What Steve Parish is doing to stop Oliver Glasner from joining RB Leipzig

Steve Parish is now making progress in contract talks with a key Crystal Palace figure, according to a recent report.

Crystal Palace continue search for new sporting director

The Eagles announced last week that sporting director Dougie Freedman would be leaving Selhurst Park to pursue a move abroad after joining the club in 2017. That means Palace have been looking for a replacement for the Scot, and several names have been linked to the vacancy.

Glasner gives green light for 45 y/o to replace Freedman at Crystal Palace

A new name has emerged as the frontrunner to become Crystal Palace’s new sporting director.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 20, 2025

It’s been reported by Sky Sports that Palace have drawn up a shortlist of options to replace Freedman, and those options consist of Middlesbrough’s Kieran Scott, who has been key in their recent success in the transfer market, Lee Dykes of Brentford and Iain Moody, who has worked at Palace before but had to resign back in 2013 due to alleged inappropriate texts.

A new name was then thrown into the mix, as Tim Steidten was named to be in pole position to become Palace’s new sporting director. The German has recently left West Ham under a bit of a cloud, but that has put off the South Londoners, despite Oliver Glasner giving his go-ahead to the appointment.

Parish looking to seal new contract for Glasner amid RB Leipzig interest

While the Eagles continue their search for a new sporting director, Football Insider reports that Crystal Palace are progressing in finding an agreement with Glasner over a new contract.

Crystal Palace manager OliverGlasnerbefore the match

The report states that Palace are looking to tie Glasner down to a new contract after the Austrian managed to turn the season around. He has recently been named as someone who is of interest to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, who are looking for a replacement for Marco Rose, and the Eagles are keen to end that speculation, as talks between all parties are ongoing over a new deal.

Given Freedman’s exit from Selhurst Park, Parish wants to avoid any more upheaval ahead of the summer transfer window and therefore wants Glasner’s future to be resolved quickly. The 50-year-old will enter the final year of his contract at the end of this campaign, and it is reported that he is happy at Selhurst Park, but he will look to seek assurances that the club will try to keep their best players and build on their success.

This comes at a time when defender Marc Guehi continues to be linked with a move to Premier League teams, and midfielder Adam Wharton is also a player who is on the radar of Manchester United and Manchester City.

Both players are important to Glasner, and he will know that if these players leave the club, it will only make his job harder next season, so it will be interesting to see if the boss extending his stay goes hand in hand with any player contract renewals.

Italy's quest to find a new manager for the national team continues, with reports from Italy (h/t Calciomercato) claiming that the Italian football federation (FIGC) have shortlisted three legendary former players — Fabio Cannavaro, Gennaro Gattuso, and Daniele De Rossi — to take charge of the Azzurri.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Italian national team have going through a turbulent time ever since winning the European Championship in 2021, failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Following Italy's harrowing 3-0 defeat to Norway last week, FIGC decided to sack Spalletti from his role, leaving the post vacant. In the days since, Claudio Ranieri was approached, with fans even clamoring for his appointment. However, the former Roma and Leicester City boss turned down the offer. Then, Italy turned to former AC Milan and current Al-Nassr coach Stefano Pioli, but he, too, declined the opportunity.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

There's still a minor chance that Pioli accepts FIGC's invitation to become Italy's national team manager. Although he remains contracted to Al-Nassr until 2027, he is expected to return to Serie A this summer and sign a three-year deal with Fiorentina, with a verbal agreement already in place. The final decision, though, will rest on the head coach.

    WHAT NEXT?

It remains to be seen if one of Cannavaro, De Rossi, or Gattuso take up the managerial role and revive the fortunes of the national team. The FIGC will have to move fast, with the next set of international games scheduled to be played in September.

Adam Lyth's unbeaten fifty puts Durham under early pressure

Yorkshire openers share century stand to help hosts make most of less than half a day’s play

ECB Reporters Network25-Jul-2023Runaway Division Two leaders Durham are under early pressure at Scarborough after Yorkshire openers Adam Lyth and Fin Bean shared a century stand to help the hosts make the most of just less than half a day’s play due to hail and heavy rain at Scarborough.Lyth and Bean shared 113 inside 31 overs after the visitors had elected to bowl at the start of this LV= Insurance County Championship fixture, contributing to a close of play 142 for two from 38 overs.Lyth led the way with 75 not out off 118 balls at the North Marine Road venue where he played his league cricket growing up. Fellow left-hander Bean made 46 but was the first of two wickets to fall – lbw to England Test quick Matthew Potts almost immediately after a 5.30pm resumption.Hail at lunch prevented an afternoon restart, and when umpires Steve O’Shaughnessy and Surendiran Shanmugam attempted to get going again at 2.30pm heavy rain returned as they and the players walked back onto the outfield.Puddles had formed all over the square within 30 minutes, and it took until 5.30pm for conditions to improve enough for nine more overs of play before bad light ended the day just after 6pm.Potts trapped Bean lbw with the seventh ball back – his first after the resumption – and later removed George Hill the same way for seven.Yorkshire have now lost a remarkable 1,308 overs to the weather this season, including the complete washout against Gloucestershire at Bristol in April when not a ball was bowled.Just short of 350 of those have come in the last three games, including at Worcestershire and against Sussex at Headingley earlier this month.New ball seamer Ben Raine will have counted himself unfortunate not to have removed Lyth with either of two confident lbw appeals in the opening over. But, aside from that, the visitors were unable to build pressure before lunch as they failed to hit a consistent line or length, allowing Lyth and Bean to continue their excellent recent form. The pair shared 177 for the first wicket in the draw against Worcestershire at New Road earlier this month, a game in which Bean scored a century.Lyth did likewise in last week’s draw against Sussex at Headingley, when the pair added 94.Yorkshire only batted once in each fixture, something which is not out of the question here unless Durham can continue to bowl with the quality and potency Potts displayed in the evening to oust Bean and then Hill.Lyth was particularly strong on the drive and Bean on the cut, with 17 runs coming from the morning’s penultimate over – bowled by the seam of Netherlands international Bas de Leede.

Potts, Carse fill boots as Durham post mammoth 575

England fast bowler Matthew Potts paraded his batting credentials as Durham piled on the runs in the LV=Insurance County Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby.Potts scored 64 and shared an eighth-wicket stand of 110 from 113 balls with Brydon Carse who made 80 on a day of stoppages at the Incora County Ground. The Division Two leaders secured maximum batting points for the sixth time this season before they were bowled out for 575 with fast bowler Sam Conners claiming 5 for 115. That gave Durham a lead of 132 but Derbyshire responded strongly in their second innings to close on 89 without loss, 43 behind, with Luis Reece 54 not outThe prospects of a positive result on a pitch where more than 800 runs had been scored on the first two days receded further when only 47 balls were bowled in the morning because of rain. There was time for Conners to take his fourth wicket when Migael Pretorious was lbw playing back to a full-length ball but after lunch the game was held up again but this time in bizarre circumstances. A coin or a washer was found embedded in the pitch resulting in a delay of several minutes before the umpires decided it did not pose a problem and both teams agreed the match could continue.Potts and Carse took advantage but only after two excellent catches had stalled Durham’s advance towards a full house of batting points.Ollie Robinson was looking to the cover boundary when he drove Zak Chappell powerfully but Anuj Dal showed why he is rated one of the top fielders on the circuit by taking off to his right and holding a stunning one-handed grab.Graham Clark’s edged drive at Chappell was almost past Harry Came at first slip but he swooped to pull off a superb low catch. At that point, Durham were still 33 short of 450 but Potts continued to exude confidence, putting away the bad balls with crisp drives and cuts.He reached his third first-class fifty by turning Dal off his hip to the fine leg fence for his seventh four and with Carse quickly finding his range, Durham were motoring along at nearly five an over.Carse straight drove Dal for six and he also hit nine fours in a 41-ball fifty that underlined the dominance of bat over ball. The lead was 86 when Potts drove at Reece in the final over before tea and Wayne Madsen pouched his 26th catch in Championship cricket this season. But there was no respite after the interval as Carse and Ben Raine added 43 before Carse was caught behind down the leg side off Reece.Conners quickly cleaned up Matthew Parkinson to claim his fifth wicket and leave Derbyshire with 27 overs to bat until the close.Reece and Came had some anxious moments against Raine and Potts with the new ball but once they settled in, played with increasing assurance on a pitch which shows no sign of deteriorating.Reece came down the track to dispatch Parkinson for six and although Came edged Raine just over the slips, Durham could not break through and with heavy rain forecast for much of day four, a draw looks increasingly likely.

Liverpool ready to pay £60m+ for 18-goal star with same agent as Van Dijk

Liverpool are likely going to be Premier League champions this season and Arne Slot has already commenced building the foundations for exciting reinforcements to arrive at Anfield in the summer.

Liverpool look to maximise appeal in the summer window

Put bluntly, there will never be a better time for players to join Liverpool as they close in their a second title of the Premier League era. Fans had to watch from afar when the Reds claimed the crown in 2020/21, but there will be no such problems come May.

Arne Slot has taken the acclaim of a support that have witnessed their rejuvenated side race into an almost unassailable lead at the summit, though the Dutchman won’t want to stop there as he aims to build a legacy on Merseyside.

Liverpool managerArneSlotbefore the match

Making a start on summer targets, Liverpool are eyeing an ambitious £100 million bid for Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo should Mohamed Salah complete a dramatic departure.

The Egypt international has still yet to pen new terms alongside Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, potentially creating an unwanted scenario where high-profile replacements need to be identified as contingencies should the trio move on.

With Andy Robertson not getting any younger, the Reds have Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez high on their wishlist despite Real Madrid’s reported interest in the Hungary international. Getting one over the Champions League heavyweights would likely send out a signal that Liverpool are serious about being England’s dominant force for time to come.

Maximising appeal has to be the focus for Slot and company. Setting the bar high, the former Feyenoord boss is now ready to pay a premium to land one of Europe’s most exciting forwards once the window opens.

Liverpool ready to pay £60m+ for Atalanta's Ademola Lookman

Per a report in Spain, Liverpool are ready to strike for Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman and have intentions of offering up to €75m (£63.1m) to secure a deal for the flamboyant winger.

Born in London, the 28-year-old represents Nigeria at international level and has registered 18 goals and seven assists in 32 appearances this campaign in all competitions.

Labelled “exceptional” by former Nigeria goalkeeper Idah Peterside, Lookman is believed to hold strained relations with Gian Piero Gasperini due to his recent comments on the former Everton winger’s missed penalty for Atalanta against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

The backlash from his boss has emboldened the player to seek a new challenge this summer, alerting Liverpool alongside divisional rivals Chelsea, who are also willing to commit to a sizeable prospective transfer.

Intriguingly, Lookman and Reds stalwart Van Dijk are both members of the ROOF agency, something that could ease the process of future negotiations.

Fighting off competition for the man in question has to be a priority for Slot. Nevertheless, few would argue they are at a disadvantage given Champions League qualification is guaranteed for 2025/26.

Classy Mooney keeps her cool to hand Australia thrilling win

Dunkley, Jones knocks in vain for England as Australia go 6-0 up in series

An unbeaten half-century by cool-as-you-like opener Beth Mooney saw Australia to victory with one ball to spare in a thrilling first T20I against England in front of a crowd of 19,527 at Edgbaston. The Australians maintained their reputation for withstanding pressure, embodied by Mooney’s 61 not out off 47 balls in the face of wickets to Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone in the last two overs of the match, to go six points up in their multi-format series and leave England needing to win all five remaining matches if they are to wrest back the Ashes. Annabel Sutherland struck two crucial boundaries and Mooney one, with Australia needing 16 runs off the last two overs. Georgia Wareham managed to hit the first ball she faced for the winning run.Related

Ladies who Switch:Annabel Sutherland interview

A half-century from Sophia Dunkley and Amy Jones’ quickfire 40 gave England something to defend and they almost pulled off a coup, as Ecclestone, Bell and Sarah Glenn picked up two wickets each. Despite Dunkley’s fifty and an assertive 29 off 22 balls by Heather Knight – the pair putting on a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket – England were in a hole with the bat. Their 36 for 2 after six overs was their lowest T20I powerplay in 12 innings and no other batter reached double figures, after Jones.Jones lifts EnglandDunkley started at a strong tempo, scoring seven of the eight runs which came off the first over of the match, bowled by Megan Schutt – who was back in action after being overlooked for the Test, which Australia won to take a four-point lead into this match. The Australians were left confounded when Danni Wyatt drove at Darcie Brown and missed, the ball hitting off stump which visibly wobbled but the bails didn’t dislodge. But there was no more fortune for Wyatt when she attempted to loft Schutt over extra cover and missed again as the ball gripped off the surface, pinging off stump out of the ground. Alice Capsey and Nat Sciver-Brunt fell cheaply, Capsey when her bat bounced up off the pitch when she tried to return to her crease as Brown gathered off her own bowling and threw down the stumps at the striker’s end.Dunkley brought up her fifty off 42 balls but then Tahlia McGrath broke through in her first over with a slower, fuller ball which Knight sent straight to long-on and Jones entered the fray, and rode her luck. On 3, she struck the ball just short of backward point and set off, bowler Jess Jonassen failing to take the throw cleanly for what would have been a run out. Three balls later, Jones overturned an lbw decision when replays showed she had got bat on ball. Jones also survived on 15 when she was dropped by Wareham, running in from deep midwicket. But Jones’ ball-striking was decisive and she capitalised on those errors, lofting Schutt over Wareham’s head for six straight after her let-off, then whacking four off the last ball over the covers to take 18 from the over. Jones sealed her 40 off just 21 balls when she heaved Ashleigh Gardner over deep midwicket for six off the last ball of the innings.Amy Jones’ quickfire 40 lifted England at the death•Getty Images

Two in two times three feat. Schutt, Jonassen and GlennSchutt returned to the attack and made a breakthrough for Australia, removing Dunkley who was trying to swing big to the leg side and sent a leading edge to Brown at short third. Schutt was then on a hat-trick, having had Sciver-Brunt caught by Wareham running in from deep midwicket on the last ball of her previous spell. But Danielle Gibson, on her international debut, managed to play the ball late to the off side safely.Jonassen also claimed two wickets in two balls after Gibson edged to McGrath at extra cover to fall for just 1 and Alyssa Healy caught Ecclestone down the leg side, Jonassen ultimately finishing with 3 for 25 to be the pick of Australia’s bowlers.Later, legspinner Glenn gave England a sniff late in Australia’s innings when she had Gardner caught behind by Jones and then bowled the big-hitting Grace Harris for a first-ball duck with a slower one that turned into the batter who edged onto her stumps.Mooney sees through dramatic chaseSilence descended on the crowd as Glenn sat under a steepling catch to remove Healy for 5 off seamer Bell and they erupted as she held it at backward point. Jones kept herself in the action with the stumping of McGrath, who had been accumulating nicely at 40 off 28 balls, off Ecclestone. In the 13th over, Australia were level with where England had been and needed to score at more than eight runs an over.Gardner skied the ball so high back above bowler Bell’s head she struggled to pick it out on descent and didn’t end up getting close. Next ball, Mooney managed to turn a full ball off her pads past short fine leg to bring up her fifty. But then Glenn removed Gardner and Harris and all of a sudden Australia were under pressure, even more so when Bell rattled Ellyse Perry’s off stump.Sutherland sent Bell to the square-leg boundary to ease the tension and Mooney then hit Bell’s last delivery up and over the covers to the rope, leaving Australia with just five to get off the last over. Sutherland drove Ecclestone’s first ball straight down the ground for four but then skied to Jones with two balls remaining. Wareham, however, stayed calm as she punched towards cover and set off for the run Australia needed.
