Predicted QPR XI ahead of Nottingham Forest

Queens Park Rangers will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they welcome Nottingham Forest to Loftus Road for their Championship clash this evening.

The Hoops are without a victory in their last two outings in all competitions after a last-minute defeat against Peterborough United was followed by a penalty shoot-out loss at the hands of Sunderland last time out.

Misses from Charlie Austin, Ilias Chair and Yoann Barbet saw the capital club get knocked out of the Carabao Cup last-16 in midweek after their League One opponents held them to a goalless draw in the 90 minutes.

Manager Mark Warburton made several alterations for the Tuesday night encounter, though, and the experienced tactician is likely to recall multiple key names for the visit of Forest.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects the 59-year-old to line up in a few hours’ time, with six changes from the side that started against the Black Cats…

In goal, first-choice shot-stopper Seny Dieng is set to keep his place between the sticks despite keeping just four clean sheets in his 16 appearances this season.

Ahead of the Senegal international is likely to be a familiar back three, with Barbet and Rob Dickie partnering the returning Jimmy Dunne to complete QPR’s defensive unit.

However, Warburton is expected the wring the changes in the midfield. He handed out chances to Osman Kakay and Luke Amos against Sunderland, while Moses Odubajo also featured from the off.

But the trio are set to be replaced by Dominic Ball, Albert Adomah and Sam McCallum, with club captain Stefan Johansen completing the engine room.

The promising Chris Willock is also set to take a place on the bench, allowing Ilias Chair to return to his preferred No.10 position, and the £3.6m-rated Andre Gray is set to follow suit, allowing Scotland international Lyndon Dykes to partner Charlie Austin up front.

Bond tells NZC he's terminated ICL contract

Shane Bond’s potential international comeback remains on track following his decision to quit the ICL

Shane Bond could tour Sri Lanka with New Zealand following confirmation he has severed ties with the ICL•AFP

Shane Bond’s potential international comeback has moved a step closer with the fast bowler reportedly confirming to New Zealand Cricket (NZC) that he has terminated his contract with the ICL. Bond has not played for his country in 18 months, since joining the unofficial Twenty20 tournament, but his decision could fast-track him into the national side for the tour of Sri Lanka in August.Last week NZC decided that former ICL players would be immediately eligible for national selection if they proved they had cut all ties with the unofficial ICL. Bond and fellow fast bowler Daryl Tuffey, who has also terminated his ICL contract, have performed strongly in the recent New Zealand domestic season, and will be likely candidates for a recall.NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan told the he had received documentation from the legal representatives of Bond, Tuffey and Craig McMillan indicating they had cut ties with the ICL. “New Zealand Cricket may wish to take further legal advice on the matter but it does appear, on face value, that those three players have cut their ties with the ICL,” he said. “As long as the documentation is as stated, we move ahead and the players are eligible for selection with fitness and form and all the usual selection criteria taken into account.”Vaughan said Bond had progressed well during training. “I do know that Shane has been training pretty hard recently and is fit and has been bowling in the nets, so I would imagine that as long as this documentation is in order I couldn’t see why he wouldn’t be considered for selection. We’re very pleased that these guys are going to be available to be selected again; it’s tremendous news.”National selector Glenn Turner said Tuffey and Bond would be considered for selection and the national panel “would look at them strongly”. The team to tour Sri Lanka will be named next month.

Spurs chief Paratici keen on Mauro Icardi

Tottenham Hotspur have been named as a potential destination for Mauro Icardi this week…

What’s the word?

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport, the 28-year-old has many admirers across Europe and he could leave Paris Saint-Germain regardless of his marital issues off the pitch.

It’s thought that the eight-cap Argentina international is frustrated by his lack of game time at Le Parc des Princes this campaign, though that should hardly be a surprise as he’s playing second fiddle to names like Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

The report claims he has interest from England but only Spurs are mentioned in that regard, whilst Juventus and Milan are also mooted.

It remains to be seen how much a transfer would cost, with Transfermarkt valuing the out-of-favour forward at just £31.5m.

Icardi solution?

The addition of a new attacker certainly seems to be the priority for sporting director Fabio Patatici as he looks to bolster Nuno Santo’s frontline.

That should hardly be a surprise as reports throughout the summer suggested that the Portuguese wanted to deploy a two-man up top system and he was looking for a new striker to partner Harry Kane, rather than replace him.

But even then, the Lilywhites are woefully short on options in the final third. The England skipper is Nuno’s only senior centre-forward and that’s certainly a major problem.

An injury to Kane, irrespective of his form, would be a killer blow to their chances of success in this campaign.

For example, his last long-term injury saw Spurs crash out of the FA Cup and Champions League, and if the 2019/20 season didn’t come to a halt before restarting, his absence could’ve cost them a place in Europe, too.

Last season, he contributed to 54.4% of all their goals scored in the Premier League, so it’s vital that Paratici and co find him a viable backup, if not partner.

The Argentine has been a regular goalscorer throughout his career and despite a lack of game time in Paris, he still has bagged 36 goals in just 72 matches – a goal every other game.

“Mauro is an animal in the box,” once claimed his former Inter boss Stefan Pioli, a team where he scored 124 goals in 219 appearances.

It’s crucial for Spurs to find another forward this winter and Icardi could be an interesting candidate, given his lack of regular game time under Mauricio Pochettino.

Paratici could solve one of Nuno’s most troubling issues with a swoop for the 28-year-old marksman.

Simmons century silences pitch concerns

Lendl Simmons and Brendan Nash put any concerns about the Grace Road pitch out of their minds as they enjoyed valuable time in the middle on the second day against Leicestershire. Simmons hit the first hundred of the tour, while Nash made a composed 78, and to cap a promising day for the tourists Andrew Richardson struck early as Leicestershire batted again.John Dyson hit out at the surface after 14 wickets fell on the opening day, but progress was much more serene with Simmons and Nash in occupation. Both batsmen will have important roles to play in the Test series next month so the acclimatisation time will serve them well.Simmons made his Test debut against England in Trinidad and was promoted to open in the second innings after Chris Gayle was injured. However, his immediate future appears to be in the middle order where he will probably slot in at No. 4 between the trump players Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. There is a strong Simmons connection with Grace Road after Phil Simmons, his uncle, spent five years at Leicestershire as an overseas player and played a key role in the 1996 and 1998 Championship titles. Lendl reached his century off 192 balls, to add to the one he scored on the same ground for West Indies A three years ago, before retiring three deliveries later with cramp, but that allowed others the chance to have a hit.”It was a pretty flat batting track and I enjoyed it,” Simmons said. “I know my uncle played here a few years ago and I also played here for the A team a few years ago and I enjoyed today – it was a good feeling. I haven’t had a chance to talk to him just yet because he’s been with the Ireland team in South Africa but hopefully when he gets back I’ll have a chat to him.”Simmons and Nash had batted throughout the morning session and the closest the home side came to a wicket was a run-out chance when Nash was on 27. Simmons’ cover-driving was a stand-out feature of his game as Leicestershire’s young attack struggled to make the same impact they did on the first evening.Nash, who proved a tough obstacle for England to shift during the recent series in West Indies, had collected 78 when he retired to give Darren Sammy the opportunity of an innings, but Sammy didn’t last long before providing Alex Wyatt a third wicket. However, stand-in captain Denesh Ramdin and left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn extended the West Indian lead with a stand of 54, which was ended when Ramdin gave Boeta Dippenaar a rare first-class wicket. That was also the signal for Ramdin to declare one ball short of the 100 overs permitted in these three-day games.Richardson then removed Tom New early and although Matthew Boyce and Josh Cobb survived the remaining overs Leicestershire still trail by 87 runs and will have to fight hard to save the match.

Scotland to meet England in Twenty20 warm-up

Scotland will play England in a Twenty20 match at Trent Bridge on June 2 ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 which gets underway the following week

Cricinfo staff05-Mar-2009Scotland will play England in a Twenty20 match at Trent Bridge on June 2 ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 which gets underway the following week.England had been scheduled to be involved in the Stanford quadrangular Twenty20 tournament at the end of May, but with the ECB cutting all ties with Allen Stanford, there is now a gap in the calendar.”This is really tremendous news,” said Roddy Smith, the chief executive of Cricket Scotland. “We played the first-ever ODI against England only last year. Now we’re being pitched in against them in this Twenty20 warm-up game. You can be certain that our players will be up for the challenge, and in this short form of the game anything can happen.””We’re really looking forward to these games,” Scotland captain Ryan Watson said. “They should be a lot of fun, and a highlight of the forthcoming season. However, our thoughts are firmly on the forthcoming ICC World Cup Qualifier in South Africa. We cannot afford to look any further ahead than that.”Scotland will travel down to The Oval the following day to play against Netherlands in their second and final warm-up.

Botha faces stringent test on action

A meeting between the ICC and leading biomechanists last month could ensure a more difficult path for Johan Botha to clear his name from chucking allegations

A meeting of the ICC’s advisory panel of biomechanists last month could ensure a more difficult path for Johan Botha to clear his name from chucking allegations. Bruce Elliott, the University of Western Australia professor who last examined Botha’s action in 2006, said a bowler’s elbow flexion would no longer be assessed by taking an average reading over several overs, but rather on a one-strike-and-you’re-out basis.”In the early days we would take a mean reading from a number of deliveries and determine whether it was over or under the legal limit, but now the situation is that a bowler is not allowed to bowl any balls that extend beyond the 15 degrees during testing,” Elliott told Cricinfo. “It wasn’t clearly written but we had a meeting with the ICC three weeks ago and it was all sorted out.”The transition from average readings to a one-strike policy officially took place in July, 2006, although evidenly there had been confusion as to its application among testers prior to last month’s meeting. Under the ICC’s illegal action protocol, Botha would have been assessed with an average reading during his first test in January, 2006, but not in subsequent examinations carried out in August and November. The protocol reads: “Should the Independent Assessment conclude that the Player’s action exhibits a degree of elbow extension of the bowling arm higher than the said acceptable level, the action of the Player shall be deemed to be an Illegal Bowling Action. It should be noted that in order for the action to be classified as a legal action, the degree of elbow extension recorded for each and every delivery shall be within the level of acceptable elbow extension.”Cricket South Africa has yet to announce where it will send Botha for testing, but it is likely he will again work with Elliott at the UWA. Botha was twice tested at the facility in 2006 – the first resulting in his suspension from cricket, the second paving the way for a return – and must now be reassessed after umpires cited him for a suspect action after the fourth one-day international against Australia in Port Elizabeth on Monday.Elliott said Botha, like Muttiah Muralitharan, could not entirely straighten his bowling arm, resulting in an “abduction angle” that made for an unusual action. He also noted that Botha had encountered difficulty in bowling his doosra legally during testing in early 2006, but after remedial work in South Africa, was able to bowl “the other one” with less elbow flexion than his stock off-break.”It was clear cut illegal the first time, but he was able to bring it down by four or five degrees,” Elliott said. “Because of the abduction angle, or carry angle, he is always going to have an action that catches the eye of umpires and spectators. He has some similar characteristics as Murali, but not quite so severe.”I have not watched him bowl lately, so I don’t know if there has been a quickening up or a regression. But the guys who do bowl the doosra tend to live on the edge. Most who bowl it cannot do so under about 10 degrees, so it obviously doesn’t take much more for it to go over.”The South Africans yesterday continued to voice support for Botha, who is available for selection in the fifth and final one-day international against Australia in Johannesburg on Friday. Coach Mickey Arthur on Wednesday reiterated the comments of Vinnie Barnes, the South African bowling coach, in predicting that Botha would be cleared to continue his career.”Johan has been through this process before and was cleared to continue his career and I am confident that this will happen again,” Arthur said in a statement. “I don’t believe anything major has changed in his action since then but we will obviously respect the process and the outcome.”Johan is a man of tremendous self belief and character. He has shown that both in the way he dealt with the original setback in 2006 and again by the manner in which he led the ODI squad when Graeme Smith was injured. And, with the support of his team-mates and management, I am sure he will put this latest setback behind him as well.”

Butt and Miandad square off

The ongoing matter of Javed Miandad’s resignation as director general ofthe PCB took an ugly turn at a senate hearing as the board chairman andMiandad traded allegations over the fiasco

The ongoing matter of Javed Miandad’s resignation as director-general of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) took an ugly turn at a senate hearing as the board chairman and Miandad traded allegations over the fiasco. Ijaz Butt admitted to the senate standing committee on sports that he had made a mistake in not settling terms and conditions with Miandad when he joined, but refused to apologise to the former captain, who was also present at the session.Instead Butt levelled a number of allegations at Miandad, claiming he wanted more money, that he interfered with selectorial matters and that he wasn’t a capable administrator. Miandad, visibly upset, denied the charges, claiming he would work on an honorary basis for the board if others did likewise. The issue of Miandad’s resignation had been brewing steadily in recent weeks and last week, senators decided to to get to the bottom of the matter, issuing summons to Miandad to appear. In a heated discussion, senators grilled the PCB chief over every little detail of Miandad’s hiring and eventual refusal of a contract. Miandad joined the board in November as director-general, though there was ambiguity over the nature of his role even then. He quit last month, after finally being offered a contract, the terms of which he wasn’t happy with.In particular, Miandad claimed that the nature of his role in the contract letter was significantly reduced from what he had initially discussed with the chairman. That, and not the salary, was what made him change his mind.Butt did admit there were ‘procedural flaws’ in the appointment of Miandad, leaving senators aghast that such an established figure was working at such a senior post without any letter of appointment or contract or indeed terms of reference for the post. “I admit it was our mistake as we didn’t sign a contract with Miandad when he was appointed as DG in December,” Butt said.Butt also claimed that Miandad was interfering in selecting the national team and had asked for a salary of 1.6 million rupees ($20,000) as opposed to the 500,000 rupees ($6,300) offered in the contract. “Miandad asked for a salary which we could not give to him,” Butt said. “I regard Miandad highly as a great cricketer but we can’t pay him more than what we had offered him.”But what must have irked Miandad the most – particularly given how close he always said he was to Butt – was Butt’s belief that he wasn’t a capable administrator. “I have the utmost respect for him as a cricketer and his achievements but he’s not capable of handling either financial ofadministrative matters of the PCB,” Butt said.Miandad’s claims that it was the role and not the money which was a problem were lent solid credibility when he produced an internal board memo circulated on December 4 last year. The memo, with Butt’s consent on it, makes various board directors, of game development, international cricket operations, domestic cricket operations, the national team coach, manager and chairmen of national junior and senior selection committees all answerable to Miandad. The message, at that point, seemed clear: Miandad was to be in charge of almost all cricket affairs. But when the contract was offered to him, Miandad was made head of domestic cricket operations and the department of game development only. “This job could be done by anyone and I feel it was not what I was actually promised by Mr. Butt,” Miandad said.Miandad also said he didn’t take any money from the board in his two-and-a-half month stint and was now even willing to work on an honorary basis – provided other PCB officials did likewise. The senators, mostly bewildered that such a situation could even arise, initially pressured Butt to apologise for the humiliation they perceived to have been heaped upon Miandad. Butt stood his ground and refused to do so, thus leading the chairman of the committee to suggest they both sitdown together privately and sort out the matter.”We believe that if you both could work together for the betterment of the game it will be good for Pakistan, so it’s better you should sit together and resolve this issue privately,” committee chairman Zafar Iqbal said. Before the meeting, rumour had it that Miandad may well find his way back into the board at a post he was happier with. After today’s mudslinging, that scenario has become less likely.
