Sanju Samson century, spinners hand India big win in T20I series opener

Chakravarthy, Bishnoi claim three wickets apiece to secure 61-run win

Samson and spinners see India dominate in Durban

Sanju Samson struck his second successive T20I century and shattered records and South African hopes at Kingsmead. His was the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian against South Africa and will be remembered as one of the most destructive. For India, runs came mostly in boundaries: 17 fours and 13 sixes, including seven fours and 10 sixes for Samson. Overall, 88 of his 107 runs were scored in boundaries and he was particularly brutal square of the wicket. He scored 69 runs from 19 balls in the region between point and cover and square leg and mid-wicket, and only 13 runs behind square. Samson took on the spinners with gusto and scored 58 runs off the 27 balls he faced from Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj and Nqaba Peter combined. He also shared in two explosive stands: 66 runs off 37 balls with his captain Suryakumar Yadav and 77 runs off 34 balls with Tilak Varma. That meant India’s innings had middle-order momentum that South Africa could not match. They may have thought they gave themselves a chance when they pulled India back at the end. South Africa were staring at conceding the highest total at Kingsmead and highest against India but after Samson’s dismissal in the 17th over, India scored 28 runs off 20 balls and lost four wickets. They still ended up with their fourth-highest total against South Africa, and it proved way too much.South Africa were never in the chase as only three batters scored more than 20 and there was only one partnership of more than 30. The two legspiners Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi took three wickets each and conceded 53 runs in their eight overs after Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan made the initial breakthroughs which all pointed to a more experienced Indian bowling line-up.Gerald Coetzee’s comeback It has been 166 days between internationals for Gerald Coetzee but it did not seem like he had been away a day. Given the ball in the fourth over, Coetzee immediately started with a full delivery outside off and found some extra bounce. Abhishek Sharma tried to get under it and clear mid-off but only got the ball over Markram in the ring. He ran backwards and took the catch over his shoulder to bring out an almighty roar from Coetzee, who has recovered from a hip injury and had come back from a 12-week conditioning block. The rest of the over did not go quite as well. India’s captain Suryakumar hit Coetzee over his head for four and then over fine leg for six to take 10 runs off his opening over. Coetzee closed out the Powerplay which India finished on 56 for 1. Coetzee also made an in-match comeback when he was called on to bowl at the death and had Hardik Pandya caught at deep point for just 2 and Rinku Singh caught behind with his penultimate ball.Varun Chakravarthy finished with 3 for 25•Gallo Images/Getty Images

Kruger’s timeless over which ended with a wicket Patrick Kruger started off with what seemed like a good plan to keep India quiet – a slower ball that Suryakumar had to dig out but Samson was in no mood to be stopped by that. The next ball was also slower and hit over long-off. Kruger put in extra effort in response and overstepped. Then sent down a full toss. Then a wide, a no-ball and another wide and he still had three balls left to bowl. He got it right with a full delivery outside off, then pulled his length back and could not resist going back to pace off to end the over. His 11th ball was a knuckle ball which Suryakumar dragged to deep square leg where debutant Andile Simelane was stationed. He put the nerves aside to make his first contribution to the game, and not a moment too soon. Simelane was brought on as South Africa’s seventh bowler, in the 10th over.Tilak too good to be left out Tilak hit the second ball he faced with the wind over deep backward square for six as he joined in on the boundary hitting action. He sent the first ball of Peter’s second over between deep mid-wicket and deep backward square for four and then tore Kruger’s tactic to avoid the shorter leg-side boundary to shreds. He hit over backward point and slog swept over fine leg. His innings was cut short when he hit Maharaj to the deep backward square boundary where Marco Jansen took a good catch but his cameo gave India’s innings middle-order momentum.Markram’s lean run continues, as does South Africa’sIt has been 25 innings and two years since Markram scored a T20I half-century and the run continued with a seventh single-figure score in this match. Markram looked especially out of sorts when he tried to play Arshdeep through mid-wicket but closed the face of the bat too early and got a faint edge to Samson to fall in the first over. That set the tone for an innings in which South Africa were never really able to get going. Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton were both dismissed in the Powerplay, which South Africa ended on 49 for 3. The combination of Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller put on 42 in 6,1 overs but when they were separated, South Africa crumbled. They were bowled out inside 18 overs and were bowled out for their fourth-lowest score against India to lose the series opener by 61 runs.Varun removes South Africa’s best Chakravarthy took out South Africa’s two middle-order players and he got them in the space of three balls. In his final over, Klaasen tried to pull a slightly shorter ball but sent it straight to Axar Patel at long-on. And two balls later, Miller hit Chakravarthy to Avesh at square leg and South Africa went from 79 for 3 to 87 for 5 and were looking straight at defeat.

Latham 'lost for words' as New Zealand scale new heights

The new captain lauded his team’s brave approach and how they made the early running in both Tests

Deivarayan Muthu26-Oct-20241:51

How did Santner succeed when Jadeja struggled?

Before 2024, New Zealand visited India 12 times across 69 years from 1955 to play Test cricket, but they had never managed to win a series. On Saturday, in his first stint as full-time New Zealand captain, Tom Latham did an Edmund Hillary, leading New Zealand to their first-ever Test series win in India.Latham was part of the New Zealand team that won the inaugural World Test Championship after beating India in the final in Southampton in 2021. But beating India is a different challenge altogether and arguably the toughest challenge in world cricket right now. Latham was overwhelmed with emotion when he was asked to explain what the triumph in India meant to him, his team, and the New Zealand public.Related

Santner takes 13 to hand India their first home Test series defeat since 2012

Side soreness no barrier for 13-wicket Santner

“I’m sort of lost for words,” Latham said. “It’s obviously an immensely proud moment for this group. I think coming off the back of a Sri Lankan series where we didn’t get the results that we wanted to come here and play the style of cricket that we played. We’re obviously immensely proud to be in the position of winning two Test matches here. A lot of New Zealand teams have come here over the past… I guess to be the first team to win a series over here is immensely special and, yeah, very proud of this group.”So what did Latham’s New Zealand do better than the other New Zealand teams of the past and this current India team?”I think we’ve been on the right side of a couple of tosses,” Latham said. “That obviously played a big part I think, especially in Bangalore. Just as I said, I think we’ve come here, and we’ve wanted to fire a shot. We’ve wanted to be the one that puts India under pressure, what that may look like from a batting point of view or a bowling point of view. I certainly think we’ve done that. I think the way we played in this game with the bat was really important. I think it was a wicket where time wasn’t necessarily an issue, it was runs.”Mitchell Santner was the hero with the ball•AFP/Getty ImagesIt’s incredibly rare for any overseas team to out-bat and out-bowl India in a Test match. This New Zealand team has managed to do that twice in contrasting conditions in Bengaluru and Pune.New Zealand’s bowlers had thrown the first punch in Benglauru in seaming conditions, where they skittled India for 46. New Zealand’s batters then threw the first punch in Pune on a turner, where they countered R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar with a variety of sweeps, including the reverse. Latham was pleased with his players buying into the attack-first approach.”We’ve come here, and we’ve wanted to compete, and we’ve wanted to fire a shot first up,” Latham said. “I certainly think we’ve done that in both games. Obviously with the ball in the first game but also with the bat here. Being able to put first innings runs on the board has been really important. Obviously the bowlers went to work over the last couple of days which has been very pleasing to see.”

Latham hailed Mitchell Santner for wheeling away for 29 overs on the trot in the final innings despite a sore side. The left-arm fingerspinner came away with six wickets during that marathon spell and almost single-handedly spun New Zealand to victory. He finished with match figures of 13 for 157 – the third-best by any visiting bowler in India.”He did a fantastic job,” Latham said of Santner. “I think obviously the wickets that he got… But I think what will go unnoticed is the amount of overs he bowled back-to-back. I think Will [O’Rourke] bowled one over with the new ball from that end and Mitch bowled the rest. Someone like that to come and bowl that amount of overs, to keep in a threat for that amount of time.”I keep trying to take him off, but he keeps taking a wicket. So, I said ‘you can keep going’. Look, I can’t praise him enough in terms of what he’s done this game. He was simply fantastic.”

Rangers and Martin move failed to sign England international on free transfer

Glasgow Rangers and Russell Martin made a move to sign an “immaculate” £2m player for nothing, as per Sky Sports.

Martin delighted with Rangers after 3-0 win vs Viktoria Plzen

The Gers took another step in the right direction towards Champions League qualification on Tuesday evening, beating Viktoria Plzen 3-0 at Ibrox in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie.

Martin, who was left fuming with his Rangers side after a 1-1 Scottish Premiership draw with Motherwell, rung the changes and left out captain James Tavernier and star midfielder Nicolas Raskin.

However, two goals from summer signing Djeidi Gassama and one from Cyriel Dessers puts the Gers in a strong position to progress to the next round. Talking after the Ibrox victory, Martin said via PA:

“I really enjoyed it. I’m proud of the guys. We had a really difficult evening on Saturday, just because there was not enough running in behind, aggression, intensity with the ball. We were not just ranting and raving, we showed a lot of clips and we tried to do a lot of learning in the meeting room and on the pitch in the last couple of days and they took it on brilliantly.

“The guys that came in the team were fantastic. We’re going to need everyone. You don’t get dropped from this team, people come in and out quite a lot because we need to be fresh.”

So far, 10 new additions have been made by Martin and the 49ers Enterprises, with more still potentially on the way before the September 1 deadline.

However, one player Rangers missed out on was Conor Coady, who swapped Leicester City for Wrexham in a £2m transfer.

Rangers moved to sign Coady for £0 – Sky Sports

As per Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Rangers tried to sign Coady on a free transfer from Leicester, with the defender believing that he would be able to walk away from the King Power for nothing.

Instead, Leicester managed to secure a fee for the “immaculate” England international, who signed a two-year deal in Wales.

Emmanuel Fernandez and Nasser Djiga have been the centre-back additions so far, rivalling John Souttar, Clinton Nsiala, Leon King and Ben Davies, but with the latter linked with Birmingham City, another defensive arrival shouldn’t be ruled out.

After Spain had netted their sixth goal, Guler was seen giving Yamal a hefty push. The Barcelona teenager did not appear to take too kindly to the gesture and immediately moved forwards again, only to receive another push from his opponent.

WHAT GULER SAID

Guler had spoken about Yamal before the match and had been full of praise for the Barcelona forward. He told reporters: "I’m not surprised by what Lamine Yamal is doing because he has a lot of talent. He will do everything to make things difficult for us, but we also have a lot of potential and will play with great confidence."

O'Brien 2.0: Everton plot move for "huge talent" alongside Dewsbury-Hall

Everton’s need for reinforcements at right-back has become a top priority for David Moyes as the start of the new Premier League season looms.

Following the departure of Ashley Young, the position remains one of uncertainty.

Nathan Patterson has featured consistently in pre-season but has yet to convince as a long-term solution.

Meanwhile, 36-year-old Seamus Coleman, though an influential presence in the dressing room, is no longer expected to start regularly.

The club had pushed hard to sign Kenny Tete from Fulham, but their advances were rebuffed when the Dutchman signed a new contract at Craven Cottage.

With the window moving into its decisive phase, Everton – who are also pushing ahead with their bid to sign Southampton’s Tyler Dibling – are now casting a wide net.

Among the options is a player whose career arc and profile make him a particularly intriguing fit for Everton’s evolving blueprint.

A versatile operator with Premier League experience, European pedigree, and the kind of adaptability that Moyes has historically favoured.

Everton's search for a right-back

Moves are now being made, amid Moyes’ cry for more additions, with a £35m bid having been lodged for young Dibling, while the Toffees are also closing in on a deal for Chelsea’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. As per Romano, the former Leicester City playmaker is set to sign for a fee of around £25m, plus add-ons.

As for their right-back search, Ainsley Maitland-Niles may not be the headline-grabbing name Everton fans were expecting this summer, but he could prove to be one of the most effective.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The 27-year-old former Arsenal man is currently with Lyon, where he quietly enjoyed a strong 2024/25 season.

He featured 32 times in Ligue 1, scoring once and registering four assists, while also appearing 11 times in the Europa League and contributing a further three assists.

ainsley-maitland-niles-arsenal-transfer-southampton-loan

Now, with several Premier League and European clubs interested, TEAMtalk revealed that Everton are among those assessing his potential return to England.

Maitland-Niles’ ability to play at right-back, central midfield and right midfield makes him a valuable asset in any squad.

Mikel Arteta once described him as having “a huge talent” due to such versatility, a quality Everton currently lack in key areas.

From a financial perspective, the deal makes sense. Maitland-Niles’ market value sits at around €12m (£10m), a relatively modest figure in today’s market.

At a time when the Toffees are navigating tricky financial waters, the prospect of bringing in a seasoned, multifunctional player without breaking the bank would be a significant win.

Perhaps most compelling, though, is how Maitland-Niles mirrors the path of one of Everton’s success stories from recent windows: Jake O’Brien.

Why Maitland-Niles could be the next Jake O’Brien

O’Brien’s rise at Everton is a blueprint worth examining.

Signed from Lyon in a £16.4m deal last year, Everton’s most expensive signing of the summer, the Irishman struggled initially.

Jake O'Brien

He failed to start a single game under Sean Dyche, and many feared he was another big-money misstep. But under David Moyes, O’Brien has flourished.

Now a regular in the back line, the 24-year-old has shown composure, athleticism, and maturity well beyond his years.

He even chipped in with two Premier League goals last season.

Speaking on his difficult start, O’Brien said: “It was disappointing. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but I still trained really hard every day and knew once I got my chance, I’d grab it.”

Maitland-Niles could offer a similar redemption arc. Statistically, he already ticks plenty of boxes.

According to FBref, he ranks in the 93rd percentile for tackles per 90 (3.09) and the 80th percentile for blocks per 90 (1.41), figures that would suit a Moyes team that prioritises defensive grit.

His pass completion rate of 86.3% (86th percentile) and progressive passes per 90 (4.52) (74th percentile) indicate composure on the ball and the ability to progress play in tight spaces, vital for a full-back expected to contribute both defensively and in buildup phases.

He also averages nearly one successful take-on per 90 (0.95), showing that he can beat a man when required.

Like O’Brien, Maitland-Niles comes with a Ligue 1 education and the hunger to prove himself in the Premier League once more.

His time at Arsenal, where he made 132 appearances over nine years, demonstrates not just pedigree, but also resilience. He knows the demands of top-flight English football and has shown he can compete in a range of roles.

Crucially, Maitland-Niles also aligns well with players Everton admire across Europe.

His statistical profile mirrors that of Rayan Aït-Nouri and Ian Maatsen, players known for their versatility, athleticism, and tidy technical skill.

With Maitland-Niles still just 27, Everton would be investing in a player entering his prime years.

Whether used as cover for Patterson, a starter in his own right, or even in midfield, he brings balance, intelligence, and experience to a side that desperately needs those traits.

Given the club’s well-documented recruitment missteps in years gone by, a move for Maitland-Niles would represent a pragmatic, potentially high-upside piece of business, especially if he can replicate the impact of O’Brien on the pitch.

Portugal player ratings vs Hungary: Joao Cancelo the late hero as Cristiano Ronaldo scores again in rollercoaster World Cup qualifying win

The ex-Manchester City star came up trumps late on, while Portugal's captain and Manchester United's skipper put in contrasting displays in a thriller

Joao Cancelo's cracking late goal secured Portugal a topsy-turvy 3-2 World Cup qualifying win over Hungary on Tuesday as Roberto Maetinez's side to made it two wins from two on their road to 2026 in North America.

Hungary took the lead against the run of play in the 21st minute when Barnabas Varga guided in a terrific header from Adam Nagy's floated cross. Debutant Balazs Toth then made two stunning saves to deny Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Neves, but he was powerless to stop Bernardo Silva lashing the ball past him from eight yards nine minutes before half-time.

Portugal took the lead in rather fortuitous fashion after the break as Loic Nego handled in the box from Ronaldo's shot, and the 40-year-old, who now has three goals in two games in his country's qualifiers, perfectly placed his spot-kick into the corner in the 58th minute.

The home fans went wild six minutes from time when Varga scored another brilliant header past the helpless Diogo Costa, but their joy turned into despair less than two minutes later as Cancelo curled in a clinical strike from 20 yards.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Diogo Costa (6/10):

Hungary scored from their one shot on target in the first half as Varga's inch-perfect header went in off the post. Nothing he could do about Varga's second, either.

    Ruben Dias (7/10):

The centre-back looked very assured at the back as Hungary were mostly restricted to counter-attacks. Popped up with some timely interceptions, too.

    Ruben Neves (7/10):

The Al-Hilal man was a surprise pick at centre-back, given he is a midfielder, but his ball-winning abilities still came in handy.

    Nuno Mendes (7/10):

Played on the left of a back three, so didn't get forward as much as usual. Did still pose a threat going in attack as well as being solid in defence.

    Midfield

    Joao Neves (6/10):

The dinking and darting midfielder tested the keeper on a couple of occasions. Left gaps in midfield on the transition, though.

    Vitinha (6/10):

The Paris Saint-Germain star picked out beautiful pass after beautiful pass but did allow Varga a bit too much room for his wonderful opener. His midfield was a bit too open at times, too.

    Bruno Fernandes (5/10):

A lot of the things he was trying just didn't stick in the first half, especially with misplaced passes. Came off shortly after the hour mark in what was an underwhelming display.

    Joao Cancelo (8/10):

He may not have known too much about it as he stuck out a leg to try and control the loose ball, but the Al-Hilal man's touch set up Silva for Portugal's equaliser. Then scored a centre-forward-like goal to secure all three points.

  • AFP

    Attack

    Bernardo Silva (7/10):

Took his goal in emphatic fashion to level proceedings. Other than that, did a few nice tricks and flicks and retained the ball well.

    Cristiano Ronaldo (7/10):

Was brilliantly denied by Hungary's keeper and strayed offside on quite a few occasions, but won his side a penalty, which he converted with aplomb. A solid if unspectacular outing.

    Pedro Neto (6/10):

Whipped in a number of decent-looking crosses but didn't take on his opponent nearly enough.

    Subs & Manager

    Francisco Trincao (7/10):

Added a bit of spark off the bench, which was needed as Hungary sensed an equaliser in the final quarter of the game.

    Joao Palhinha (6/10):

The Tottenham loanee was brought on to add a bit more control, but it is debatable whether he achieved that.

    Joao Felix (6/10):

Dawdled a bit in possession but nearly scored a goal in the game's dying embers.

    Antonio Silva (N/A):

No real time to have an impact.

    Goncalo Ramos (N/A):

    Came on at the death.

    Roberto Martinez (7/10):

Even though his team went behind, they didn't panic, continued playing the same way, and got themselves out of a hole. His substitutes had a mixed impact, but a win is a win.

He’s an Isak upgrade: Newcastle chasing “one of the best 9s in the world”

Newcastle United remain in a tough situation when it comes to their new striker next season. With Benjamin Sesko seemingly off to Manchester United, according to David Ornstein on Wednesday, the Magpies can rule themselves out of the race for yet another target.

Of course, Alexander Isak is still a Newcastle player. The striker has been embroiled in a transfer saga this summer, and was subject to a bid of £110m from Liverpool earlier in the window. Eddie Howe’s side rejected the offer, although Sky Sports say they are ‘braced for a second offer’ from the Premier League champions.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their first goal

If Liverpool, or indeed another club, sign Isak this summer, it would leave Newcastle in need of a new striker. They have recently been linked with a couple of names.

Newcastle’s alternatives to Isak

A recent report from Give Me Sport has linked the Magpies with two players who they could turn to if Isak is to leave St James Park this summer. One of those is Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, and ‘there is confidence a deal can be done’ for the DR Congo international.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As well as a move for Wissa, the North East side could make a move for Aston Villa and England international striker Ollie Watkins. The Magpies are ‘plotting’ to bring the 29-year-old up North before the transfer window slams shut.

It is believed that Howe views Watkins, who has also played for Brentford, as a ‘perfect partner’ for Wissa, with the English manager looking at deploying two strikers more often.

Aston Villa's OllieWatkinscelebrates

As far as the price for the Torquay-born striker goes, Villa could ask for as much as £60m.

Why Watkins would be a good signing

There is no doubt that Newcastle would be signing a top-class striker if they were to bring Watkins to the club this summer. In fact, football statistician Statman Dave described him as “one of the best 9s in the world”, showing just how high his reputation is.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins celebrates scoring their first goal withLeonBailey

Indeed, the England international has a fantastic record in the Premier League. In five top-flight seasons, totalling 184 appearances, he’s already scored 75 goals and grabbed 36 assists. His best campaign came in the 2023/24 season, where he bagged 19 goals and assisted 15.

However, it is not just for the Villans that Watkins has put in some consistently terrific performances. In an England shirt, the 29-year-old has scored five goals in 18 games, with the most memorable one, of course, coming in the Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands.

Replacing Isak is no easy thing to do, and if the Swedish striker does leave St James’ Park this summer, it will be Watkins’ job to do just that. The Newcastle number 14 was described as the “best striker in the Premier League right now” by Jamie Carragher last season.

He has an impressive record in the competition, with 54 goals and ten assists in just 84 games. Last term, he found the back of the net 23 times, the second consecutive year he has managed to his 20 or more goals in a single season.

However, one of the biggest downsides to Isak is his injury record. He has missed 39 games with six separate injuries during his stint at Newcastle so far. Compare that to Watkins, who has missed three in his entire career, and that is a huge upgrade.

On top of that, their underlying numbers via FBRef are not too dissimilar. For example, Watkins last season averaged 0.39 goals per shot on target and 0.42 goal-creating actions per 90 minutes. Comparatively, Isak averaged 0.46 goals per shot on target and 0.46 goal-creating actions each game.

There is certainly a case to be made that Watkins is an upgrade on Isak. His all-round play is excellent, as shown by the goal-creating action stats. On top of that, he is always available, unlike the Newcastle centre-forward, who has struggled with injuries.

Watkins is a consistent and high-level Premier League number nine who has the potential to maintain the number of goals Isak is involved in. For £60m, this could be a steal if they end up losing Isak.

He's better than Sesko: Newcastle considering offer for £68m "monster"

Newcastle have an intriguing fallback, should they fail to sign Benjamin Sesko.

More important than Mbeumo: Man Utd have tabled bid to sign £40m star

Manchester United have finally landed the signature of Bryan Mbeumo, after a pursuit that felt as though it lasted a lifetime, even having two previous bids rejected.

The Cameroonian joins the Red Devils in a £71m deal which includes add-ons, surpassing the fee paid for Matheus Cunha from Wolves earlier this summer.

Such a deal has made him one of the most expensive transfers in the club’s history, placing huge expectations on his shoulders to be a success at Old Trafford.

However, he does arrive with a decent pedigree after netting 20 Premier League goals last campaign, in what was the best season of his professional career to date.

The fanbase will be hoping he can replicate such form at the Theatre of Dreams next season, but he may be joined by other players to help Ruben Amorim in his quest for success.

The latest on United’s hunt for new additions this summer

Over the last couple of days, United have once again been linked with a move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson in an attempt to strengthen their forward line ahead of 2025/26.

The Senegalese international registered 13 goals across all competitions last season, but would be an extremely expensive addition, with the Blues demanding £80m for his signature.

However, other areas of the pitch are also in need of investment, with Aston Villa shot-stopper Emi Martinez now seen as a viable target, according to the Daily Mail.

They claim that the Red Devils have already had a loan offer for the Argentine rejected after talks at the weekend, and are expected to return with a permanent offer for the 32-year-old.

It also states that the player himself would be keen on a move to Old Trafford, with Unai Emery’s side currently demanding a fee in the region of £40m to sell the former Arsenal star.

Why United’s £40m target would be a better signing than Mbeumo

There’s no denying that Mbeumo is an excellent signing, especially if he can repeat the feats he achieved during his time at Brentford throughout 2024/25.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

However, he’s set to operate in one of the two attacking roles behind the striker, a position that is somewhat unnatural given he featured off the right-hand side for the Bees.

Such a move would also see captain Bruno Fernandes drop into a deeper position, possibly restricting him from replicating his figures from last season, which saw him register 37 goal contributions.

Also, given the addition of Cunha within the attacking department, his signing may not have been needed, with other areas of the pitch desperately lacking quality.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has been prone to mistakes during his time in England, notching seven errors that led to goals throughout 2024/25, costing the side in numerous key moments.

The Cameroonian also remains on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, leaving Altay Bayindir as the most senior option ahead of the start of the new season.

Such scenarios have seen Martinez be linked with a move to join United this summer, providing an upgrade on the options currently at Amorim’s disposal.

The Argentine, who’s been labelled “world-class” by Mauricio Pochettino, managed to make more saves per 90, along with a better save percentage – offering a more commanding presence between the sticks.

He also completed more of the passes he attempted, handing Amorim the option for his side to play out from the back should he desire such a playstyle in 2025/26.

£40m for a player of his calibre would be an excellent price, massively bolstering one area of the pitch that has been an issue over the last few months.

If he can transfer his form across to Manchester with him ahead of next season, it would be a phenomenal signing and one that could prove to be more important than Mbeumo.

The next Ampadu: Leeds accelerating move to sign £100k-p/w "creative force"

It has been a busy summer for Leeds United already, who have put a real focus on improving their squad in defence. Three defensive players have already left, with Junior Firpo’s contract expiring, Maximilian Wober joining Werder Bremen on loan, and Rasmus Kristensen leaving permanently, although he hasn’t played for Leeds for a couple of seasons.

To replace them, centre-back Jaka Bijol, arguably Leeds’ marquee addition this summer, has signed from Udinese. They have also brought in central defender Sebastiaan Bornauw and signed left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson from French side Lille.

However, the Swedish defender is not the only left-back the Whites are seemingly set to sign this summer, with another player in his position lined up.

Leeds’ next defensive signing

There is a clear focus from Daniel Farke’s side on improving defensive fortunes this season, after all three relegated sides conceded at least 80 goals in the 2024/25 campaign. Well, the next defensive player they have lined up will bring bags of Premier League experience.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to a new article from Football Insider, as reported by scout-turned-transfer guru Mick Brown, Leeds are believed to be accelerating a move for Chelsea and England international defender Ben Chilwell this summer.

This will not be an easy deal for Farke’s side to complete, with the Yorkshire outfit set to contest the other two promoted sides, Sunderland and Burnley, with West Ham United also interested.

In the report, insider Mick Brown explains that any deal could ‘depend on how much Chelsea are asking for or what his wage demands are’, with a price yet to be confirmed. As for a wage, Chilwell earns £100k-per-week at Stamford Bridge, and it remains to be seen if Leeds can, or will, match that.

Why Chilwell would be a good signing

Last season was not the easiest ride for Chilwell, who fell out of favour with Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca and ended up going out on loan to Crystal Palace. The campaign ended well for the 28-year-old, though, with his temporary side lifting the FA Cup.

Despite tasting FA Cup success, there was certainly a lack of involvement for Chilwell in South London. He only made one Chelsea appearance and a further nine for Crystal Palace, totalling just 440 minutes, the equivalent of 4.8 full 90-minute games.

Yet, despite a lack of involvement last term, the defender brings bags of experience, having made 177 top-flight appearances and won some huge accolades, including the Champions League.

He is also a “creative force”, as Statman Dave said, with 20 Premier League assists and 13 goals to his name. That included this sublime strike for Leicester City against Watford in 2020.

This is highlighted by the fact that, for a seven-season period between 2017/18 and 2023/24, the England international created double-figure chances per season, as per Sofascore.

His highest was in 2018/19 for the Foxes, when he created 45 chances, and his lowest, 11 in 2021/22, was a campaign where he played just seven games.

Stats from Sofascore

Leeds have a good recent history when it comes to signing players from Chelsea, too. A man who Farke considered his “most important player”, Ethan Ampadu, also swapped West London for West Yorkshire back in 2023 after several loan spells.

Well, the Whites’ boss said it himself, Ampadu is pivotal to this Leeds side and their recent success. Although he has struggled with injuries, the Wales international has notched up 86 appearances in a Leeds shirt, playing as both a number six and a centre-back.

Whilst he doesn’t score many, he’s even managed to bag twice and assist the same number of goals. Having been cast aside back at Stamford Bridge, the 24-year-old has more than found a home for himself at Elland Road. Perhaps Chilwell can do the same?

If the signing of Chilwell is half as successful as that of Ampadu, then surely this is a good addition for the Whites. How they would love him to become their new version of the versatile Welshman, and help the club stay in the Premier League.

If the price and wage request is fair, then this is a deal which will add attacking quality and experience to their side.
