Preview: Derby XI vs Reading

Despite all of Derby County’s well documented off-field issues, Wayne Rooney’s side’s performances in the Championship so far this season have actually been relatively impressive, with the Rams picking up 10 points over their opening nine fixtures of the campaign.

However, it is undeniable that, following their 12 point deduction for entering administration, as well as a likely further nine-point deduction for breaching the EFL’s financial rules, Derby will need to pull off a miracle if they are to secure survival in the Championship this season.

So, with a win against Reading desperately needed this evening, will Rooney make any changes to the team that started in the Rams’ 1-0 loss to Sheffield United last weekend? Here’s how we think Derby could line up against the Royals, along with the latest team and injury news…

With Kelle Roos’ red card against Sheffield United, coupled with the continued absences of Festy Ebosele, Colin Kazim-Richards and Krystian Bielik due to injury, we predicted that Rooney will make three changes to his starting XI for the visit of the Royals.

Indeed, Roos’ suspension forces the 35-year-old into one change in defence, with Ryan Allsop – who replaced the dismissed goalkeeper against the Blades – coming in between the Derby sticks, while the back four of Lee Buchanan, Curtis Davies, Phil Jagielka and Nathan Byrne remains unchanged.

In midfield, Graeme Shinnie and Max Bird keep their starting spots in the middle of the park, however, both 32-year-old Sam Baldock and £2.7m-rated Louie Sibley – who started on the left and right flank respectively last time out – drop out of the XI for Kamil Jozwiak and the £5.4m-rated Jason Knight.

Meanwhile, Ravel Morrison and Tom Lawrence keep their places in attacking midfield and centre-forward, despite neither player having scored or assisted a goal in their past four appearances.

Rangers fans criticise Jack Simpson dsiplay

Some Rangers supporters have laid into Jack Simpson’s performance in the first half at home to Motherwell.

After the disappointment of losing 2-0 to Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday evening, Steven Gerrard’s side returned to Scottish Premiership action on Sunday.

The Gers had a major incentive going into the game, with a draw enough to take them top of the table, but a victory clearly more preferable.

Gerrard’s men took an early lead through Fashion Sakala, as they took control of proceedings at Ibrox and largely outplayed their opponents.

One player who failed to convince in the opening 45 minutes however was Simpson, as he continues to adjust to life in Scotland.

Aston Villa suffer setback over Martinez & Buendia

Aston Villa have suffered a big setback after confirmation that Argentina duo Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia are set to miss games after the international break.

What’s the story?

The Athletic revealed: “Argentina have confirmed they intend to keep their Premier League players for the entire international break — despite the quartet having to quarantine for 10 days on return.

“Premier League attempted to keep hold of their players who were going to be playing in red list countries due to concerns over quarantine. The current UK government rules state that anyone travelling into the country from a red list nation has to quarantine for 10 days at a government-approved hotel.

“There are no exemptions to this rule, and Argentina is a red-list country. As a result, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia, and Tottenham’s Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso will have to spend 10 days isolating when they return to England after the international break.”

Speaking about Villa in particular, The Athletic confirmed the latest news was a major setback for them, noting: “Villa broke away from the Premier League-wide agreement and said they would release their Argentinian duo for the first two games.

“It meant they would miss Villa’s game against Chelsea on September 11 but then return to action for the match at Everton on September 19. Argentina have now gone against Villa’s public statement. Martinez and Buendia are key members of Dean Smith’s side and their absence for two games will be a blow.”

Fans will be devastated

After the initial confirmation from Villa that they would give permission to the duo to join up with the Argentina squad for their first two games, it meant that the pair would only miss the match against Chelsea on September 11 before being available for the clash against Everton a week later.

However, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that those players who were called up to his squad will remain for the entire allotment of three games, with their last match coming against Bolivia on September 10.

If Martinez and Buendia stay with Argentina until that match, and then have to spend ten days isolating, then not only would they absolutely miss the Chelsea and Everton clashes, but they would also be in serious doubt of missing the Carabao Cup clash against Thomas Tuchel’s side on September 22.

That’s not to mention that their training preparations will be affected, and Dean Smith will not be able to work with the pair. In Martinez’s case as a goalkeeper, that may not be too much of a concern, but for an attacking midfielder and new summer signing like in Buendia, that is something to worry Villa fans – in effect, the Manchester United game on September 25 may also be one too soon as well for the 24-year-old.

Whatever the case, reports that the duo now stand to miss at least two games (if not more) is sure to devastate Villa fans, who must make do without their first-choice goalkeeper and one of their star signings from the summer transfer window for longer than originally anticipated.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa must give this starlet a chance…

Champions League faces rescheduling headache

The inaugural Champions League Twenty20, which was scheduled to begin in Mumbai on December 3, has been postponed in the wake of Wednesday’s terrorist strikes in the city

Cricinfo staff27-Nov-2008ICL and Ranji Trophy also affectedThe ICL has called off its ongoing World Series after a meeting with Gujarat government officials. “The [ICL] executive board decided it was not appropriate to continue,” Kiran More, a board member, told Cricinfo. “We were ready with the extra security but felt the atmosphere in the wake of the Mumbai events was just not right to go ahead with the matches.” The world series, involving India XI, Pakistan XI, Bangladesh XI and World XI, was scheduled to end on Saturday. The Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Hyderabad, which was scheduled to start on November 29 in Mumbai, has also been postponed. The match will now be played between December 2 and 5. The inaugural Champions Twenty20 League, scheduled to begin in Mumbai on December 3, has been postponed following Wednesday’s terrorist strikes in the city. The tournament is likely to be held in India early next year, Lalit Modi, the Champions League chairman, told Cricinfo. However, a spokesperson for Cricket Australia, the founding members of the league along with the BCCI and Cricket South Africa, said it would be tough to include the tournament in the already-cramped schedule for 2009.”We are confident we can hold the tournament early next year,” Modi said. “India will remain the venue, as there was never a problem with hosting it here. All the teams agreed that they wanted to come for the tournament. But we had a problem with finding a third venue after Mumbai. There was no way we could have shifted the venue to Bangalore or Chennai, considering the state of the wickets and the grounds would not have accommodated all the matches.”It won’t be easy for the organisers to find a window for the Champions League early next year. Modi said the governing council meet in the middle of December to finalise fresh dates for the tournament. “We don’t from a CA point of view have an immediate idea on when it might be rescheduled,” Peter Young, the Cricket Australia’s public affairs manager, told Sky Sports. “That’s not a decision that gets made in the first day or two of these things.”The calendar is very busy, that will be an issue. I don’t know if we’ll form a view on an ideal time for a few days at least, maybe longer.” Australia are engaged in home and away series against South Africa, India are due to tour Pakistan and West Indies host England in a four-Test series in February. The one clear break in the international calendar is taken up by the second season of the IPL, due to start in April.A series of terrorist strikes in Mumbai on Wednesday night left at least 100 dead and 250 injured; the situation had not settled by Friday evening, with Army troops joining the security operations. “We held consultations among all the stakeholders including the founding members, the participating teams and members of the governing council after the unfortunate terrorist attacks in Mumbai on Wednesday night,” Modi had said in a statement. “It was agreed that in the best interests of all concerned, the inaugural edition of the Champions League should be postponed.”

Clarke backs ECB's show of strength

Giles Clarke, the chairman of the ECB, has spoken of the ‘impossible situation’ that English cricket faced after Kevin Pietersen’s call for the sacking of the national coach, Peter Moores

Giles Clarke, the chairman of the ECB, has spoken of the “impossible situation” that English cricket faced after Kevin Pietersen’s call for the sacking of the national coach, Peter Moores. However, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Clarke insists that by acting swiftly and decisively to bring an end to the row, the team’s prospects for 2009 have been enhanced.Speaking in the aftermath of a tumultuous week, in which both captain and coach were relieved of their posts, Clarke stopped short of criticising Pietersen, a player whose well-being will be pivotal to England’s prospects in both the ICC World Twenty20 and the Ashes. But he made it clear that his “back me or sack me” ultimatum had left the board with no choice. To accede to Pietersen’s wishes would have set a dangerous precedent for player power, and undermined the management structure of the ECB.”The ECB was faced with an impossible situation and it raised issues that had very serious implications for the game,” Clarke said. “It has been a very difficult time and when the issue arose it was obvious it was going to be horrendously problematic, but a lot of people have behaved with great dignity throughout, not least Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores.”Even though the timing of the conflict left England’s preparations for next week’s tour of the Caribbean in chaos, Clarke believes that the placatory tones that have been voiced in the past few days will stand the side in good stead. “The matter has been dealt with decisively and our focus is now on the future,” he said. “Andrew Strauss is the captain and will be a fine leader, and it is very encouraging to see the players stressing their commitment to pull together under his leadership.”I am delighted that Kevin has reiterated his desire to play for England and actually I think he has handled the whole matter with great dignity. I am a great admirer of his as a player and I look forward to him scoring 10,000 Test match runs and goodness knows how many in one-day internationals.”Two days before the team departs for the Caribbean on January 21, Clarke will know for sure whether he has any challengers as ECB chairman, when the nominations for the forthcoming election close. Few chairmen in the ECB’s history have ruffled as many feathers or faced as many challenges as Clarke, and though the Pietersen saga was an embarrassment that came hot on the heels of November’s ill-starred Stanford Series, the recent thawing of relations with India is arguably an achievement that outweighs both events.”When you have the two most economically important nations working together that can only be a good thing,” said Clarke, whose dialogue with India also helped to dilute the adverse influence that Zimbabwe had been having on English cricket. “When I look back on my original election Zimbabwe was a huge issue for the whole game,” he said. “It isn’t any more. I feel that is a major step forward. As a result we have built a really strong relationship with the government.”
