NWSL Power Rankings: Trinity Rodman makes game-winning return for the Washington Spirit while the Kansas City Current add Ally Sentnor – as rich get richer

Who's hot, who's not? INDIVISA ranks all 14 teams across the National Women's Soccer League

The NWSL returned after the month-long international break and the action did not disappoint. From Jess Fishlock's powerful strike to give Seattle Reign their first win in the second half of the season, to Trinity Rodman's grand return, it was a weekend to remember.

Going into the final few months of the season, teams such as the Utah Royals and Chicago Stars are tasked with climbing their way back up the standings. On the other hand, for the Kansas City Current, it's a case of the rich getting richer – they keep getting better, and added U.S. Soccer's Young Female Player of the Year, Ally Sentnor to an already potent lineup.

So, who's leading the pack, and who's falling short of expectations? INDIVISA presents the latest 2025 NWSL Power Rankings.

    Utah Royals

    Prior Ranking: 14

    Result: Drew Orlando Pride 1-1

Ramifications: Utah sent Ally Sentnor to Kansas City Current in a blockbuster trade that flipped the NWSL upside down over the weekend, but against the Pride, Utah hung on, even without Sentnor. The Royals picked up one point against the Pride for their third draw of the season. The Royals still sit in last place in the league standings with just one win.

    Chicago Stars

    Prior Ranking: 13

    Result: Drew Gotham FC 1-1

Ramifications: Without Ally Schlegel's second-half equalizer, it wasn't looking good for Chicago against Gotham. Chicago were lucky that Gotham were without Esther Gonzalez, so they didn't have to deal with her attacking presence. However the Stars still struggled to pick up three points.

    Houston Dash

    Prior Ranking: 12

    Result: Drew Bay FC 2-2

Ramifications: The Houston Dash played Bay FC to a 2-2 result, and Jane Campbell had a strong performance in net, making five saves. The Dash are far from a spot in playoffs, and will need to pick up  points in the upcoming games to secure a playoff spot.

Vasco se empenha para fortalecer seu poderio ofensivo nesta temporada

A reformulação doVascoapós o acesso à elite exigirá atenção redobrada no setor ofensivo.

Shahbaz and Abhishek spin Sunrisers Hyderabad into IPL final

“There’s nothing more satisfying than hearing a big crowd go silent.” Pat Cummins, November 18, 2023. The next day he took Virat Kohli’s wicket and made a ground with 100,000 people feel like a ghost town.”We have earned the right to have one of those days and still win tournaments.” Pat Cummins, May 21, 2024. It’s taken a little while longer for him to walk the talk but boy when he says something we best listen. Sunrisers Hyderabad marched into the final of IPL 2024 and this time they did it with their bowling. It looked like Rajasthan Royals had won a crucial toss and they did the right thing by opting to chase. One square boundary was significantly shorter than the other (61m vs 72m) and asymmetry like that makes it really hard to defend totals, especially if the dew came in, but it didn’t. All of a sudden SRH had a dry ball and a dry pitch. And they worked a miracle on that.

SRH stun RR with spin

Shahbaz Ahmed originally came into this game to try and shore up a stop-start batting innings. It was the second time in two playoff games that SRH had to pull the Impact Player trigger early. He made 17 in a partnership of 43 with Heinrich Klaasen to push the total up to 175. But that total looked light when Yashasvi Jaiswal raced to 41 off 19 balls. The game was slipping away. Except it had also shown SRH a way to claw back. Jaydev Unadkat’s first over – the seventh – showed signs of how much the ball was gripping. SRH had no specialist spinner in their line-up but in conditions like these you don’t need specialists. You just need people that can turn the ball and hold a line. Shahbaz did that and more, winning a match-up he was second-favourite in. Bowling into the left-hander’s hitting arc, he handed Jaiswal his first dismissal to spin since IPL 2022.

Hetmyer fined for Code of Conduct breach

Shimron Hetmyer has been fined 10% of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the Qualifier 2. He committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the match referee’s sanction.

Cummins brought Abhishek Sharma, who had bowled only three overs this campaign, from the other end. He even called Aiden Markram to roll his arm over. The pitch was now taking handsome amounts of turn and Cummins used any means in his armoury to exploit it. SRH produced a 33-ball period without a single boundary using bowlers whom they haven’t really had to turn to but were there now at this crucial time. This 33-ball period also included four wickets. Shahbaz who hadn’t picked up a wicket since April 5 turned up with 4-0-23-3 tonight. Abhishek, who had bowled his full quota of overs only twice before Friday, finished with 4-0-24-2.

Klaasen gamechanger

SRH have one of the world’s best batters as a finisher and that played a big part in their win. Heinrich Klaasen does not need any protection. He does not need his entry point to be delayed because he has the ability to move through the gears. He can resurrect a failing innings with risk-free shots and still find ways to hit boundaries when he needs to. He was 21 off 20 balls in the 13th over. SRH were 108 for 4 at that point. Batting in Chennai is tricky because of the slowness of the pitches here. Mis-hits can still go for four in the powerplay when there are only two fielders outside the circle but that luck runs out once the field restrictions are lifted. Klaasen understood this nuance and waited for his moments; his match-ups. He has an excellent one against Yuzvendra Chahal and that’s whom he targeted, hitting two mighty sixes, including one to the long boundary. The back-foot drive over extra cover was breathtaking.Heinrich Klaasen brought out his vertical-bat pull against spin•BCCI

Royal pains

Looking back now, all the good work RR did feels bittersweet. Trent Boult gave them a first-over wicket for the seventh time this season breaking a partnership that has rewritten history. Abhishek and Travis Head have been scoring their runs at 13.64 an over, the best in IPL history (min 300 runs scored).Sandeep Sharma bowled 18 slower balls in his spell for just 17 runs and picked up the wicket of Head. His yorker, where he changed his action to be extra slingy, slipped underneath Klaasen in prime hitting form and knocked out his stumps. RR gave away only 12 runs in the last two overs with Avesh Khan executing his yorkers near perfectly. He dismissed Nitish Kumar Reddy, who actually had a decent plan against those yorkers – the reverse scoop because there was no one on the deep-third boundary – by refusing to give him a ball to get underneath. It was high quality planning and execution.

Royals’ batting gets stuck again

RR’s strength in their bowling comes at a price. The batting depth. And they felt it all the more acutely because Jos Buttler has left to link up with the England squad to prepare for the T20 World Cup and Shimron Hetmyer has been carrying an injury. They tried covering up for it by sending R Ashwin at No. 6 but it didn’t work.Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who was brought in to open the batting in place of Buttler, looked out of his depth, scoring 6 off 13 before being dismissed for 10 off 16. Sanju Samson made a mistake under pressure, looking to access the long boundary and getting caught for 10 off 11. Riyan Parag was facing 3.3 degrees of turn on average and he too made the wrong call, looking to hit across the line and getting caught off the top edge for 6 off 10. Dhruv Jurel fought hard for a while, scoring 56 off 35 balls, but the balance of power never really looked like it was shifting.SRH have produced some scintillating performances in this IPL but this – winning with their weaker suit – was special. They’re going to be a serious threat to Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

Notts hit back with new ball after Jennings leads way for Lancashire

New Zealand overseas signing Tom Bruce notches first Championship fifty

ECB Reporters Network10-May-2024Dillon Pennington was Nottinghamshire’s outstanding performer as Lancashire were denied the prosperity they had been hoping for when they opted to bat on day one of their Vitality County Championship match at Trent Bridge.Skipper Keaton Jennings made 91 and overseas batter Tom Bruce 73 but Lancashire let a good position slip, tumbling from 190 for 2 to close on 306 for 8.Pennington inflicted heavy damage by taking 3 for 15 in an excellent five-over spell with the second new ball before seamer Dane Paterson dealt Lancashire a further blow by removing Bruce in the day’s penultimate over. With Australian spinner Nathan Lyon rested for this round, Lancashire have named England pace bowler Saqib Mahmood in their line-up for the first time in 12 months following a stress fracture. It had looked like evolving as Lancashire’s day until the last half-hour of the middle session, when Jennings and George Balderson, who had shared a third-wicket stand worth 107, were both out in quick succession. The morning session had been theirs until Josh Bohannon’s dismissal by Lyndon James from what would have been the penultimate ball before lunch. Bohannon had picked up four boundaries against the Nottinghamshire allrounder, albeit one off an edge, but was struck on the front pad as he looked for a fifth through the on side and was clearly out.Despite pace bowlers Pennington and the fit-again Olly Stone subjecting Lancashire’s openers to a testing opening passage on a used pitch with a decent covering of grass, Nottinghamshire’s only breakthrough prior to that had come in the 10th over, when Paterson found the edge to have Luke Wells caught at second slip.Encouraged by James’ breakthrough, which had ended what had been a threatening partnership between the aggressive Bohannon and a more measured Jennings, Nottinghamshire emerged from lunch with renewed energy. Yet it was Lancashire’s third-wicket pair who dominated for the next couple of hours.Jennings, having built a painstaking 128-ball half-century, which he completed with his 10th boundary, upped the tempo. A paddle sweep for four and a nicely driven straight six off Calvin Harrison’s legspin signalled growing assuredness and he looked well set for a second hundred of the season. But Nottinghamshire’s bowlers never let their effort levels dip and fought back in the half-hour before tea.Jennings will take the blame for his own demise, going for a reverse sweep against Harrison but able only to top-edge it to slip where Tom Moores – back in the Nottinghamshire side for the first time this season but unable to prise the wicketkeeper’s gloves from Joe Clarke – took an easy catch. But the departure of Balderson was purely down to the skill of the bowler, Stone’s impressive contribution deservedly rewarded when the batter was beaten for pace as he tried to flick across the line, squarely in front as the ball collided with the front pad. The two wickets transformed 190 for 2 into 196 for 4.Lancashire’s double setback meant two new batters at the crease, but with Bruce taking the lead, reaching a half-century off 69 balls, it took the second new ball for Nottinghamshire to restore a measure of parity on the day, Pennington striking twice in the space of nine deliveries as George Bell edged to first slip and Matthew Hurst to third. The ex-Worcestershire quick picked up his third scalp when England spinner Tom Hartley found the safe hands of Harrison at second slip, after which Bruce reined himself in noticeably. Lancashire picked up a second batting point but the loss of Bruce, leg before to Paterson, was another big blow. Before play began, players and spectators observed a minute’s silence in respect for Josh Baker, the Worcestershire spin bowler who died last week at the age of just 20. Baker represented his county against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge only last month. It was a particularly poignant moment for Pennington and Jack Haynes, who now wear Nottinghamshire colours but shared the New Road dressing room with Baker before switching counties at the end of last season.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arch-rivals Spurs and Arsenal are battling in the transfer market to secure the signing of Palace talisman Eze this summer. The Gunners have been interested in the attacking midfielder throughout the summer, but they prioritised deals for the likes of Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga to enhance Mikel Arteta's squad. But as the transfer deadline is now fast approaching, the North London clubs could try one last time to further bolster their respective squads with the addition of the England international.

Amid speculations over Eze's future at Selhurst Park, David Ornstein has provided an update on the current situation, as the journalist believes neither of the Premier League clubs are in a position to match Eze's release of £68m. Ornstein added that had Gunners wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri left the club this summer, they would have thought of chasing Eze, however, with Nwaneri penning a new long-term contract, that chance has gone out of the window.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Arsenal have great admiration for England star Eze, but they are currently evaluating the financial aspect of the deal, along with the player's age and his position on the pitch.

Kirstie Gordon five-for keeps flawless record for The Blaze

Sarah Bryce completes four stumpings in seven-wicket win over Thunder

ECB Reporters Network02-Jun-2024Kirstie Gordon took 5 for 12 and Sarah Bryce completed four stumpings as The Blaze maintained their 100% record in the Charlotte Edwards Cup with a seven-wicket victory over Thunder at Emirates Old Trafford.Slow left-armer Gordon’s fine bowling and Bryce’s sharp work behind the stumps restricted Thunder to 111 for 9 on a pitch that was being used for its fourth T20 match in as many days and this total proved to be no sort of target for a Blaze team featuring the England opener, Tammy Beaumont.Beaumont made 34 not out and overshadowed her England colleagues Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone as Blaze strolled home with 4.2 overs to spare.Thunder won the toss but The Blaze grabbed the initiative in the opening overs, restricting their hosts to 22 runs in the powerplay overs and taking two vital wickets.Fi Morris, the hero of Thunder’s victory over Sparks on Thursday, was caught by Teresa Graves at backward point for 1 off the seventh ball of the match and Seren Smale was smartly stumped by Bryce off her sister, Kathryn, for a 13-ball 2.Emma Lamb hit two fours but in the eighth over, she was caught at deep mid-on by Marie Kelly off Gordon for 20 and it was only taking ten runs off the tenth over that enabled Thunder to reach the midpoint of their innings on 44 for 3.Eventually, Ellie Threlkeld and Danni Collins maintained some much needed acceleration until their 43-run stand was ended by Lucy Higham in the 14th over when she had Threlkeld caught at mid-off by Gordon for 20.New batter Ailsa Lister lasted only half a dozen deliveries before she holed out to Kelly off Higham for 4 and the off-spinner took her third wicket when Collins was stumped by Sarah Bryce for a gutsy 30 when attempting a reverse sweep.Kathryn Bryce bowled the 19th over and it was the most productive of the innings as far as Thunder were concerned, 17 runs coming off it, thanks in part to a four and six by Ecclestone. The England slow left-armer put on 26 in 14 balls with Cross before Cross became Sarah Bryce’s third stumping and Gordon completed a memorable afternoon by bowling Ecclestone for 20 and having Phoebe Graham stumped first ball.By contrast with their hosts, The Blaze openers, Beaumont and Teresa Graves, encountered few problems getting the scoreboard moving and the pair had put on 50 in 6.2 overs before Graves skied Sophie Morris to Tara Norris at mid-off and departed having made 29 off 24 balls.Kathryn Bryce then added a further 36 in five overs with Beaumont and the No.3’s departure, caught at midwicket by Norris off Fi Morris for 21 did nothing to halt The Blaze’s stroll to victory. Sarah Bryce was caught at cover off Cross in what proved to be the final over of the game.
