Manchester City player ratings vs Liverpool: Jeremy Doku shines in dominant win while Erling Haaland and Nico Gonzalez find the net

Jeremy Doku ripped Liverpool to shreds in one of the great individual displays this fixture has seen as Manchester City outclassed their rivals in a dominant 3-0 win. The Belgian winger gave Conor Bradley a living nightmare throughout the time he was on the pitch but no Liverpool player was safe from him and after monstering the Reds he topped his performance off with a fittingly brilliant goal.

Doku's trickery earned City a penalty when he was fouled by Giorgi Mamardashvili although the goalkeeper got his own back by denying Erling Haaland from the spot. Haaland would not be denied though and powered City into the lead with a header. Liverpool thought they had levelled against the run of play when Virgil van Dijk scored a header from a corner but Andy Robertson was interfering with play from an offside position.

It was a warning to City and they responded by doubling their advantage right before half-time with a deflected effort from Nico Gonzalez. Liverpool improved in the second half and gave the hosts a few scares but Doku had the final say, scoring with an incredible curling strike which ended the contest there and then.

GOAL rates Man City's players from the Etihad Stadium…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Some good, some bad. Risked a red card with a headless charge from his area to face down Mohamed Salah and was saved by Dias. He did make a good save from Dominik Szoboszlai's long-range hit and was quick to push a loose ball away from the feet of Van Dijk.

Matheus Nunes (7/10):

One of his best displays in a City shirt and against a top opponent. Provided the perfect cross for Haaland to open the scoring and was comfortable in defence, a key challenge on Andy Robertson among his many contributions.

Ruben Dias (8/10):

A masterful performance from the back. Made countless interventions, from cutting out an inviting pass from Salah, beating Szoboszlai to the ball and above all saving Donnarumma's blushes by tackling Salah.

Josko Gvardiol (5/10):

Made a worrying amount of mistakes in the second half which gave Liverpool encouragement.

Nico O'Reilly (7/10):

Worked his socks off throughout, which was particularly impressive after going down with an apparent injury in the first half. Caused Bradley plenty of bother, making for a fearsome double act down the left flank with Doku.

AdvertisementMidfield

Bernardo Silva (8/10):

Produced a big-game performance, controlling proceedings with his precise passing and vision.

Nico Gonzalez (8/10):

He has been learning the trade of a Man City midfielder in the last year and today he delivered his first-class thesis. Showed brilliant awareness throughout, making numerous key blocks and interceptions while also bolting forward to support the attack. His goal may have been a little lucky but he showed the belief to shoot from range and was rewarded.

Phil Foden (6/10):

Was perhaps a little worn out after his Champions League heroics as he took a beat seat role in creativity although he did chip in with some important defensive work.

Attack

Rayan Cherki (5/10):

A comedown from his excellent display against Bournemouth. Spooned a shot over the bar, had another blocked and overall failed to sparkle, leading to him being withdrawn for Savinho early in the second half.

Erling Haaland (7/10):

Responded perfectly to the setback of having his penalty saved by finding the breakthrough goal, beating Konate in the air with an athletic leap and getting a whole load of power on the cross. Linked the play well by giving his team-mates wall passes from which to launch quick breaks.

Jeremy Doku (10/10):

A truly phenomenal display from start to finish. Began playing all over the attack but was most dangerous down the left. Tore Conor Bradley apart from start to finish, earned the penalty, fuelled countless attacks with his dribbles and then adorned his performance with a magnificent strike.

Subs & Manager

Savinho (5/10):

Should have done more after replacing Cherki in the 52nd minute and his introduction initially led to Liverpool getting a grip on the play.

Omar Marmoush (6/10):

Looked keen to add to the goal rout but still looks a little rusty after his injury lay-off.

Pep Guardiola (9/10):

A near-perfect display from his team on his 1000th game. Got his selection spot on and knew exactly how to cause Liverpool harm. Only made two substitutions as there was very little he needed to change.

‘Growing in confidence’ – USMNT icon Landon Donovan sees evolving identity under Mauricio Pochettino after 2-1 win over Paraguay

Landon Donovan offered a positive assessment of the United States men’s national team following its 2-1 win over Paraguay during the November 2025 friendlies, noting signs that the squad is beginning to form a clearer identity as it continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil. He commended the team’s continued progress under the current coaching staff, led by Mauricio Pochettino.

    Growing cohesion and style

Donovan highlighted how each match has shown increased confidence and tactical clarity, noting that despite frequent lineup rotation, players are embracing clearly defined roles that contribute to a more recognizable on-field identity.

“Another excellent performance by the men’s national team,” Donovan said on social media. “Seems like the team is getting better and better, growing in confidence. The roles are clear, even though the players are changing a decent amount, but the roles are clear, and you’re starting to see a clear identity."

  • Pochettino’s imprint taking shape

Donovan also highlighted how the squad’s mentality has evolved under Pochettino. He noted that with questions of attitude and commitment no longer overshadowing performances, the team is now showcasing a clearer tactical identity that reflects Pochettino’s style.

“Now that the fight piece, the pride to play for your national team is no longer a conversation, you’re actually starting to see this team play in a more distinct way that is very Pochettino,” Donovan explained.

    Donovan praises Reyna’s resurgence

Donovan pointed to Giovanni Reyna’s performance as a major positive, noting the midfielder’s first goal and assist for the national team since March 2024. He said Reyna’s 70-plus minutes – highlighted by sharper decision-making and increased confidence – reflect the level the team needs from him.

“That’s the Gio we need, that’s the Gio we want, and why he is so valuable to this team. So hopefully this is a stepping stone for Gio, hopefully he can do it again on Tuesday," Donovan said.

ICC set to approve continental qualification system for LA Olympics 2028

The six teams each in men’s and women’s categories are set to be decided based on the top-ranked team from each continent

Nagraj Gollapudi31-Jul-2025The ICC is set to approve a continental qualification system to decide the six participating teams in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That means that Full Members such as Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka among others, could miss out on cricket’s much-anticipated return to the Olympics after over a century.ESPNcricinfo understands that the board discussed a proposal at the recent AGM which allows for one team from each continent. Though some details still need to be finalised, in essence, the majority approval for a regional qualification system is in place, with a minority of members expressing dissent.Six teams each in the men’s and women’s categories will contest for Olympic medals between July 14 and 29 in 2028 after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed cricket to be added to the roster for the first time since the Paris 1900 Olympics. While the ICC’s initial thinking was that it would shortlist the top six-ranked teams at a pre-determined cut-off date, several Full Member countries believed such an approach wouldn’t allow for a wider representation of countries from across the globe.Related

Cricket at LA Olympics 2028 to start on July 12

That has now changed to a one-country-per-continent qualification system, which is thought to be more in line with the Olympic participation ethos.Which countries are shortlisted will be based on the rankings on a set date. But if the ICC plan goes through, it could mean the Olympics may not have one of the most widely watched contests in global sport: India vs Pakistan. Based on the current ICC T20 rankings, in both men’s and women’s competitions, India will qualify from Asia, Australia from Oceania, England from Europe, with one between USA or one of the islands from the Caribbean from the Americas, while South Africa qualify from Africa. ESPNcricinfo understands that the ICC is still discussing the participation of USA, who potentially get direct entry as hosts. But questions remain around the make-up of the USA men’s team, the majority of whom are US residents but not naturalised US citizens. The ICC is also concerned that the USA women’s team are not in the top 20-ranked teams at the moment. A final decision is likely to be taken at the ICC’s next quarterly meeting in October. The ECB, along with Cricket Scotland and Cricket Ireland, have formed Great Britain Cricket as an entity, which will help facilitate players from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland to represent Great Britain at the Games. An artist impression of Brisbane Stadium in Victoria Park for Brisbane 2032 Olympics•Queensland GovernmentAs for West Indies, CWI wrote to ICC in May, pitching two ideas that could allow one of the regional countries to represent the Caribbean in the Olympics. One suggestion was an internal qualifying tournament conducted among the Caribbean countries with the winner heading to the Olympics. The other involved conducting a global qualifying pathway that would pit countries in the five ICC development regions alongside regions in the West Indies. For the sixth team, the ICC is considering the option of a global qualifier, the structure for which is still being fine-tuned.Speaking on Thursday to BBC’s , ECB chairman Richard Thompson said that the IOC was keen on having a team from each continent which satisfies the Olympics charter. “The preference from the IOC is to work to the ‘five ring’ principle, which is teams from each of the continents represent their continent,” Thompson said. The ICC is also optimistic about increasing the number of participating teams in the next two Olympics – in 2032 in Brisbane and in 2036, the venue for which is yet to be finalised by IOC. Thompson said that with India expected to bid hard to host the 2036 Summer Games, cricket could receive a massive boost.”The hope is, when we get to Brisbane, we might be up to eight or ten teams, and in 2036, there’s a three-way shoot-out between Qatar, Saudi and India, and clearly the real hope is that India get in it 2036, in which case, cricket will be front and centre. Who knows? It could be ten or 12 teams by that stage.”At this stage, we are there by the invitation of the IOC and on that basis, you abide by their rules, and that is to play the geography of your game as opposed to necessarily the top six playing nations.”

Barely a pause as Hundred gives way to England-South Africa ODIs

Big picture

Have you caught your breath? Had a cuppa? Realised that barely 40 hours have passed since Joe Root was playing in the Hundred final and he will be at it again, this time for England in a 50-over contest against South Africa? It’s still (sort of) summer, England, and even though the rains have started to roll in, this is your swansong.South Africa are back, with far less at stake than was the case three months ago, when they competed in the World Test Championship final. Then, everything was on the line, including their reputation as bottlers. Now, with a mace in the cabinet and a captain who is celebrated as a national hero, there is relief and expectation that the next trophy they lift will be the 2027 ODI World Cup, at home.Of course, the small matter of next year’s T20 World Cup remains and, of course, South Africa will be among the contenders but the longer white-ball format is in focus now, especially after they completed a fifth straight successive series win over Australia. South Africa have travelled 16,500 kilometres from Brisbane to Leeds to continue their process of building their white-ball brand of play under all-format coach Shukri Conrad.Related

Much like his counterpart, Brendon McCullum, Conrad believes in giving his players freedom to play fearlessly and encourages them to be bold in their decision-making. Two sides with that kind of mindset is a recipe for entertainment, so expect the next two weeks could be explosive, especially given the history. The last time these sides met in a bilateral series, South Africa had to pause the inaugural edition of the SA20 and win the contest to secure their spots at the 2023 ODI World Cup. It’s not exactly the same situation for England, but you would argue there are similarities. Next season’s Hundred will be the first played with private investment, and there are whispers of a format change to bring it in line with other T20 leagues, while England currently sit eighth in the ICC’s ODI rankings. The top eight teams (excluding co-hosts South Africa, who are sixth, and Zimbabwe, who are 11th) qualify automatically for the 2027 tournament and England will want to be careful they don’t get too close to the bone as the event draws nearer.Much more immediate is the SA20 auction, which takes place next week. While no one from the England ODI squad is on the list, many South Africans, including opening batter Aiden Markram, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj and seamers Lungi Ngidi, Nandre Burger and Kwena Maphaka, will be hoping to put in performances that can sway franchise owners into giving them a big payday.Harry Brook and Brendon McCullum will oversee the white-ball series against South Africa•PA Photos/Getty Images

In the spotlight

All eyes will be on Jacob Bethell, who will become England’s youngest captain on their T20I tour of Ireland later this month but has had a quiet summer so far. Bethell had a tough time at the Hundred. In eight matches, he only got into double figures three times. But he offers an all-round package: dynamic in the field and effective with the ball. His left-arm spin picked up several key wickets, including Andre Russell’s at a crucial stage in the first T20I against West Indies in June. With leadership around the corner for him, he will want to use this series to show he is ready to take on the challenge of seniority so early in his career.Jacob Bethell will want to use this series to show he is ready for bigger challenges•Gareth Copley/Getty Images

Late last week, South Africa’s batting coach Ashwell Prince called Tony de Zorzi “on the fringes” of the first XI and said de Zorzi would be “a little bit disappointed with himself” for his recent performances. Scores of 38 and 33 in Australia would ordinarily not have been enough to keep de Zorzi in the team but Matthew Breetzke is managing a hamstring concern, which gives him another opportunity. De Zorzi has got starts and usually looks organised in the middle but will want to watch out for how he handles the short ball in particular, as he tries to make a case for a longer run.

Team news

England confirmed a debut for 22-year-old quick Sonny Baker, who will play just his 12th List A match. Baker will partner Jofra Archer, who has been injury-free this summer and played in six out of eight matches in the Hundred. The two seamers are the only changes from the last time England played an ODI, against West Indies in June, and replace Saqib Mahmood and Matthew Potts. The batting line-up is unchanged.England: 1 Jamie Smith, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Joe Root, 4 Harry Brook (capt), 5 Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Jacob Bethell, 7 Will Jacks, 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Sonny Baker.Codi Yusuf has been added to the South Africa squad•PA Photos/Getty Images

Kagiso Rabada has not completely recovered from the ankle inflammation that kept him out of the Australia ODIs and will not be risked at the start of this tour. Codi Yusuf, currently playing for Durham, has been called up but not named for the first match. That leaves it to Ngidi to lead a four-man pace pack that includes Burger, Corbin Bosch and Wiaan Mulder. Captain Temba Bavuma, who is managing his workload after sustaining a hamstring injury at the World Test Championship final in June, will start the series, though he may not play all three games.South Africa: 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Ryan Rickleton (wk), 3 Temba Bavuma (capt), 4 Tony de Zorzi, 5 Tristan Stubbs, 6 Dewald Brevis, 7 Wiaan Mulder, 8 Corbin Bosch, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Nandre Burger, 11 Lungi Ngidi.

Pitch and conditions

Headingley is known as one of the best batting pitches for white-ball cricket in the UK, with an average first-innings score of 274 since 2005 and only one score of under 200 (in a rain-affected match) in that time. Both line-ups boast batters capable of keeping those numbers high. This will be the first ODI played in England under the new regulations, in which the fielding team must choose one ball to use after 34 overs and it will be interesting to see how that affects run-scoring. It’s also worth keeping an eye on the weather, with rain expected from 3pm and again at 9pm.

Stats and trivia

  • Bavuma is 69 runs away from 2000 in ODI cricket. He will be the 22nd South African batter to reach the landmark.
  • The sample size is small but, eight games into his captaincy, Harry Brook currently has the best ODI average by an England captain who led in at least five games: 73.83.
  • Two of the last three bilateral series between these two sides have been drawn, and the third was won by South Africa. The last time England won a bilateral series against South Africa was in 2017.

Quotes

“We’re trying to create an environment where we are working towards something, like Morgs [Eoin Morgan] did when he took over years ago. South Africa will be a new challenge to play against, slightly different to West Indies, and we have got to try and assess situations and execute our skills as well as we can.”
“This series will give us another opportunity to improve on the facets within our game. For the younger guys, it’s giving them more opportunities to see the extent of the role that they can fulfil within the team. Then, just make sure we keep winning as a team and making sure we are where we need to be.”

Shaw happy to 'start from scratch' as he marks Maharashtra debut with century

He spoke about how a trainer and dietician “really changed me physically and mentally” ahead of the new domestic season

Prithvi Shaw is preparing to “start from the scratch again” and revive his career with his new domestic team Maharashtra. He took his first step towards that with an aggressive century on his Maharashtra debut on a Chennai turner, which also offered variable bounce to spinners, against Chhattisgarh in the pre-season Buchi Babu tournament.”I don’t mind starting from scratch again because I’ve seen many ups and downs in my life,” Shaw said after stumps on day two. “And I’ve been up there, I’ve been down there, and I’ve come back up there. So, everything is possible, I feel. I’m kind of a very confident guy, confident in myself and my work ethics. I feel and I hope that this season will go really well for me as well as for my new team.”Shaw had been dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy side last year due to poor fitness and lack of discipline, and had also gone unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. Ahead of the new domestic season, Shaw said that he had worked hard on his fitness, and even had his diet monitored.Related

Shaw joins Maharashtra ahead of 2025-26 domestic season

Shaw set for Maharashtra debut in Buchi Babu Tournament

“I mean, these two-three months [before the season] I had my trainer [working with me],” he said. “He used to come personally to train me. And I’ve got a dietitian as well, and he gives me the meals [plan] and everything – like what a dietitian does. So, all this stuff in three-four months has really changed me physically and mentally as well. And, you know, it can be seen on the field.”After having a good workout in the field on the opening day, when he took three catches, Shaw raced to 111 off 141 balls, including smashing 15 fours and a six, on the second. The other ten Maharashtra batters managed 92 runs on a surface that was misbehaving on Tuesday. Shaw, however, continued to bat with attacking intent.By the time his opening partner Sachin Dhas got off the mark off the 25th ball he faced, Shaw had run away to 30 off 23 deliveries. But once Maharashtra lost four wickets in quick succession, including that of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shaw had to temper his natural instincts before he took the attack to the Chhattisgarh bowlers once again. After moving from 91 to 97 with a down-the-track straight six off legspinner Shubham Agrawal, Shaw brought up his maiden hundred for Maharashtra with a more gentle tap to midwicket. When Shaw advanced at Agrawal once again, the ball turned and shot low, resulting in the batter being stumped.Prithvi Shaw signed for Maharashtra ahead of the 2025-26 domestic season•Maharashtra Cricket Association

“I feel it [my approach] depended on the scoreboard,” Shaw said. “Obviously, we’re four wickets down for 17 [after an opening stand of 71]. We had a good opening partnership, but when wickets were falling, I had to be patient enough to take the game away from them, which I was trying my best [to do]. And the wicket [in Chennai] is obviously good for spinners.”It [the pitch] is turning, bouncing and [there are] a lot of patches on the wicket. So, I tried my best to just be over there and try to [make] some scores. It feels really nice [to score a hundred], especially because I’m playing my first game for Maharashtra. It feels nice; it’s been long, and I haven’t played a three-day or four-day game [recently].”Shaw said that he used to be someone who would think far ahead, but in the lead-up to the new domestic season, he wanted to just focus on the present and not burden himself with too many thoughts.”Before it was for me, like I was trying to think ,” Shaw said. “So, I don’t think it worked for me. What I’m trying to do now is going day-by-day – whatever I have [as] my schedule plan when I’m playing a match or when I’m not playing matches. “So, I’ve got a schedule plan. I’m focusing day-by-day. I don’t want to see what happens after a month or two days. I try to be in the present. I’m that kind of a person right now.”Shaw said switching off from social media, and support from his family and his childhood coach Prashant Shetty have helped him ride the lows and stay balanced.”Just trying to be myself, and not really trying to be on social media or anything – those kind of distractions which I really don’t like because nowadays social media and all those stuff, it’s quite bad, I would say,” he said. “So, I don’t really [want to] be on social media and stuff. It’s kind of peaceful when I’m not using it.”And I think the lesson always is: ‘I’ve never lost’. It’s always about learning for me. And like I said before, I’m confident enough in myself [regarding] who I am. Obviously, my family has been a big support in my tough times, and my coach Prashant Shetty [as well]. So, there’s a lot of support behind me, and I don’t want to make them feel that I’m not trying hard enough.”Shaw suggested that his transition from Mumbai to Maharashtra has been smooth, thanks to his familiarity with players such as captain Ankit Bawne, Gaikwad (who have played with him for India A) and wristspinner Prashant Solanki, who was Shaw’s former team-mate at Mumbai.”Mumbai is not that far away from Maharashtra,” Shaw said. “I mean, half of the team I know. I mean, obviously, I’ve played with Rutu, [and] Ankit; Mukesh [Choudhary] is there. Prashant Solanki and few other players are there. I just got to know a few youngsters. You know, Arshin [Kulkarni], Sachin Dhas and everyone. They have been really nice and welcoming to me.”

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Gives Update on Shohei Ohtani's Pitching Plans in 2025

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani will be cleared to pitch sometime this summer, manager Dave Roberts said at spring training on Wednesday.

And when Ohtani is ready to go on the mound, he will not require a rehab stint to get ready, according to Roberts.

Ohtani will not pitch in Cactus League action this spring, but he will participate as a designated hitter as usual to get warmed up for the upcoming season.

Ohtani is fresh off winning National League MVP and his first World Series title in Los Angeles after batting .310 last season with 54 home runs and 130 RBI. He did not pitch a season ago due to elbow issues stemming from an injury during his time with the Los Angeles Angels.

When Ohtani returns to the mound, he will certainly be a boon to an already-loaded Dodgers rotation. Ohtani has posted a career 3.01 ERA over 481.2 innings in his career, with 608 career strikeouts.

Juan Soto's Radio Silence Toward Former Yankees Teammates Had A Simple Explanation

After officially signing his record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets last week, Juan Soto shockingly revealed that he hadn't spoken to any of his former Yankees since they lost the 2024 World Series in October.

"I haven't talked to any of those guys," the outfielder said at his introductory press conference in New York. "We talked to them through playoffs, end of the playoffs but after that… I haven't talked to any of [them]."

While this was certainly a strange admission considering that a) the Yankees were in the running for Soto up until the very end and b) he had just played the entire 2024 season alongside them—there was actually a simple explanation for his radio silence.

MLB insider Bob Nightengale shared on X this week that, "The reason there was no communication between Juan Soto and his former Yankee teammates simply is that Soto changed his cell phone number. He was bombarded by outside calls during his free agency and wanted privacy."

Nightengale also added that, "Soto now is reaching out to former Yankee teammates."

In the end, the Yankees came up short—offering Soto a 16-year, $760 million contract—one year longer and $5 million shy of what owner Steve Cohen and the Mets ponied up.

The 26-year-old's mega-deal to play baseball in Queens is the largest in American sports history.

James, Tongue push Worcestershire to the brink as Notts scent crucial win

Nottinghamshire advanced to the threshold of a vital Rothesay County Championship victory over Worcestershire on a heavily rain-affected third day at Visit Worcestershire New Road. The visitors’ seam attack excelled for the second time in the match as the home side followed their first innings 182 all out with 160. Lyndon James took five for 35, passing 100 first-class wickets in the process, and Josh Tongue added four for 52 (seven for 111 in the match). That left Nottinghamshire needing just 136 for victory and they reached 40 for one among the showers before yet more rain lopped off the last 21 overs. On a seamer-friendly pitch, the small target is no formality, but Haseeb Hameed’s side should, weather permitting, close out the win on the final day.Nottinghamshire made the prompt start they wanted on the third day as the weather allowed play to begin on time, but they were kept waiting for a breakthrough. Gareth Roderick and Ethan Brookes extended their partnership for another 56 minutes. The sixth-wicket pair added 52 in 26 overs before the impressive James struck with successive balls. Brookes drove a wide delivery straight to cover where substitute fielder Joe Pocklington (on for Mohammad Abbas who had suffered a bask spasm) took a smart catch. Matthew Waite was pinned lbw.Tom Taylor survived the hat-trick ball, but seven overs later endured a candidate for most aggravating minute of the season. A short ball from Dillon Pennington rose only knee high to torpedo the batter lbw. Taylor then watched in angst as rain arrived immediately and everyone else followed him back to the pavilion. To Nottinghamshire’s delight, the rain cleared to allow play after an early lunch and they quickly polished off the innings. Tongue had Ben Allison caught at first slip and James completed his third first class five-for by hitting Khurram Shahzad’s off-stump. Roderick was left unbeaten on 37 from 116 balls. The Durban-born wicketkeeper-batter has had a terrific match with 98 runs for once out in a low-scoring contest and five catches with power to add. When Nottinghamshire launched their pursuit of their small but ticklish, Worcestershire made the perfect start. Taylor bowled Haseeb Hameed for the second time in the match to leave Nottinghamshire’s captain with a pair against the Pears.Rain soon returned and in the fragments of play which followed, Ben Slater and Freddie McCann, the latter playing with considerable panache in the gloom, avoided further mishap to advance their side to within touching distance of a potentially momentous victory.
