With opinion divided world over on the Associates’ participation in future World Cups, with opinions ranging from that of Ricky Ponting’s to Graeme Swann’s, the one voice that should matter the most, that of Ireland, is typical of how the team plays its cricket. Four years ago, they not only won two big matches and tied one, they also won the hearts of the cricket followers all over the world. Despite continuing the good work, they are still waiting for the elusive Test status perhaps after the Bangladesh misadventure, the ICC is cautious inviting teams into the Test family. The top Associate nation, though, doesn’t want to contribute verbally to the current debate; they want to give the ICC reasons to include them through their performances on the field.Niall O’Brien, Ireland’s wicketkeeper-batsman, knows the uninspiring show by Canada and Kenya on Sunday provides the ICC, and more importantly its commercial partners, reasons to keep the number of non-Test-playing nations in the tournament down. “It’s obviously two disappointing results from Canada and Kenya,” he said. “I am disappointed with how they played, but from my point of view, we pride ourselves in being the top of the so-called Associates and the so-called minnows. So from my point of view, we have got a good enough team to go a long way in this tournament. Yes it is disappointing the way they played, but they have five games to rectify that. Hopefully they put in strong performances in the next three or four weeks.”O’Brien didn’t harp too much on the decision to prune the next World Cup down to 10 teams. “Yes, it is a shame, because the game has got to grow,” he said. “[However], it’s up to the ICC to decide who is going to be a part of the next World Cup. Hopefully we will be a part of that. In the next six weeks, if we can put in strong performances, and win matches, against teams we so-called ‘shouldn’t beat’, as we have done in the past, we only strengthen our case. From our point of view, we are not thinking too much about it. It’s for ICC to think, it’s out of our hands.”Bangladesh, being a Test nation, are one team they so-called ‘shouldn’t beat’, but they have done so at the world events of both the formats they are qualified to play in – and at 74 runs and six wickets, the margins are quite comprehensive too. This game, crucial as it is for both teams’ ambitions to progress to the next round, will be a different kettle. The conditions here will be the most foreign to Ireland, despite all their training against spin in their one-month camp in Pune last year. When they toured here last, Ireland failed to win a game in the three-ODI series.”That was a long time ago, and that schedule, that tour, was a bit hard on us,” O’Brien said. “We only turned up on a Monday, and played 36 hours later in some pretty difficult conditions. That’s a long time ago, that’s past, and we have beaten Bangladesh three of the last four times we have played them. Confidence is high, and we know we have got a good enough team to win here Friday night.”Bangladesh spinners, the likes of [Abdur] Razzak and skipper [Shakib Al Hasan], we have to play them with the respect they deserve, but at the same time we have to be proactive and quite aggressive.”Ireland know a good performance in subcontinent conditions will be a natural progression from four years ago. As long as they can do that, O’Brien feels, the rest will fall in place. “We have got the next four to five weeks to concentrate on our cricket, and 2015 in a long way away. We have got a World Cup here, we have got the T20 world cup in Sri Lanka in not too distant future. We have got plenty of cricket to look forward to. We played Australia in August in Dublin, and should have beaten them. We have got England in August this year, so hopefully we go out there and put in good performances, and let the rest look after themselves.”So 2011 it is, and O’Brien and his side are looking forward to playing in front of full houses, as opposed to in front of four people and their dog back home. On the way if they spoil a few parties, that may or may not include Bangladesh’s, then so be it.

The inability to generate sufficient funding has cost the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) its memorandum of understanding with the ICC. Budgetary concerns means the agreement will not be renewed when it expires on December 31, but the ACA has resolved to continue doing development work despite its cash-flow closing up.The end of the MoU means the ICC will take over the activities of the ACA as part of its own development activities. This will include running tournaments which are part of the World Cricket League, as they do in the Americas, East Asia and Pacific, and European offices.It will leave the ACA with very little of its activity duties. The organisation has yet to detail how it will continue to make itself part of the development of the game on the continent, but they insist they will not be dissolved entirely. For the last seven years, the ACA and ICC’s agreement included a shared funding model in which the ACA had to provide 50% the ICC’s monetary contribution to developing the game on the continent. and 40% of the salary of the ACA CEO, who took on the role of an ICC regional development officer.In an ICC report to the development committee obtained by ESPNcricinfo, the ICC claim the ACA only contributes between 10 and 20%. The ACA has existed since 1997 and since then has only staged one money-making event, the Afro-Asia Cup of three ODIs held in South Africa in 2005. The money generated from that tournament was put into development. The competition took place again two years later in India, so the ACA did not profit from it, and has since not happened again. Essentially that made the ACA financially dependent on the ICC.The ICC acknowledged that while the partnership worked “reasonably well,” it mentioned “complicating factors in managing staff,” and that the development philosophies of the ACA and ICC were “different – largely around the targeting of resources.” This has “generated some tension and created a “difficult working environment for this joint role.”A similar breakaway of the ICC from the Asian Cricket Council is also being discussed.

Mashrafe Mortaza has received a vote of confidence of BCB president Nazmul Hassan to lead Bangladesh in the World Cup. He was appointed captain for the ODI series against Zimbabwe after the captaincy was split across formats for the first time.Bangladesh lead the five-match ODI series 3-0 with Mashrafe performing well with the new ball and Mushfiqur Rahim, who he has replaced as ODI captain, also doing well with the bat. Mushfiqur was removed from ODI captaincy after he led the team to 12 losses in the first 13 ODIs this season.The BCB chief said that he was happy with the ODI captaincy status, and has a contingency plan if Mashrafe’s injury worries catch up.”The decision [to choose the captain] is not yet taken but I think we are doing well with two captains,” Hassan said. “I don’t see any reason to change things around. Possibly, he [Mashrafe] will remain the captain. Since he has a long history with injuries, Shakib has been kept as his deputy. Mushfiq is our middle-order mainstay and we don’t want to burden him with batting, wicketkeeping and captaincy.”Mashrafe was later seen entering the BCB president’s corporate office after the press conference, though he said it was for a personal reason.The BCB president however said that they won’t be sending the team to Dubai for a tournament which also involves Zimbabwe and several Associates despite the board agreeing principally last week.”We had considered going to Dubai but we took everyone’s opinion and decided not to go. Besides it being the highest score made by a batsman at that position, he was able to provide some semblance of modesty to a scorecard that had been wallowing at 25 for 8. The eventual score of 72 though would not have scared too many teams.Having been put in, Nepal lost their top three inside three overs after a double-strike from seamer Tanwir Afzal. Three more wickets in seven balls took care of the middle order by the time the 10th over was completed. Kami added 43 runs with Shakti Gauchan for the ninth wicket, walloped a hat-trick of fours in the 18th over and a couple of sixes in the 19th before being dismissed.Hong Kong’s chase followed a similar narrative as three of the top six had bagged ducks and the score slumped to 21 for 5.
