairing in Nick Jewell and Chris Rogers, to David Hussey, to the emerging boy Aaron Finch,” he said. “Andrew McDonald is still wanting to show the cricket world he’s one of the best allrounders in the business, and our aging pace bowling attack, they’ve got a job to do.”Shipperd and the Victorians are aware of Queensland’s desire to win back the trophy after last year and he is most worried by their bowling attack. “Ben Cutting had a terrific season and Chris Swan and Luke Feldman move the ball,” he said. “Our batting has to be on guard.” Rogers has been cleared to play despite a broken hand while the legspinner Bryce McGain has held on to his spot.If the Victorians click, they should have the power to grind down Queensland, although they have had some slips at the last stage. “Our hunger for competition speaks for itself in that we’ve been in 13 of the last 15 finals,” Shipperd said. In the eight previous deciders they have won twice, with those victories coming in the Twenty20 competition.Victoria squad Chris Rogers, Nick Jewell, Rob Quiney, David Hussey, Cameron White (capt), Andrew McDonald, Aaron Finch, Michael Hill, Matthew Wade (wk), John Hastings, Damien Wright, Bryce McGain, Darren Pattinson.

Dew factor in Mirpur prompts early starts

The matches are currently scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m., but board officials said the remaining matches, beginning with Bangladesh’s clash against Sri Lanka on January 8, will start 30 minutes earlier

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will ensure earlier starts to matches in the second half of the tri-series to minimise the effect of dew on the pitches, an issue that has been severely criticised by all three captains. The matches are currently scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m., but board officials said the remaining matches, beginning with Bangladesh’s clash against Sri Lanka on January 8, will start 30 minutes earlier. The 2:00 pm local start was decided after the BCB tried to ensure the matches started 90 minutes earlier. However, Nimbus, the broadcaster, could only push it forward by 30 minutes.”It won’t happen for tomorrow’s [Bangladesh versus India] game, but we are hoping that we can start the next game early, or do it for the other matches,” Jalal Younis, the BCB’s chairman of media communications, told Cricinfo on Wednesday. The dew factor has been threatening to strip the tournament of its competitiveness, with all the captains believing that the toss could be a huge factor in deciding the outcome of the game.Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, showed his displeasure at the end of the defeat against Sri Lanka on Monday and said it could adversely affect the future games. “It was almost unplayable out there,” he said. MS Dhoni too has advocated an early 11.00 am start and Kumar Sangakkara has said early starts, if possible, would make for good cricket. The organisers seem to have been caught unawares about the extent of the damage that the dew has caused to the fielding side. “We really didn’t expect this much dew,” Jalal said. “We didn’t realise that there would have been so much fog and it would be so chilly.”Television is one of the main reasons why the game couldn’t be advanced to take the dew out of the picture. “Nimbus, the official broadcasters, have already sold the product to their partners assuming certain time,” Jalal said. “It involves lots of marketing decisions and thought; it’s not an easy decision to just advance the start. They have even sold the product to Europe. We have been in constant touch with their CEO.”
