Debutant Coughlin swings balance

The clash between two teams battling to avoid Championship relegation produced a rollercoaster opening day which swung back Durham’s way via an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 126 between Phil Mustard and Paul Coughlin.Making his Championship debut because of injuries to Graham Onions, Mark Wood and Jamie Harrison, 21-year-old Coughlin fearlessly rode some early luck to make an unbeaten 71 against Lancashire, with Durham ending on 310 for 8. Mustard, dropped down to No. 8, showed unusual restraint in reaching 64. Prior to his arrival the balance had tipped Lancashire’s way through a five-wicket haul for Kyle Hogg. After the start was delayed for 15 minutes by rain Durham were inserted in overcast conditions and raced to 70 for 1 after 13 overs. They then took a further 37 overs to double the score while losing five more wickets before Gordon Muchall and Mustard put on 57.Muchall departed for 35 when a sweetly timed clip off Hogg flew straight to midwicket and the bowler completed his haul when John Hastings pushed forward and edged behind.National selector James Whitaker was present to watch Ben Stokes after surprisingly leaving him out of the squad for the first Test. But the allrounder made only 21 before he was bowled by a ball from Kabir Ali which kept low.Whitaker would also have been interested in Lancashire’s left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan, but in conditions much more suited to the seamers he had none for 31 in nine overs. Australia Test batsman Usman Khawaja was making his debut for Lancashire.Glen Chapple’s decision to insert on an overcast morning made more sense than when Middlesex chose to field in sunny conditions in the last match here and proceeded to bowl poorly in conceding a total of 568 for 9. But Lancashire did not bowl badly early on and with conditions in their favour they always looked as though they should be taking wickets. The Durham openers rode their luck with thick edges contributing to Kabir conceding 27 of the 28 runs which came off the first six overs.Hogg was always threatening, as much through the extra bounce he occasionally extracted as from the modicum of sideways movement. It was the bounce which accounted for Paul Collingwood, caught at gully. But although he finished with five wickets, he bowled no better than the wicketless Chapple, who played a key role in strangling the innings after its rapid start. He kept a firm lid on Stokes, who diligently survived some probing bowling after lunch then straight drove the first ball of Kabir’s second spell for four, only to be bowled by the next.Conditions eased in the evening and although Coughlin enjoyed some luck none of the seamers could do anything to unsettle him.

Everton linked with Alexis Sanchez

Everton have made two great signings already with Rafa Benitez attracting the likes of Nathan Patterson and Vitaliy Mykolenko to the Toffees during this transfer window, but he could be heading for a disaster if he was to sign a certain player who has recently been linked with a move to Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, Inter Milan have offered Everton the opportunity to sign Alexis Sanchez on a free transfer during this winter window.

The 33-year-old has fallen out of favour since Antonio Conte left Inter Milan after winning the Serie A last season, and is no longer a consistent starter under new coach Simone Inzaghi.

The situation was then discussed on GIVEMESPORT by transfer insider Dean Jones who spoke of Farhad Moshiri’s desires for the squad when asked about Sanchez this week: “We’ve seen that at various times over Moshiri’s time there that he really does like having that superstar feel to his team if he can get it.”

Rodriguez disasterclass 2.0

Alexis has been in the headlines this week for scoring in extra time for Inter as they won Supercoppa, describing himself as a “monster” post-match, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’d be a good acquisition.

Everton have become well known for their reckless spending since the arrival of owner Farhad Moshiri, who has signed over 40 players and spent north of £500m during his half-decade at the club, with no progress or trophies since, in fact, the side are just six points away from the relegation zone currently, after enduring a struggle in the first half of the season.

Although Sanchez, who was once dubbed “inconsistent” by Joey Barton, has been a phenomenal player in the past and made a great impact on the club he has played for – helping Conte secure a league title in the Serie A last season with seven goals and seven assists in the league – he is currently on £350k-per-week and in the last years of his career at 33-years-old.

The signing of the outspoken Chilean forward could head in the same direction as the disasterclass that became of the James Rodriguez signing.

He started spectacularly for the Toffees, seeing himself involved in six goals in his first five outings, but soon became injured, inconsistent and as a result, unable to deliver at the level he was expected to. Thus, he became an expensive headache on £140k-per-week which eventually led to his departure on a free transfer in September last year.

If the rumours are true that Everton are interested in signing Sanchez, it will be disappointing to fans who would be hoping that Moshiri has learned some lessons over the last half a decade owning the Merseyside club.

Wasting money has got them nowhere in terms of being successful on the pitch and Benitez should work hard to make sure that the club spends money on wages more wisely rather than splashing them on a player who is out of his prime and unlikely able to start every week.

– Contra o Cruzeiro o time começa bem. Estava sendo vaiado antes do jogo com razão. O Pato faz o gol, e o São Paulo passou 30 ou 40 minutos como líder do campeonato. Ainda teriam outros jogos e tal. E a torcida xingando.

McCullum, Jadeja sink Knight Riders

Chennai Super Kings enjoyed a seamless game with Brendon McCullum slamming his third fifty in six games and their spin contingent strangling Kolkata Knight Riders by 34 runs

The Report by Alagappan Muthu02-May-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details7:09

Agarkar: KKR need to decide on openers

The Chennai Super Kings playbook has one abiding formula: a top-order contribution, a blitz from the finishers and a strangle by the spinners. Brendon McCullum took care of objective one with his third half-century in six matches, MS Dhoni swung his bat around to lift the total to 148 in a rain-reduced match and Ravindra Jadeja swindled 4 for 12 to down Kolkata Knight Riders with ease.Robin Uthappa, who opened for Knight Riders, posed the greatest threat with his execution matching his intent. He crunched four fours and a six on either side of losing his partner Gautam Gambhir in the third over. He was conscious to use his feet, unafraid of going aerial and the reverse sweep was a trusted weapon as well. But his stroke-play coincided with a dreadful collapse at the other end. The introduction of spin left Knight Riders 39 for 4 at the end of the Powerplay, too deep a hole to escape from no matter how long Yusuf Pathan managed to biff the ball down the ground. The Jadeja-R Ashwin combination plucked three wickets in five balls and Knight Riders’ middle order was broken inside the first six overs. Uthappa waged his battle until he became Jadeja’s fourth victim to hand the left-arm spinner the best figures of the season. The start of the Indian leg of the IPL was delayed by an hour and 40 minutes after an unseasonal shower in Ranchi limited the game to 17 overs a side. Knight Riders utilised spin for the entirety of the Powerplay and were encouraged by some help from the pitch. But a persistence in pushing the balls through allowed McCullum to settle and shepherd Super Kings past the loss of Dwayne Smith in the third over.Piyush Chawla was particularly adamant in refusing to flight the ball. Suresh Raina and McCullum had no qualms with that as they joined hands for a brisk 70-run stand for the second wicket. The introduction of pace did little to stem the flow of runs as Vinay Kumar fed McCullum with a steady diet of short balls that ended up being thudded into the midwicket boundary. The five overs between the eighth and 12th yielded 51 runs for one wicket.Sunil Narine was his usual miserly self and Super Kings seemed to be running out of gas in the final overs, especially when McCullum was caught in the deep for 56. But some initiative and wayward bowling from Andre Russell, who was brought in for Morne Morkel, allowed the home side to finish on a high. Those extra runs ensured Yusuf’s late pummeling in the Knight Riders’ chase was inconsequential. He blazed three sixes in the penultimate over and each of them gave the fielder no chance. Knight Riders would hope the next time he wields the long handle, the equation will not read 59 off 12.

Clarke won't temper Australia's aggression

Australia’s captain insists his side plays the game “extremely fairly” and has no intention of reining in the overt aggression that was central to the team’s victories over England and South Africa last summer

Daniel Brettig30-Apr-2014Australia’s captain Michael Clarke insists his side plays the game “extremely fairly” and has no intention of reining in the overt aggression that was central to the team’s victories over England and South Africa last summer. In a theme familiar to members of the great Australian combinations of the recent past, triumphs in the Ashes and then even more notably over the world’s No. 1 team on their home territory had to compete for room in the public sphere with criticism of how Clarke’s men conducted themselves on the field. The final Test of the South Africa series in Cape Town was particularly fiery, as Clarke, James Pattinson and David Warner were all involved in confrontations with opponents in their pursuit of a win that was ultimately secured with minutes to spare. The ESPNcricinfo columnist Martin Crowe has been among the most vocal in his opposition to Australia’s aggression, penning a sharply-worded piece for the that stated “too often, it becomes crudely personal. And that is when cricket’s spirit and integrity are lost”.Clarke took note of Crowe’s words but disagreed, stating that the team had played the game hard but fair over the past 12 months with the exception of two incidents for which he had admitted fault – an exchange with James Anderson broadcast via stump mic during the Brisbane Ashes Test and another with Dale Steyn during the final drinks break at Newlands.”Firstly Martin Crowe’s certainly entitled to his opinion, like the rest of us. I think we play our cricket hard on the field but I think as Australians we understand and respect there’s a line you can’t cross,” Clarke told ESPNcricinfo in New York. “I made no bones about the incident in Brisbane and what I said to James Anderson wasn’t appropriate, especially being over stump mic where boys and girls can hear that, and I did the same with the Dale Steyn incident.”Sometimes when you’re playing sport at the highest level, emotions come out for people to see, and I think that’s a great thing about our game. But we understand there’s a line you can’t cross. You can go close to it, but you can’t cross it. I think generally Australians play cricket extremely fairly, and play sport extremely fairly. I can tell you in my career 100 different instances like those that nobody knows about, because it’s not over the stump mic, or you can’t see it first-hand.”Michael Clarke says Australia have played hard but fair over the last 12 months, apart from stray incidents such as his heated exchange with James Anderson in Brisbane•Getty Images

Other voices were raised in objection to the conduct of Clarke’s team following the South Africa series, emanating from the Australian press. In the , the senior cricket writer Robert Craddock wrote that “the sight of Michael Clarke angrily confronting umpires and Australian fieldsmen barking like dogs at batsmen left a lot of people cold and alienated from the team and its success.”If a captain is carrying on like a saucepan whose lid has just popped off it is hardly surprising his team is running out of control. It’s a shame Australia behaved so poorly because this was an epic triumph.”In the , David Sygall wrestled with similar disappointment. “The Australian psyche is characterised by uncompromising toughness, determination and dignity,” he wrote. “Those traits must no longer be confused with boorish and bullying behaviour. After another significant win by our national cricket team, too many people are only half-celebrating. Too many people feel the team has not spoken for them.”Nevertheless, Clarke remained steadfast in his conviction that the team have conducted themselves fairly, and that CA and the ICC were invariably quick to step in with a harsh word and a sanction on the odd occasions that they did not.”The Australian way is to play tough, non-compromising cricket on the field. I think if you speak to a lot of the other [international] players you’ll find that we’re very social off the field, we go out of our way to make sure we see the other team, win, lose or draw, after a game,” Clarke said. “But with that we understand there’s a line you can’t cross and I think generally we’re pretty good on that.””The integrity of the game’s crucial, we all know that as players, and certainly as captain of Australia that’s a big part of my job to make sure that we always uphold the integrity of the game. With those sorts of things, when you’re out of line you get pulled up by CA or the ICC anyway, so there’s things in place to ensure you don’t overstep that mark.”A little under two months since the conclusion of a wildly successful summer, Clarke has had time to reflect upon the team’s achievements, and said he hoped they would prove to be the start of sustained excellence from the national team. Such a pattern would contrast with that of the 2006-07 side who also swept England at home, in what came to be recognised as the final hurrah of a dominant era spanning more than 20 years.”In 2007 we had a team with a lot of experience. Five, six or seven of those players will go down as the greatest. If you picked an all-time great Australian team there could have been five of them in that team,” Clarke said. “I don’t think we have that calibre in our team right now individually, but we certainly have a great team and I think we’ve proved that to a lot of people over the last 12 months.”The other side to that is we have a lot of improvement to do. Our greatest challenge is to not only win in Australia but also win away from home, and that’s why it was so pleasing to us as a team to beat the No. 1 team in their own backyard.”Australia’s next Test match assignment will be against Pakistan in the UAE in October, before home Tests against India ahead of the 2015 World Cup.
