Martin: Took SRH too long to realise their batting approach might not work

“There will definitely be some soul searching because you have to put into the equation what conditions dictate to you,” Aaron says

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-20253:47

Martin: Improved SRH performance came too late

After restricting Delhi Capitals (DC) to 133 for 7, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were in the driver’s seat before rain washed out the game in Hyderabad, thus ending their diminishing hopes of making the playoffs. Even if they win their three remaining matches, SRH can get only to 13 points. Four teams already have 14 or more.”That was an improved performance, but sometimes it’s a little bit too late,” Former New Zealand keeper-batter Katey Martin said on ESPNcricinfo Time Out. “I think it probably took them halfway through the tournament to realise that their approach with the bat might not necessarily have to be similar to what worked last year.”SRH’s ultra-aggressive approach with the bat saw them make it to the finals last year. Before the start of this season, there were talks about whether they could become the first team to breach the 300 mark in the IPL. They started emphatically, posting 286 for 6 against Rajasthan Royals in their opening game, but their approach backfired after that.Related

Rain knocks SRH out and hands DC a reprieve

Vettori: 'Conditions in Hyderabad weren't what we expected this year'

“There will definitely be some soul searching because you have to put into the equation what conditions dictate to you,” Varun Aaron said on the show. “You can’t be like, ‘You know, we’re going to play one style.’ Because if conditions don’t support you, you’re going to be found wanting, which they have been this year.”I think the best template is that of GT or MI. They have the players to combat conditions. They have two or three options in any condition given to them, but Sunrises, if the conditions didn’t favour them, they were always found wanting as a batting unit.”After the DC game, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori said the conditions in Hyderabad this year were not what they had expected, which made things difficult for their batters.”This is like the theme of the IPL – isn’t it? – give us the wicket we want,” Martin said. “But I think you have to be able to adjust the conditions. We have said that all year, all IPL and the best teams have done that. It’s been built around the personnel who can control the middle overs.”[Heinrich] Klaasen has struck and struck alright. Ishan [Kishan] and Abhishek [Sharma] had those big hundreds, but bowlers also work out what they need to do against batters like that. And I think the more exposure they’ve been getting, the more they have an idea of how to bowl to them. And I think being conditions-dependent, they [SRH batters] didn’t make those adjustments as well.”

Worth more than Tounekti: Celtic are brewing the new Reo Hatate at Parkhead

Celtic moved back to the top of the Scottish Premiership table on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock in the first game after the international break.

Goals from Daizen Maeda and Kelechi Iheanacho sealed all three points for the Hoops, who had found themselves drawing 1-1 heading into stoppage time.

Iheanacho, who came off the bench to make his debut for the club, scored from the penalty spot in the 96th minute to secure the victory for Brendan Rodgers.

Despite the fact that Celtic won the match, there were a few worrying performances across the board for Celtic, who have scored one goal from open play in their last three games in all competitions.

Rodgers has plenty of options to choose in most positions, perhaps apart from centre-forward, and players know that they need to step up and deliver consistent displays to keep their spot in the side.

With this in mind, Reo Hatate is one of the players who needs to up his game in the coming weeks to retain his position in the starting line-up moving forward.

Why Reo Hatate needs to improve his performances

The Japan international failed to impress against Kilmarnock after being selected to start alongside Callum McGregor and Benjamin Nygren in the middle of the park.

Hatate is in the team to be a threat at the top end of the pitch by scoring and creating goals, as a dynamic midfielder who is not the type to sit back and defend.

Unfortunately, the 27-year-old star was fairly anonymous at the top end of the pitch throughout his 70 minutes of game time, with no shots on target and no ‘big chances’ created for his team, per Sofascore.

Since his exceptional goal against Aberdeen, shown in the clip above, near the start of August, Hatate has failed to produce a goal or an assist for the Scottish giants in the middle of the park.

His performances across the two legs against Kairat, in which Celtic failed to score a single goal, were particularly disappointing for a player of his quality in midfield.

As you can see in the table above, Hatate did not do enough to help the team offensively or defensively, as he was dominated in duels whilst being incredibly wasteful with the ball at his feet.

It is frustrating to see the Japan international turn in consistently underwhelming performances because he has the quality to do better. Last season, he scored ten goals and created 14 ‘big chances’ for Celtic in 27 starts in the Premiership, per Sofascore.

This shows that he is capable of producing more quality in the final third, which is why Rodgers should expect him to do more if he wants to keep his place in the side.

Thankfully, for Celtic, the Northern Irish head coach has been brewing the club’s next Hatate over the last 13 months or so in the form of Luke McCowan.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

The Scottish midfielder was signed from Dundee for a fee of £1m in the summer of 2024 and he has proven himself to be a useful squad member, whose value has soared during his time at Parkhead.

Celtic are brewing their next Reo Hatate

As aforementioned, Hatate is in the Hoops team to deliver quality in the final third by scoring and assisting goals, which is exactly what McCowan was born to do.

The left-footed midfield star has been a bit-part player for the most part throughout his career in Glasgow to date, but his performances when called upon suggest that Rodgers is brewing a talent who could take Hatate’s place as a regular starter.

Per Transfermarkt, McCowan’s value has soared to £2.2m, more than double what the club paid for him. That is higher than new signing Sebastian Tounekti, who is valued at £1m, despite the Tunisia international’s impressive debut with five completed dribbles against Kilmarnock.

The Scottish midfielder has proven his worth by delivering quality performances on the pitch in the Premiership when called upon by the Scottish giants since the start of last season.

His value soaring above Tounekti’s, who is an exciting new signing for the Hoops this season, is a testament to the quality he has shown for the club to date.

McCowan has already scored one goal in one start in the league so far this term for the Hoops, with his strike against St Mirren on the opening day to claim all three points for the team.

The former Dundee star, who was described as “tenacious” by writer Kai Watson, ended the 2024/25 campaign with eight goals and eight assists in 16 starts in the Premiership for Dundee and Celtic combined.

As you can see in the table above, McCowan racked up 0.92 goals and assists per 90 in the top-flight last season, which shows that he consistently delivered when called upon in the final third.

This suggests that he has the potential to overtake Hatate as the starter in that midfield slot, because the Japanese flop has only scored one goal and failed to provide any assists in six starts in all competitions this season, per Sofascore.

Rodgers may have unearthed Celtic's next Tierney & it's not Saracchi

Celtic may have found their next Kieran Tierney and it is not Marcelo Saracchi.

Therefore, Rodgers may be brewing the successor to Hatate’s place in the XI in McCowan, who could become a regular if the Japan international does not improve his performances.

Howe got it wrong starting Newcastle star who lost the ball 26x vs Arsenal

In a chaotic and eventual showdown at St. James’ Park, Newcastle United looked like they’d done just enough to get the better of Arsenal.

That was until Mikel Arteta’s battling Gunners mounted an extremely late comeback to turn around a contest that was 1-0 in the Magpies’ favour on the 84th minute mark to an incredible 2-1 win courtesy of Mikel Merino being the goalscoring hero once more, before Gabriel then sealed all three points at the death.

Truthfully, Eddie Howe’s hosts were dancing dangerously when it came to holding onto that one-goal upper hand, with lady luck arguably on their side even before Nick Woltemade’s opener when VAR overturned a penalty kick for the away side.

Still, their luck had very much run out come the full-time whistle, with several underperformers letting Howe down on the big occasion to leave the Magpies stuck on a meagre one win in the early Premier League standings.

Newcastle's biggest underperformers vs Arsenal

On another day, the hosts might well have held onto a share of the points, but Nick Pope’s rash kick in a bid to start a counterattack with very few minutes remaining on the clock aided Arsenal’s late comeback, as an eventual corner beat the ex-Burnley keeper.

Of course, without Pope in between the sticks, full stop, Newcastle would have succumbed to a far heavier loss, with the 33-year-old making five saves in total, but he won’t want to watch back his costly goal kick anytime soon.

Away from Pope, Anthony Gordon also struggled after being reinstated into the starting lineup, with the number 10 only managing an unmemorable 30 touches of the ball before being hauled off by Howe.

Joelinton also wasn’t at his dependable best, arguably, with the forceful Brazilian going on to win just three of his 15 duels in the frenetic affair.

But, there was one underperformer – in particular – who stood out like a sore thumb throughout, who will now surely be ditched by Howe for his side’s upcoming Champions League trip to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Howe got it wrong starting 6/10 Newcastle star

While Arsenal didn’t have it all their own way during the tight clash, they did routinely gain a lot of joy down the left-hand side through Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber.

Indeed, the pair managed to successfully register six dribbles between them, with the Dutchman and the Englishman growing in confidence knowing they didn’t have the most formidable foe in front of them in Dan Burn, who was drafted out to the left for this clash, a decision which Howe must now rue.

Before touching on his troubling display up against Saka and Timber, Burn was also uncharacteristically beaten in the air for Gabriel’s 97th-minute winner, with his 6-foot-7 frame not giving him an advantage on this occasion.

Away from the last-gasp winner exposing one of the colossus’ lesser-known weaknesses, Burn also never looked at ease with the ball at his feet, when shoved out to the left flank, with his wayward passing throughout just one element of his out-of-sorts game that must have made Howe regret selecting him in that role.

It was very much an evening all round to forget for the Blyth-born battler, with only 47% of his passes on the St James’ turf reaching their intended target, which led to Burn lackadaisically surrendering possession a whopping 26 times.

To make matters worse, it wasn’t just his aerial clash with the Gunners six that saw him be surprisingly outmuscled, with only eight of his 20 duels being won.

Saka also gained a lot of joy out of Burn when bombing forward, with the former Brighton and Hove Albion defender falling victim to being dribbled past three times in total to really ramp up his horrendous afternoon.

Newcastle World’s Jordan Cronin might well have been feeling generous when gifting Burn a 6/10 rating after the match, but even he would state that the long-standing servant looked “largely out of place” as a left-back option.

Howe will have been given plenty to chew over after his side collapsed to a late defeat, with Burn just one player in isolation who will now be fearful of the chop for the trip to Belgium on Wednesday night.

Newcastle now want to sign £35m Brazilian striker to rival Woltemade and Wissa

The Magpies could make a swoop after struggling to score in the early part of the season.

Major League Soccer to debut immersive Embodied Sound technology at LAFC vs. Austin FC playoff match

MLS, in partnership with EDGE Sound Research, will debut “Embodied Sound” during the Oct. 29 playoff match between LAFC and Austin FC – which also marks Son Heung-min’s first MLS postseason appearance. The technology uses real-time object tracking to isolate the soccer ball as its own audio source, letting viewers hear and feel every touch, pass, and strike with unprecedented clarity.

Getty ImagesRevolutionary ball-tracking audio system

The technology marks the first-ever use of isolated ball audio in a live soccer broadcast, offering audio engineers unprecedented control and clarity. By routing the ball's sound into a dedicated channel, the broadcast mix will deliver more precise and immersive effects, capturing the energy of each kick, post hit, and player reaction without being overwhelmed by ambient stadium noise.

This innovation provides mixers with a clean, controllable "ball channel," enabling them to emphasize key moments in real time without affecting other ambient sounds.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMLS's commitment to technological innovation

EDGE Sound Research, a U.S.-based leader in multimodal audio, has collaborated closely with Major League Soccer over the past year to adapt their Virtual Sound Engine platform specifically for soccer broadcasting. The company's CEO, Valtteri Salomaki, explained that the development process involved optimizing audio-focus tools to leverage tracking data and automatically generate field effects mixes for broadcasts.

“Over the past year, we’ve collaborated closely with Major League Soccer to adapt our Virtual Sound Engine platform supporting the automation and enhancement of broadcasting [for] soccer,”  Salomaki said as per Sportsvideo.org. “Early on, we optimized our audio-focus tools to leverage tracking data and automatically generate the field FX mix for broadcasts.

“As we began working in various stadiums, we quickly realized how the sheer loudness of the crowd can wash out the sounds from the field of play. That challenge led us to build a new machine-learning and DSP infrastructure that allows us to rapidly fine-tune models to specific sports sounds, such as the kick of a ball.”

Evolution of technology

EDGE Sound Research, a member of the MLS Innovation Lab, had previously applied earlier versions of this technology in stadium environments, including the Minnesota Twins' Target Field, where it enhanced the in-venue experience for hearing-challenged fans. The company later tested iterations of the technology at the NBA's Summer League in Las Vegas earlier this year.

The MLS application represents a significant evolution, taking the ball-tracking capability from venue enhancement to broadcast application, with this week marking the first live production where the full Virtual Sound Engine platform will be deployed for MLS.

Best since Rice: West Ham lost "the best academy player in Europe" for £0

When it comes to the best player to have represented West Ham United in the modern era, you really are spoilt for choice.

However, if you then limit that to those who are homegrown and have come up through the academy, it’s hard to ignore one man: Declan Rice.

The England international might have broken some hearts with his move to Arsenal, but it’s impossible to deny the fact that he was a superstar for the Hammers, making 245 appearances, wearing the captain’s armband and most crucially of all, playing a significant role in the club’s Conference League triumph.

The Irons are yet to produce another prospect quite as talented as Rice, and while it will come eventually, they’ve already lost a youngster who’s being touted for big, big things.

West Ham's exciting prospects

While it feels like they are unlikely to be as impactful as Rice was, or the youngster they lost a couple of years ago, West Ham still have several exciting prospects emerging from the academy.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

For example, with how poorly the club’s current crop of strikers are doing, it might not be too long before the London Stadium faithful get to see Josh Landers in action.

The Scottish forward joined the Hammers from Hibernian in February of this year and has been on fire ever since.

In just 12 games for the U18s he has scored nine goals, and since moving up to the U21s, the Innerleithen-born poacher has found the back of the net five times.

Another dangerous gem, but one who spends time at left-back or on the left-hand side of midfield is Emeka Adiele.

The 18-year-old, who, according to one analyst, is blessed with “confidence & tenacity,” has already provided seven goal involvements in just eight appearances for the U21s this season.

Finally, someone who could potentially come is a long-term heir to Bowen on the right, Elisha Sowumni.

The 18-year-old was a force of nature for the youth sides last season, scoring 14 goals and providing two assists in just 25 appearances.

Moreover, while he is considered a right-winger, he has shown an impressive ability to play all over the pitch, which could help him earn some first-team minutes in the coming years.

However, while these three are certainly exciting prospects, they all pale in comparison to someone who left West Ham a couple of years ago.

The incredible prospect West Ham lost for nothing

All teams lose promising prospects; it’s just the way football goes sometimes, but Divine Mukasa does not appear to be any ordinary prospect.

The hugely exciting youngster joined West Ham at just five years old, but in September 2013, he moved to Manchester City for free.

He made his senior debut for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, in a League Cup game against Huddersfield Town, a game in which the teenager registered his first senior goal involvement, an assist for Phil Foden.

However, while it’s certainly an encouraging sign regarding his development to see him already playing in the first team, it’s his unreal form in the junior sides that has turned so many heads, and why he might’ve been the Hammers’ most talented prospect since Rice had he remained in London.

For example, in 41 appearances across various age groups last season, totalling 2807 minutes, the incredible midfielder racked up an outrageous tally of 17 goals and 25 assists.

In other words, the youngster averaged a 1.02 goal involvement per game, or one every 66.83 minutes all season.

Such an out-of-this-world rate of return goes some way in justifying journalist Nassali Sandrah’s claim that the 18-year-old is “the best academy player in Europe.”

As if that weren’t enough, he has also flown through the international youth teams and currently has three caps for England’s U19s.

Ultimately, West Ham have got their fair share of exciting talents in the academy at the moment, but had they kept hold of Mukasa, he would undoubtedly be the jewel in the crown.

Clark, Neesham maintain Durham's hold over Yorkshire

It was Durham’s second Vitality Blast win over Yorkshire in six days

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay20-Jun-2025Durham claimed their second Vitality Blast win over Yorkshire in six days as they strengthened their position inside the North Group’s top four places with a comprehensive victory at the Banks Homes Riverside. With this 63-run success, Durham’s fifth in eight matches, they all but ended Yorkshire’s chances of reaching the quarter-finals. This was their sixth defeat in eight as they failed to chase 194.Durham’s 193 for 4 included a series of dynamic contributions, led by opener Graham Clark’s 53 off 35 balls. New Zealand allrounder Jimmy Neesham also starred with 42 not out off 21 before striking twice with the ball in defence.Yorkshire’s forlorn chase continued through a ground power-cut, and they were bowled out for 130 inside 18 overs. Opener Adam Lyth top-scored with 38.Durham beat Yorkshire at York on Sunday, a game in which England seamer Matthew Potts starred with 5 for 17.Yorkshire started tidily in this return fixture, conceding only seven in the first two overs having elected to bowl. But Durham hit back courtesy of their captain, Alex Lees.He clattered four fours in five balls – strong on the pull – as 17 runs came off Will O’Rourke in the third over, the hosts going on to reach 50 without loss from five overs. Lees edged the same bowler behind in the sixth over, falling for 40 off 24 balls.Every Durham batter aside from Ben McKinney, who made 5 before top-edging behind off Jafer Chohan, got set and contributed.Chief among them were Lees, fellow opener Clark and experienced Neesham, who crashed two sixes in his late assault, including a huge heave over midwicket off fellow Kiwi O’Rourke.Clark started the 13th over by muscling back-to-back sixes down the ground off Chohan’s leg-spin before reaching his fifty off 30 balls later in the over.Having shared 56 with Lees, Clark added a third-wicket 62 with Colin Ackermann, 28, before both holed out to O’Rourke in the 15th over.Neesham then ended with a bang to give Yorkshire a sizeable task in reply. The visitors started well with the bat, captain Dawid Malan hoisting a six over midwicket off Callum Parkinson’s spin as 24 came from the first two overs.Malan, on 21, was bowled by Potts with the score on 42 in the fifth over. The brief power cut didn’t stop play despite no floodlights or scoreboard, and it also seemed as if Yorkshire’s power was cut as the score reached 74 for 3 after 10 overs, with 120 more needed.Jonny Bairstow was bowled for 19 as he tried to attack Nathan Sowter’s leg-spin before Will Luxton dragged left-armer Parkinson to long-on.And when Lyth was run out backing up by Parkinson following a fierce Will Sutherland drive, Yorkshire were 91 for 5 in the 12th over and under severe pressure. It was quickly evident that their task was too tall, and with it surely went their hopes of quarter-final qualification.Sowter struck again to remove Jordan Thompson shortly afterwards before Neesham’s seam – 2 for 23 from three overs – ousted Sutherland and Chohan as the White Rose subsided.

Tottenham player ratings vs Monaco: Guglielmo Vicario silences his critics with superb shot-stopping display to salvage Champions League point for Spurs

Guglielmo Vicario was the Tottenham hero as the Italian goalkeeper produced a heroic individual display to earn his side a 0-0 draw in Monaco on Wednesday. Spurs remain unbeaten in the Champions League and that is largely down to Vicario, who saved four times from Folarin Balogun and produced his best stop of the night to keep out a close-range Jordan Teze header.

Spurs saw the home side take the ascendency from the early stages, as Maghnes Akliouche and Ansu Fati threatened to cause havoc in a couple of early openings. Akliouche was the home side's outstanding player throughout and created countless opportunities.

Vicario would show his worth as the first half progressed, saving from Balogun three times as the goalkeeper came out on top in a tense battle with the former Arsenal striker. Coming out to thwart the United States international in a one-on-one, he then got down sharply to keep out Balogun once again just before half-time.

Other than the occasional spark from Wilson Odobert, Spurs rarely threatened – a theme which only heightened in the second period as Monaco turned the needle with a series of attacking substitutions and Thomas Frank's side struggled to react.

Takumi Minamino was off target three times when he should have scored, while Vicario was at his very best to keep out Teze. There was still time for Tottenham to create one decisive opportunity at the other end, as Pape Matar Sarr squared for fellow substitute Brennan Johnson, but the Welshman did not catch it cleanly, and his shot was blocked.

GOAL rates Tottenham's players from Stade Louis-II…

  • AFP

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Guglielmo Vicario (9/10):

A top performance by the goalkeeper. His three saves from Balogun in the first half prevented the home side being out of sight, while his point-blank reaction stop from Teze preserved a point.

    Pedro Porro (6/10):

Played his part to ensure a point was earned, but had a tough evening as Monaco created chances from all angles.

    Micky van de Ven (7/10):

Captain for the night, Van de Ven made a few crucial interventions to ensure his side left with a point. Came close with a header which flashed over at the other end.

    Kevin Danso (7/10):

Put in a solid display at the back and has proven a worthy understudy for Romero. Vicario will get the headlines, but Spurs' entire defensive unit had a role to play in the shutout.

    Archie Gray (8/10):

Making his first ever Champions League start, but you would never have been able to tell. Incredibly comfortable playing in several different positions, the teenager made several key interceptions and tackles, barely putting a foot wrong for his side.

  • AFP

    Midfield

    Joao Palhinha (7/10):

Did his job effectively and made some great tackles, though it was a tough assignment against the likes of Akliouche, who drifted across the attacking positions for Monaco.

    Rodrigo Bentancur (5/10):

Struggled to exert any control in the middle of the park as Spurs were second-best for long periods. Taken off after an hour to be replaced by Sarr.

    Lucas Bergvall (4/10):

Wasn't his finest showing. The Swede was dispossessed in his own half on a couple of occasions and twice bailed out by his goalkeeper with Balogun looking a certainty to score. Playing in a more attacking midfield area, he contributed little to chance creation at the other end and was withdrawn alongside Bentancur on the hour mark.

  • AFP

    Attack

    Mohammed Kudus (6/10):

The Ghanaian's delivery continues to be impressive from the right, though he made less of a game-changing difference than in other recent fixtures and struggled to get into the match in the second half.

    Richarlison (5/10):

Did not have as much service as he would have liked on his return to the side. One first-half opportunity was comfortably saved.

    Wilson Odobert (7/10):

Showed a sign of things to come as he got in behind and flashed a ball across goal after just 15 seconds. The 20-year-old Frenchman justified his selection and was one of Spurs' biggest outlets, setting up chances for Richarlison and Van de Ven with great pieces of footwork. Faded slightly in the second half and was substituted after picking up a knock.

Was not able to turn the tide in midfield but did his share defensively to keep out the home side, while his ball across led to arguably Spurs' best chance of the game for Johnson.

    Xavi Simons (4/10):

Brought on to make something happen but appeared short on ideas. Content to slow down rare attacks rather than play a killer final ball, while a shooting chance from range flew well over the crossbar.

    Randal Kolo Muani (5/10):

Struggled to get into the game following his introduction, but showed a willingness to run for his side as they held out for a point.

    Brennan Johnson (5/10):

Could have been the hero late on, but it was not to be. Continues to suffer from a lack of minutes in recent weeks.

    Djed Spence (6/10):

Replaced Kudus late on as Spurs looked to shore things up at the back.

    Thomas Frank (6/10):

It was far from a vintage performance by his side, but they came away with a valuable point. Had it not been for Vicario's heroics and some wayward finishing by the hosts, though, Spurs would have had no complaints at returning to London with nothing.
