Newcastle must avoid new Scott contract

Reports by Chronicle Live earlier this week suggested Newcastle United could yet offer Kyle Scott a new contract, after the outcast midfielder snubbed a move to Major League Soccer franchise FC Cincinnati.

The 23-year-old had been offered a two-year deal to join Jaap Stam’s West End Stadium natives after impressing the Orange and Blue during a trial with the Ohio-based outfit.

But the former Chelsea trainee rejected the deal and has returned to the UK, as the terms presented fell just shy of his expectations.

Stam was keen for Scott to move to Cincinnati and it was expected that the Stamford Bridge product would join the MLS franchise on a free transfer ahead of the first game of the 2021 season on April 17.

Yet Scott is now expected to explore alternative options, as his heart is set on staying in Europe with a top-flight side where first-team minutes will be available.

Scott is believed to feel that senior game time is a must for a player of his age, which has never been on offer at St. James’ Park since his arrival in 2019 having never been included in one of Steve Bruce’s matchday squads.

The Chronicle note that Scott has never even spoken with Bruce, making it unlikely that the Bath-born midfielder will be offered a new deal with the Magpies.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-newcastle-news%2c-gossip-and-views-2″ title=”The latest Newcastle news, gossip and views!”]

Newcastle hold an option to extend Scott’s current contract by a further year to avoid losing him on a free, but it is expected that his United career will end in the same manner as his Chelsea days.

The former United States Under 20s international made just one outing for the Blues before snubbing a lucrative four-year deal, feeling that first-team opportunities were not going to be on offer had he remained at Stamford Bridge.

But Scott’s decision to join Newcastle instead, against an approach from FC Barcelona and interest from a host of top European sides, has turned out to be a disaster for his career as the 23-year-old is back at square one still looking for a breakthrough.

As Bruce is claimed to have never even spoken to Scott, it makes sense for all parties to end their relationship this summer, with United’s Managing Director Charnley blocking any consideration of taking up the Toon’s option to extend his contract.

Scott had glowing endorsements from Eden Hazard and David Luiz when he left Chelsea in 2019, who were said to have encouraged the £45,000-rated dud to try his luck with Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain, but the Magpies have never seen that player.

Injuries played a key role in Scott’s progress stagnating after a “very frustrating” first 12-months on Tyneside, though the following year has only returned four appearances with Newcastle’s U23s in the Premier League 2.

The last of his appearances came back in November, and it speaks volumes that Chris Hogg has never recalled Scott given United have won just three of their last 11 PL2 fixtures and losing on six occasions to sit 12th of the 13 sides in their division.

Scott may not have felt that Cincinnati was the right home for him, but it is clear that Newcastle is not either, making it absolutely necessary for him to leave St. James’ this summer.

Sunderland: Wright endures poor return

When Lee Johnson announced last Friday that Bailey Wright had returned to training, the Sunderland manager had a beaming smile on his face.

Little did he know, however, that his Australian stalwart was going to be thrown in at the deep end after their first defeat in 14 matches.

The Mackems have been brilliant in recent months but their 2-1 loss at the hands of Charlton last weekend dealt an almighty blow to their hopes of earning automatic promotion.

Though, those hopes were dealt another potentially catastrophic blow when they lost to Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening. This was arguably one of the worst performances under Johnson as the Black Cats were made to rue a number of defensive errors.

This was a display that was completely out of character with how their defence have shaped up since February. With Luke O’Nien and Dion Sanderson a centre-back pairing, Sunderland had kept seven clean sheets in 12 games.

That being said, things have fallen by the wayside in the last few weeks; Johnson’s men now haven’t kept a shutout in four matches.

As they fell to a dismal 2-1 defeat on Tuesday, it was their defence who came under scrutiny. Wright was welcomed back into the starting XI after a late injury to Conor McLaughlin which meant that O’Nien had to shuffle across to right back with the Aussie coming in at centre-half.

Unfortunately, both players were left exposed. O’Nien could have done more for both goals as a pair of defensive calamities led to strikes being conceded from two set-pieces.

Wright has usually been so reliable for Sunderland and until his calf injury in February, had only missed one league game.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-sunderland-transfer-rumours-and-news-grigg-denayer-louis-dreyfus-sanderson-melamed” title=”Latest Sunderland transfer news and views!”]

Though, on this display, he could be missing a few more between now and the end of the season. The defender tried to play long balls forward on a regular basis and that led to him conceding possession of the ball on a whopping 19 occasions.

For context, no Mackems played lost it more. That also led to a measly pass success rate of just 69%. Of those to start the game from an outfield perspective, only Charlie Wyke and Denver Hume registered a worse percentage.

Wright did prevail in eight aerial duels but ultimately, he looked off the pace and unfit. That’s hardly surprising given his lack of action but considering how adept he’s been in the past, he appeared to be a shadow of his former self.

At full-time, Johnson claimed that he felt “a little bit let down” by the performance of some of his players.

That was certainly the case with Wright. The boss should revert back to a centre-back partnership of O’Nien and Sanderson next time out.

West Ham insider drops Lingard update

According to West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh, there is plenty of hope behind the scenes that a permanent deal for Jesse Lingard will be done this summer – with GSB apparently happy to pay his £107,000-per-week wages over a three-year-deal.

Per the insider report, agents are currently involved at both club and player level as they attempt to complete an agreement as soon as possible following the conclusion of the 2020/2021 season.

West Ham insider drops major Lingard update

Claret & Hugh explain that the West Ham board are eager to back manager David Moyes ‘to the hilt’ in his desire to secure Lingard on a permanent switch to the London Stadium.

Indeed, the Scotsman has apparently made Lingard his ‘priority signing’ by ‘some distance’ – and the Irons remain confident of tying up the 28-year-old despite some interest from Premier League rivals Leicester City.

Tough Manchester United negotiations are expected, but regardless, West Ham hopes are rising behind the scenes that a deal will be reached in the summer.

One thing that will come before his permanent move is a new Moyes contract, as C&H claim it will ‘certainly precede’ a move for the Englishman.

Transfer Tavern take

Dropping this major update on West Ham’s quest to secure Lingard’s status in east London, the insiders may have shared hugely promising news.

Time will tell whether this comes to fruition, but growing optimism behind the scenes signals real positivity a deal can be agreed.

Leeds suffer major Mateusz Klich blow

Leeds United have suffered a major blow over Mateusz Klich whilst on international duty, with Marcelo Bielsa surely concerned.

What’s the story?

The £13m-rated midfielder was called up by Poland for their World Cup qualifiers this month, with one of those games of course coming against England at Wembley Stadium.

However, Klich is now unlikely to take part in that game or any of the other two fixtures either, with it being confirmed that he has tested positive for coronavirus.

Bielsa will be worried

Despite seemingly falling out of favour for Bielsa in recent weeks – he’s completed the full 90 minutes just twice in Leeds’ last 11 Premier League games – there’s no questioning an in-form and on song Klich can be a real dynamic presence.

In his first 16 top-flight games, the Polish ace bagged himself two goals and picked up five assists, and it was no surprise that former Leeds man Danny Mills waxed lyrical about him.

He said: “I think Mateusz Klich has done very, very well because when Bielsa first came in he was almost surplus to requirements, he wasn’t being used an awful lot before he came in and could have been on his way.

“He’s got talent, he’s a clever midfield player, he’s very fit and he’s reliable. Undoubtedly he’s got quality. Maybe it’s a little bit of a stretch to say he could play in any team in the world. He’s just trying to say ‘I rely on this player, he’s been fantastic for me’ and he has, he’s been absolutely superb.”

If everything gets confirmed about Klich after a second test is done, then the 30-year-old will of course have to isolate and potentially missing training which will leave Bielsa frustrated.

The midfielder hasn’t missed a single league game all season, while there’s also no real telling about how contracting it can have a short-term or long-term impact on a player – you only have to look at how Newcastle star Allan Saint-Maximin has seemingly struggled all season with it.

Bielsa will surely be concerned over the news surrounding Klich.

Meanwhile, this Leeds man has proven to be an absolutely awful signing…

Palace must sign Urhoghide

Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in making Sheffield Wednesday defender Osaze Urhoghide one of their summer additions.

According to The Sheffield Star, the Eagles admire the 20-year-old alongside the likes of Leeds United and Watford – and Urhoghide would be a perfect summer signing for Steve Parish in the summer.

Despite having only broken through at Hillsborough midway through the current campaign, the youngster is earning plenty of plaudits for his performances.

The defender has made 12 appearances so far throughout the season, ten of those being starts. In that time, Sheffield Wednesday have only claimed two clean sheets and lost seven matches in all, but Urhoghide has nonetheless been labelled “immense” by Owls manager Darren Moore.

He will certainly be aiming to continue that excellent form for the remainder of the campaign and into 2021/22 for whoever are his next employers.

Capable of playing in a number of positions including centre-back, right-back and left-back, he would seem to be the perfect addition for Palace.

The Eagles currently have a handful of defenders set to leave the club come the end of the campaign. Centre-backs Gary Cahill, Scott Dann and Mamadou Sakho are all out of contract, whilst right-backs Martin Kelly, Nathaniel Clyne and Joel Ward are also seeing their deals ticking down.

Elsewhere, left-backs Jeffrey Schlupp, Patrick van Aanholt and Tyrick Mitchell could also all potentially leave come the end of the season.

This means that they will certainly need recruits for all three of the positions, with Urhoghide’s versatility potentially coming in hugely useful.

Meanwhile, his age could present another convincing argument in his arrival at Selhurst Park. At the current time, Palace have on average the oldest squad in the Premier League, so younger arrivals would be welcome as the Eagles set their sights on 2021/22.

Available on a free transfer once his own contract runs out in three months’ time, there really is not a negative to Palace potentially signing Urhoghide.

AND in more news, take a look at another young defender would also be a brilliant signing for the Eagles…
