Southampton fans want Gary Cahill signed

Many Southampton fans are desperate for the club to sign Gary Cahill after they were linked with a move for the former England defender.

The Saints kicked off their season at Goodison Park against Everton on Saturday. They started well, with debutant Adam Armstrong opening the scoring (Transfermarkt), but they were unable to hold on to their lead and eventually lost 3-1. The result and performance showed that while there were some positives to take from the game, Ralph Hasenhuttl has plenty of work to do if Southampton are to improve on their 15th-placed finish from last season.

Perhaps in a bid to shore up their defensive line, the Saints are interested in signing Cahill, according to The Telegraph. The 61-cap England international is a free agent since leaving Selhurst Park earlier this summer and could therefore prove to be a solid new arrival.

He boasts the experience of winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea and has played almost 400 times in the English top flight, with the 35-year-old boasting an impressive CV.

The news was shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra and it attracted plenty of attention from Southampton supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts, with some of them praising Cahill as the “leader” that the Saints need.

-Eu estou à disposição do Zé.

Tottenham submitting new Tomiyasu offer

According to a Tottenham Hotspur source, speaking to Football Insider, the Lilywhites are submitting a ‘fresh offer’ to sign Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Lowdown: Spurs in month-long talks…

Tottenham have been in talks over a deal for Tomiyasu since the start of last month, with Sky Sports revealing that they had a bid of £12.9m (€15m), plus an extra £2.6m (€3m) in add-ons, rejected.

Two weeks later, the Athletic came out with a positive development that Spurs were ‘closing in’ on Tomiyasu’s signing and finalising terms on a fee believed to be around £15 million, plus add-ons.

Since then, updates have been scarce, but reliable reporter Alasdair Gold believes his signing ‘will happen’ going by what he’s heard from the Japan international’s side (football.london Q&A).

The Latest: Spurs submitting fresh Tomiyasu offer…

As per Football Insider, a Tottenham source has revealed that the Lilywhites are now submitting a fresh bid to sign the 22-year-old this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They say that Spurs ‘called a halt’ on their pursuit of Tomiyasu while he was at the Olympic games with Japan but are in fact still interested with a new offer at the ready.

Indeed, Fabio Paratici very much still wants the versatile defender at Spurs and is tabling a £17 million bid for his services.

Tottenham are hopeful this amount will be enough to finally get Tomiyasu over the line.

The Verdict: Get it done…

The 6 foot 2 colossus can play both at centre-back and right-back, so for just £17m, Spurs could solve two problems in one swoop.

At 22 years of age, Tomiyasu also has plenty of time ahead of him, meaning Tottenham could stand to even earn profit in terms of sell-on-value if he keeps performing at a high level.

Lauded as a ‘giant’ player by Italian media for his Bologna performances last term, he made the joint-most clearances per 90 out of their whole squad (3.3) and third-most successful aerial duels on average (WhoScored).

There’s certainly little debating he would be a shrewd addition for Nuno Espirito Santo.

van Jaarsveld heaven-sent for Kent

Martin van Jaarsveld produced the kind of all-round day that would have England salivating if it came from Andrew Flintoff, as Kent turned the tables on Surrey at The Oval

Martin van Jaarsveld produced the kind of all-round day that would have England salivating if it came from Andrew Flintoff, as Kent turned the tables on Surrey at The Oval. Kent started the day simply trying to reduce a hefty deficit but they closed it 92 runs from victory with five wickets in hand and van Jaarsveld at the crease on 70 and Geraint Jones on 5.van Jaarsveld was almost singlehandedly responsible for the turnaround, although he had some assistance late in the day from Darren Stevens (63) as they compiled a 95-run stand that rescued Kent from 28 for 3 chasing 258. Earlier, van Jaarsveld claimed a scarcely believable career-best 5 for 33 as Surrey capitulated for 130, and even earlier again he had completed his second century of the season as Kent lost their final three first-innings wickets to finish with 270 and avoid the follow on.After the first two days brought 17 wickets on a flat pitch, the tally of 18 breakthroughs on the third day might have suggested to those not at the venue that overnight a confused groundsman had accidentally run over the pitch with a plough. In fact the surface was not that bad; certainly there was plenty of turn but as Scott Newman and then van Jaarsveld himself proved, runs were still available if the batsmen applied themselves. The tight contest had been set up by the bowling of van Jaarsveld, who in 191 previous first-class appearances had not managed more than two wickets in an innings and had not been called upon at all this season. But bowling his offspinners in tandem with the more familiar tweaker James Tredwell, van Jaarsveld soon discovered it was to be his day.Playing further back than he needed to against the gentle slow bowling, Matthew Spriegel stepped into his stumps while working the ball through the leg side, handing van Jaarsveld his first wicket. Then came Mark Ramprakash, who must have thought the cricketing gods were smiling on him as he continued to search for that 100th first-class century that has eluded him for nearly two months. Here he was at his home ground, facing a part-time offspinner on a pitch that looked innocuous enough, with his team nearly 200 in front. But perhaps too eager for that milestone knock, Ramprakash got slightly ahead of himself and tried to go over midwicket first ball, instead lobbing a catch straight to Ryan McLaren.Finding himself in the middle of a van Jaarsveld hat-trick would have provided Ramprakash with a career lowlight at the same time as he was looking for an all-time highlight. Fortunately for him van Jaarsveld’s next delivery was safely wide of off stump and left alone by Jonathan Batty. But the first-innings centurion Batty soon risked being another hat-trick contributor when he was bowled trying to drive a big-turning Tredwell delivery through the off side and was followed next delivery by Usman Afzaal. Again the hat-trick was not to be, but Surrey were soon 78 for 6 when Abdul Razzaq padded up outside off to van Jaarsveld. All this time Newman, who had belted Yasir Arafat into submission in the early overs, cruised and registered a comfortable half-century. As if to confirm in his own mind that it wasn’t really that hard, he lofted Tredwell beautifully over his head for six and must have wondered what his team-mates were finding so difficult. But he did have a life on 55, dropped at slip by Justin Kemp off Tredwell, and he was finally trapped lbw by van Jaarsveld. The scoreboard proved what a one-man show it had been for Surrey. When Newman was out for 72, his side was 99 for 7. From there a steady descent was inevitable and despite a late 20 from Chris Schofield, Surrey could only manage to set Kent 258 to win. It was a target that by the end of the day looked distinctly gettable.

> CONFIRA A TABELA DO BRASILEIRÃO

'No one took responsibility' – Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni attributed the upset defeat against Bangalore Royal Challengers on Wednesday to “bad shot selection” from his batsmen

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings captain, has attributed the upset defeat against Bangalore Royal Challengers on Wednesday to “bad shot selection” from his batsmen.”One or two stands could have got us through to a win,” Dhoni said after the defeat. “No one took the responsibility. Couple of bad shot selections affected us today. It was a gettable total.”Chasing a low target of 127, Chennai were comfortably placed at 60 for 0 in the 10th over before a collapse left them 14 runs short of the target. Their opening partnership aside, Chennai’s second-highest stand was only 20 for the third wicket between Stephen Fleming and Suresh Raina.”We changed the batting order according to situation,” Dhoni, who promoted himself to No 3, said. “Most of them floated around. If the players had thought in the middle as much as they thought at the dressing room, we would have won.”The defeat has made Chennai’s task of securing a semi-final berth tougher. If Delhi lose all their games, Chennai can afford to go through without winning another. In case Delhi and Mumbai win one and Chennai don’t, it will be down to net run-rate. If Delhi win both games, Chennai must win one of their remaining two. Dhoni and Co can make matters easier by winning both, but their next match is against Rajasthan, the strongest side, and it may come down to the clash against the Deccan Chargers for them to ensure their spot.”We do not want to wait till the last league match [against Deccan Chargers] and are keen to make the semi-final grade against Rajasthan,” Dhoni said.Chennai’s next game is against Rajasthan on May 24 at the MA Chidambaram Staduim and their final match is against Deccan on May 27.

Vou pensar sobre o time, ouvir a fisiologia…

Crystal Palace: Eagles linked with Matthew Garbett

Crystal Palace are keeping tabs on Falkenbergs ace Matthew Garbett, according to The Sun.

The Lowdown: Garbett profiled

Garbett, who can play as an attacking midfielder, right-winger or centre-forward, has just 18 months remaining on his deal with the Swedish side.

The 19-year-old has made 26 appearances for Falkenbergs after joining in January 2020 and is currently at the Olympics with New Zealand.

He is thought to be one of the most sought-after teenagers in Europe, and it seems as if Patrick Vieira’s Palace are interested in the 6ft 1 ace.

The Latest: Palace not the only club keen

According to The Sun, Palace, along with newly-promoted Brentford and Watford, are tracking the forward.

The report adds that scouts of all three interested sides were impressed with Garbett after he helped his country to the quarter-finals of the Olympics.

The Verdict: Building for the future…

Vieira has already made five additions to his squad, three of whom are 21 years of age or younger.

Garbett seems to fit the bill if Palace are looking to build for the future, and he could play in two positions where Vieira reportedly wants to add too.

According to Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (July 29, 14:33), Palace still want to sign another defender, winger and striker this summer.

It appears as if they may have competition for the London-born forward, though, so they may have to act quick to win the race.

In other news: ‘Parish out’, ‘Relegation’ – Many Palace fans react to Matt Woosnam’s transfer claim.
