Captain Varun Chopra guided Warwickshire to a Royal London Cup Group B victory over Glamorgan at Swansea under the Duckworth-Lewis method. After being put in to bat, Glamorgan had reached 225 for 7 in 39 overs when heavy rain caused a near three-hour delay. When play restarted after a major mopping-up session the Bears, who are still in the mix to reach the quarter-finals, were required to chase 90 to win from 10 overs. The visitors managed that with nine balls to spare with Chopra (39 from 26 balls) winning the match with a straight six off Michael Hogan in the penultimate over. Will Porterfield struck Hogan and Jim Allenby for sixes as they reached 23 for 0 after two overs, but Porterfield holed out to Dean Cosker on the midwicket boundary. But the loss of Porterfield did not stop Warwickshire from reaching the halfway stage of their total after four overs.Cosker struck again in the sixth over to have Laurie Evans caught at deep extra cover as the Bears reached 54 for two and, though Rikki Clarke took some of the pressure off by striking Cosker for a four first ball, he was run out with a direct throw leaving the Bears needing a further 29 from 21 balls.Glamorgan’s hopes were not helped when Gareth Rees dropped Ateeq Javid and David Lloyd’s over went for 13 and it left the Bears needing 13 from the final two overs.Earlier, the mainstay of Glamorgan’s innings was a pair of half-centuries from Jacques Rudolph and Murray Goodwin. Rudolph’s half-century was his fifth in seven innings and he is the highest run-getter in the competition.Glamorgan suffered four separate rain breaks in their innings, which reduced the overs from 50 to 39. Rudolph put on 47 for the first wicket with Jim Allenby, who played on to Recordo Gordon.Rees, who had been preferred to fellow left-hander Will Bragg, made only 4 before being caught behind trying to leave a ball from Rikki Clarke. Rudolph, whose 50 came up off 71 balls with seven fours, put on 76 in 12 overs with Goodwin. But at 136 for 2, Rudolph was stumped by Tim Ambrose giving offspinner Jeetan Patel the charge on 57.Goodwin, who went to 50 from 40 balls with six fours and a six over long-off, and Chris Cooke continued to accelerate Glamorgan’s innings. The score had reached 163 for 3 when Goodwin was caught at midwicket and he was followed by Graham Wagg who holed out at long-off and Cooke who was stumped.Glamorgan took the Powerplay for the last two overs but lost Lloyd to the first ball skying one to long-off and were only able to have one of the Powerplay overs before rain ended the innings.

O’Rourke: Max Kilman will be ‘in demand’

Some of the biggest Premier League clubs will be interested in signing Wolves defender Max Kilman this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Kilman superb for Wolves

Bruno Lage’s side are enjoying a strong 2021/22 season, finding themselves on the fringes of the top-four battle after Sunday’s 2-0 win away to Tottenham.

Numerous players have shone for Wolves throughout the campaign and Kilman has unquestionably been a standout figure, having started all 23 Premier League games, receiving a 7.01 rating from WhoScored for his performance at Spurs.

The 24-year-old has been a rock in the back three, so much so that rumours of an England call-up have been doing the rounds.

The Latest: O’Rourke claims Kilman will be ‘in demand’

However, speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that Kilman could be a man in demand at the end of the season, with heavyweight clubs potentially making a move for him.

The journalist stated: “Left-sided centre-halves are always in demand, so I’m sure some of the bigger boys are looking at Kilman as a potential signing in the summer.”

The Verdict: Huge money must be demanded

Kilman has been exceptional for Wolves – he has been hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Molineux captain Conor Coady – so the thought of losing him is a worrying one for the Old Gold.

On the plus side, the 24-year-old’s current deal runs until 2026, putting Wanderers in a strong bargaining position when it comes to demanding a huge fee for his services.

The hope is that Kilman stays put for many years, and the fact that he recently extended his contract suggests that he remains loyal to the club with his peak years only now approaching.

In other news, Wolves have been linked with a move for an exciting young player. Find out who it is here.

South Africa complete comfortable clean sweep

A trio of changes to both teams and a change of approach which saw Zimbabwe bat first brought no change in proceedings as South Africa won again

The Report by Firdose Moonda21-Aug-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsElton Chigumbura made 90, but Zimbabwe could still post only 165•AFP

A trio of changes to both teams and a change of approach which saw Zimbabwe bat first brought no change in proceedings as South Africa swept their eighth three-match series against Zimbabwe. Even without their regular ODI captain AB de Villiers, who was rested for this match, two debutants in their XI and being a batsman short, South Africa dominated a Zimbabwean team that were without their senior-most batsman Brendan Taylor, who was dropped along with Brian Vitori and Neville Madziva.Taylor’s axing came just two games after he was relieved of the limited-overs captaincy and after he managed just 20 runs in the two matches before this one. His long-standing reputation as the pivot around which the middle-order functions earned him no rope but his absence was notable as Zimbabwe suffered another collapse. Five wickets fell for 15 runs a six-over period to undo the recovery Sikandar Raza and Elton Chigumbura fashioned following another stuttering start. With an additional seamer in their XI, South Africa posed even more of a threat than usual and Zimbabwe were silenced from the start. Kyle Abbott and Marchant de Lange added another item to the things they have in common after both took seven wickets on Test debut, when they both claimed wickets in their first over of this match. Abbott had Hamilton Masakadza out lbw when he beat his inside-edge with a full delivery and de Lange, making his return after 30 months out of the international game, had Richmond Mutumbami caught at second slip with his first ball.Chigumbura’s was promoted to Taylor’s No. 4 position but it was Sikandar Raza Butt, not the new captain, who calmed the early nerves. Butt was confident against the both the short and the full ball and struck seven boundaries which suggested he could single-handedly haul Zimbabwe out of trouble. He sent Abbott through midwicket, smoked de Lange through the covers and took three fours off Ryan McLaren first over but then threw it away.Faf du Plessis stationed a man at deep square leg for the pull and Raza played one straight into his hands, leaving Chigumbura to steer the innings from the 11th over. Sean Williams was in even earlier than he has been in the two matches so far but did not produce this time. He hung around with Chigumbura for 11.2 overs in which Parnell and rookie Mthokozisi Shezi squeezed them with changes of pace, and was bowled when trying to sweep Aaron Phangiso. The loss of Williams forced Chigumbura to become even more quiet, an approach Malcolm Waller mirrored so well his presence barely registered on the radar. Waller scratched around until he was caught behind off the glove off de Lange. The next four wickets fell swiftly as Abbott claimed a second, Parnell took two in two and Shezi got first international scalp when Tafadzwa Kamungozi was given out lbw even though the ball pitched outside leg stump.Amid the carnage, Chigumbura had crawled to 48 and as soon as the Powerplay began, he converted that. He whipped a Parnell yorker through midwicket to reach his half-century off 102 balls, and then cut loose.McLaren’s slower bouncer took the most punishment and Chigumbura plundered two fours and then two sixes in consecutive overs. Chigumbura scored 40 off 20 balls to reach his highest ODI score and frustrate South Africa’s bowlers at the end but his contribution was never going to be enough to force a favourable result for Zimbabwe.A sliver of hope came when Rilee Rossouw was run-out in the first over thanks to his own urgency to get off the mark and Waller’s direct hit, but South Africa’s line-up had their best to come. Quinton de Kock made himself at home in a senior role and scored briskly while du Plessis played with more freedom than he has all series. Before 10 overs were up, South Africa had already cut the target to less than 100. The second-wicket stand was worth 73 when du Plessis was bowled through the gate by Sean Williams but de Kock seemed certain to take South Africa to the close. He brought his second half-century of the series with a chip over mid-off and his aggression after that took him within touching distance of a century. After sending Tinashe Panyangara over long-off for six, de Kock tried to do it again but misplaced it to deep midwicket to leave JP Duminy to finish it off.South Africa won inside 28 overs and will enter the triangular series, which also involves Australia, brimming with confidence. Zimbabwe will head there in the opposite frame of mind. They remain starved of success and now have created more questions for themselves to answer ahead of duels with two of the most intimidating outfits around.

Gayle strikes maiden CPL ton in Tallawahs win

Chris Gayle feasted on a tame St. Lucia Zouks bowling attack for an unbeaten 111 in a seven-wicket win for the Jamaica Tallawahs, the first century in Caribbean Premier League history

Chris Gayle may have struggled through IPL 2014 with 196 runs in nine games, modest figures for his lofty standards, but his poor form in India was a distant memory in Grenada on Saturday as he feasted on a tame St Lucia Zouks bowling attack to score an unbeaten 111 in a seven-wicket win for the Jamaica Tallawahs. Zouks captain Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a target of 162 but Man-of-the-Match Gayle made easy work of the chase for the defending Caribbean Premier League champions, overhauling the target with an over to spare.Gayle’s carefree demeanour was on display as he arrived at the crease sporting sunglasses underneath his helmet. Based on the evidence of his innings, the trend-setting Jamaican might influence a few more cricketers to wear them while batting after clubbing five fours and 10 sixes in his innings which lasted 63 balls. After getting off the mark with a single, he launched Garey Mathurin over long-on for six in the third over and gave a rude welcome to Shane Shillingford to start the fifth with a near carbon copy blast down the ground. He brought up his 50 off 30 balls in the ninth over by crushing left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe for his sixth six flat and hard into the signage beyond the boundary at long-off. The landmark came up during a 64-run second-wicket stand with Jermaine Blackwood, in which Blackwood contributed eight runs. Blackwood fell off the first ball of the 12th to Shillingford to make it 96 for 2 but the wicket the Zouks needed to turn the match their way eluded their grasp.Gayle began the 19th over on 99, having added another half-century stand with Adam Voges, and brought up the first century in the CPL with a single to mid-on. After Voges fell two balls later, Gayle hastened the charge to victory with a four and six over midwicket to level the scores, before flicking a single through the same region to finish the match.Henry Davids scored 56 off 38 for the Zouks earlier in the day, forming a solid 69-run second-wicket partnership with Andre Fletcher (27). Davids received good support earlier from Johnson Charles (27) as well before falling with the score on 110.Captain Sammy came to the crease and provide a strong finish for the Zouks with 29 not out that led the team to 161 for 5. Andre Russell took 2 for 27 for the Tallawahs in the field. The Zouks performance was comfortably stronger than either of the previous two totals posted by the Tridents and Hawksbills batting first in the opening round of games played at the National Cricket Stadium. By the end of the day it was no match for another history-making feat by Gayle.
