Ireland to let their cricket do the talking

The top Associate nation doesn’t want to contribute verbally to the current debate; they want to give the ICC reasons to include them through their performances on the field

Sidharth Monga in Dhaka21-Feb-2011

Niall O’Brien wants Ireland’s cricketing performances to make a case for inclusion in future World Cups•Associated Press

With opinion divided world over on the Associates’ participation in future World Cups, with opinions ranging from that of Ricky Ponting’s to Graeme Swann’s, the one voice that should matter the most, that of Ireland, is typical of how the team plays its cricket. Four years ago, they not only won two big matches and tied one, they also won the hearts of the cricket followers all over the world. Despite continuing the good work, they are still waiting for the elusive Test status perhaps after the Bangladesh misadventure, the ICC is cautious inviting teams into the Test family. The top Associate nation, though, doesn’t want to contribute verbally to the current debate; they want to give the ICC reasons to include them through their performances on the field.Niall O’Brien, Ireland’s wicketkeeper-batsman, knows the uninspiring show by Canada and Kenya on Sunday provides the ICC, and more importantly its commercial partners, reasons to keep the number of non-Test-playing nations in the tournament down. “It’s obviously two disappointing results from Canada and Kenya,” he said. “I am disappointed with how they played, but from my point of view, we pride ourselves in being the top of the so-called Associates and the so-called minnows. So from my point of view, we have got a good enough team to go a long way in this tournament. Yes it is disappointing the way they played, but they have five games to rectify that. Hopefully they put in strong performances in the next three or four weeks.”O’Brien didn’t harp too much on the decision to prune the next World Cup down to 10 teams. “Yes, it is a shame, because the game has got to grow,” he said. “[However], it’s up to the ICC to decide who is going to be a part of the next World Cup. Hopefully we will be a part of that. In the next six weeks, if we can put in strong performances, and win matches, against teams we so-called ‘shouldn’t beat’, as we have done in the past, we only strengthen our case. From our point of view, we are not thinking too much about it. It’s for ICC to think, it’s out of our hands.”Bangladesh, being a Test nation, are one team they so-called ‘shouldn’t beat’, but they have done so at the world events of both the formats they are qualified to play in – and at 74 runs and six wickets, the margins are quite comprehensive too. This game, crucial as it is for both teams’ ambitions to progress to the next round, will be a different kettle. The conditions here will be the most foreign to Ireland, despite all their training against spin in their one-month camp in Pune last year. When they toured here last, Ireland failed to win a game in the three-ODI series.”That was a long time ago, and that schedule, that tour, was a bit hard on us,” O’Brien said. “We only turned up on a Monday, and played 36 hours later in some pretty difficult conditions. That’s a long time ago, that’s past, and we have beaten Bangladesh three of the last four times we have played them. Confidence is high, and we know we have got a good enough team to win here Friday night.”Bangladesh spinners, the likes of [Abdur] Razzak and skipper [Shakib Al Hasan], we have to play them with the respect they deserve, but at the same time we have to be proactive and quite aggressive.”Ireland know a good performance in subcontinent conditions will be a natural progression from four years ago. As long as they can do that, O’Brien feels, the rest will fall in place. “We have got the next four to five weeks to concentrate on our cricket, and 2015 in a long way away. We have got a World Cup here, we have got the T20 world cup in Sri Lanka in not too distant future. We have got plenty of cricket to look forward to. We played Australia in August in Dublin, and should have beaten them. We have got England in August this year, so hopefully we go out there and put in good performances, and let the rest look after themselves.”So 2011 it is, and O’Brien and his side are looking forward to playing in front of full houses, as opposed to in front of four people and their dog back home. On the way if they spoil a few parties, that may or may not include Bangladesh’s, then so be it.

Australia push to win series and raise local spirits

The tourists must succeed in every match to avoid losing the contest, while Australia have the luxury of having some off nights after earning a 3-1 lead.

The Big PictureEngland won quite convincingly in Adelaide on Wednesday but their quest over the final three games remains the same. The tourists must succeed in every match to avoid losing the contest, while Australia have the luxury of having some off nights after earning a 3-1 lead. The hosts were below their best in Adelaide with bat and ball, but always enjoy returning to their Gabba fortress.

Brisbane is currently a city under-going a big clean-up after devastating floods a fortnight ago. The fifth ODI will be a major fund-raiser for victims and will support the Queensland premier’s appeal. The Gabba was not affected by the destruction and the curator was ready to host a game just three days after the Brisbane River peaked.England have only a week to go before they head home for a very short break ahead of the World Cup. Australia’s itinerary is a lot more relaxed and the players are looking and operating like the favourites to claim the trophy.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first)
Australia LWWWW
England WLLLWWatch out for…This part of Australia is Shane Watson territory and he has visited a couple of times over the past two weeks to inspect the flood damage and raise spirits. He grew up in Ipswich and played for Queensland, but has not had any real international success at the ground that was his home before he switched to New South Wales. While he has been Australia’s form player of the summer and scored 161 in the first ODI, the locals would love him to do something special on Sunday.

Chris Tremlett has been one of England’s stars on this trip and can’t believe what is happening to him. First there was a place on the Ashes tour, then a key role, opening the bowling in the one-day side, and being elevated to an ECB contract. “All these surprises keep happening and sometimes I still pinch myself,” he said. He has taken six wickets in the past four games and should be a big threat on the Gabba pitch, which offers pace and seam.Team newsShaun Tait (thigh) and Mitchell Johnson (throat infection) are improving and give Australia some pace options on what will be a lively wicket. Johnson should come in on his old home ground as he looks to re-find form ahead of next month’s World Cup.

Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Cameron White, 6 David Hussey, 7 Steve Smith, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Doug Bollinger.England’s main problem is whether to pick another specialist fast bowler. They went with only three in Adelaide, but Brisbane is a different prospect and the extra speed is vital. That leaves Paul Collingwood and Michael Yardy in vulnerable positions, while the chances of Chris Woakes or Luke Wright being recalled have increased.England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Matt Prior (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Paul Collingwood, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Ajmal Shahzad, 10 Chris Tremlett, 11 James Anderson.Stats and trivia The only international team with a better winning percentage at the Gabba than Australia’s 56.66% is West Indies’ 76.19%. England sit fourth on 53.84% after seven wins in 13 appearances. Australia’s only loss in five games against England here came in 1998-99, when Alan Mullally’s 4 for 18 helped dismiss the hosts for 145. David Gower holds the highest score at the ground with 158 off 118 balls, with 18 fours and four sixes, against New Zealand in 1982-83.Quotes”It’s going to be a very emotional day and hopefully that can help pull us over the line and win the series.”
“We played pretty well the other night in Adelaide and we’ve got some momentum back from that performance. Hopefully we can take it from there, try to do what Australia did and win three games in a row.”

Newcastle keen on Rafael Leao

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of AC Milan forward Rafael Leao…

What’s the talk?

Italian journalist Giovanni Capuano has relayed a report from Repubblica that names the Magpies as one of the teams plotting a bid to sign the Portuguese international, with PIF looking to snap him up.

Ligue 1 giants PSG are also said to be keen on the attacker, who is said to be being courted by ‘half of Europe’ heading into the summer window.

Eddie Howe needs him badly

Milan reportedly want €70m (£59m) for the 22-year-old this summer and the Toon must pay it as the Magpies’ head coach needs him badly.

The gem is a versatile, quality, young player who would solve a big problem for Howe next season. Newcastle lack players with the ability to put the ball in the back of the net on a consistent basis and Leao has proven that he can do exactly that.

In the Premier League this season, Callum Wilson (six) and Allan Saint-Maximin (five) are the only players with more than four goals to their name. This shows that the club need more goalscorers to bolster their attack in order to push up the table next term.

Meanwhile, Leao, who can play out wide on the left and through the middle, has scored ten goals and provided four assists in the Serie A for Milan. This comes after he produced 12 strikes and assists in 22 starts in 2020/21, showing that he can deliver quality in the final third on a regular basis at the top level.

The attacker’s former coach at Sporting, Tiago Fernandes, previously showered him with praise as he compared him to a former Brazil star. He said:

“Rafael is a No 9, he’s almost always played as one. I’d say that he reminds me of ‘Fenomeno’ Ronaldo for his pace, technique and the quality of his finishing.

“Perhaps he still has to improve in the air, but I want to tell the Rossoneri fans that Leao is a champion who can decide a game by himself.

“He certainly has the talent to play for Real Madrid, Barcelona and all the best clubs in Europe.”

These quotes highlight his potential as a player and this means that Howe can work with him on the training pitch to develop him into an even better performer for Newcastle. His statistics for Milan suggest that he would already be an upgrade on what the Toon currently have in the final third, with his scope for development adding another reason why the ex-Cherries coach needs him at St. James’ Park.

AND in other news, Insider: PIF “aiming” to make major Newcastle signing that’ll leave supporters elated…

Khawaja and Copeland win state awards

Usman Khawaja has capped off a summer in which he made his Test debut by being named the State Player of the Year at the Allan Border Medal night in Melbourne

Usman Khawaja has capped off a summer in which he made his Test debut by being named the State Player of the Year at the Allan Border Medal night in Melbourne. And Khawaja’s New South Wales team-mate Trent Copeland joined him in having reason to celebrate after he was voted the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year, barely 12 months since he made his state debut.Khawaja might not play too many matches for the Blues next season, if he establishes himself in the Test line-up, but he was a clear winner this season with 35 votes, ahead of the Victoria allrounder Andrew McDonald on 12. Victoria’s wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and the Queensland fast bowler Chris Swan tied for third with 11 votes each.It meant a runaway victory for Khawaja, 24, who won his first baggy green last month at the SCG, when he replaced the injured captain Ricky Ponting at No. 3 for the final Ashes Test. His domestic highlight during the voting period, which began on February 14 last year, was without doubt his career-best 214 against South Australia in the opening round of the Sheffield Shield in October.Khawaja’s win ended the successful run of the South Australia captain Michael Klinger, who had won the title back-to-back over the past two years. It also meant an award double for New South Wales, with the fast bowler Copeland having picked up 44 votes to beat the Queensland batsman Chris Lynn (27) and the Victoria batsman Aaron Finch (15) for the young player prize.Copeland, 24, barely scraped in to the age-group – to be eligible for the honour, players must be aged 23 or under at the start of the voting period, at which point they must also have played no more than 10 first-class games. Copeland has been a standout performer for the Blues since debuting last January, and he raced to 50 wickets in the first innings of his eighth first-class match. He has followed a long list of stars in winning the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year title, and all 11 men who have preceded him have now played for Australia. The first winner was Brett Lee in 2000, and Shane Watson, Nathan Hauritz, Shaun Tait and Ben Hilfenhaus have all had their names etched on to the trophy. The Women’s International Player of the Year was Shelley Nitschke, who collected the award for the third consecutive year. The allrounder Nitschke, 34, has had a tremendous 12 months, having been named as the ICC Women’s Player of the Year in 2010.She scored 760 runs in 26 matches during the voting period at an average of 30.40, and also picked up 34 wickets at 17.68. Nitschke finished on 76 votes, well clear of Lisa Sthalekar on 50 and the young allrounder Ellyse Perry, who received 40 votes.
